Abstract We study experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of spin relaxation motion excited by a femtosecond pulse in the TbCo2/FeCo multilayer structures with different ratios of TbCo2 to FeCo thicknesses rd = dTbCo2 / dFeCo. The main attribute of the structure is in-plane magnetic anisotropy artificially induced during sputtering under DC magnetic field. The optical pump-probe method revealed strongly damped high-frequency oscillations of the dynamical Kerr rotation angle, followed by its slow relaxation to the initial state. Modeling experimental results using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation showed that the observed entire dynamics is due to destruction and restoration of magnetic anisotropy rather than to demagnetization. For the pumping fluence of 7 mJ/cm2, the maximal photo-induced disruption of the anisotropy field is about 14% for the sample with rd = 1 and decreases when rd increases. The anisotropy relaxation is a three-stage process: the ultrafast one occurs within several picoseconds, and the slow one occurs on a nanosecond time scale. The Gilbert damping in the multilayers is found one order of magnitude higher than that in the constituent monolayers.

AbstractThe valley Hall effect (VHE) in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals is a promising approach to study the valley pseudospin. Most experiments so far have used bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) through local photoexcitation. However, the valley depolarization of such excitons is fast, so that several challenges remain to be resolved. We address this issue by exploiting a unipolar VHE using a heterobilayer made of monolayer MoS2/WTe2 to exhibit a long valley-polarized lifetime due to the absence of electron-hole exchange interaction. The unipolar VHE is manifested by reduced photoluminescence at the MoS2 A exciton energy. Furthermore, we provide quantitative information on the time-dependent valley Hall dynamics by performing the spatially-resolved ultrafast Kerr-rotation microscopy; we find that the valley-polarized electrons persist for more than 4 nanoseconds and the valley Hall mobility exceeds 4.49 × 103 cm2/Vs, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous reports.

Abstract The ordinary Hall effect refers to generation of a transverse voltage upon exertion of an electric field in the presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field. While a linear Hall effect is commonly observed in systems with breaking time-reversal symmetry via an applied external magnetic field or their intrinsic magnetization1, 2, a nonlinear Hall effect can generically occur in non-magnetic systems associated with a nonvanishing Berry curvature dipole3. Here we report, observations of a nonlinear optical Hall effect in a Weyl semimetal WTe2 without an applied magnetic field at room temperature. We observe an optical Hall effect resulting in a polarization rotation of the reflected light, referred to as the nonlinear Kerr rotation. The nonlinear Kerr rotation linearly depends on the charge current and optical power, which manifests the fourth-order nonlinearity. We quantitatively determine the fourth-order susceptibility, which exhibits strong anisotropy depending on the directions of the charge current and the light polarization. Employing symmetry analysis of Berry curvature multipoles, we demonstrate that the nonlinear Kerr rotations can arise from the Berry curvature hexapole allowed by the crystalline symmetries of WTe2. There also exist marginal signals that are incompatible with the symmetries, which suggest a hidden phase associated with the nonlinear process.

Design and simulations of an integrated photonic device that can optically detect the magnetization direction of its ultra-thin (∼12 nm) metal cladding, thus ‘reading’ the stored magnetic memory, are presented. The device is an unbalanced Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based on InP Membrane on Silicon (IMOS) platform. The MZI consists of a ferromagnetic thin-film cladding and a delay line in one branch, and a polarization converter in the other. It quantitatively measures the non-reciprocal phase shift caused by the Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect in the guided mode which depends on the memory bit’s magnetization direction. The current design is an analytical tool for research exploration of all-optical magnetic memory reading. It has been shown that the device is able to read a nanoscale memory bit (400 × 50 × 12 nm) by using a Kerr rotation as small as 0.2∘, in the presence of a noise ∼10 dB in terms of signal-to-noise ratio. The device is shown to tolerate performance reductions that can arise during the fabrication.
