The string tension does not have to be put in by hand, it can be dynamically generated, as in the case when we formulate string theory in the modified measure formalism, and other formulations as well. Then string tension appears, but as an additional dynamical degree of freedom. It can be seen however that this string tension is not universal, but rather each string generates its own string tension, which can have a different value for each string. We also define a new Tension scalar background field which change locally the value of the string tension along the world sheets of the strings. When there are many strings with different string tensions this Tension field can be determined from the requirement of world sheet conformal invariance and for two types of string tensions depending on the relative sign of the tensions we obtain nonsingular cosmologies and warp space scenarios and when the two string tensions are positive, we obtain scenarios where the Hagedorn temperature is avoided in the early universe or in regions of warped space time where the string tensions become very big.

Abstract We give a prescription for $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 supersymmetrization of any (four-dimensional) nonlinear electrodynamics theory with a Lagrangian density satisfying a convexity condition that we relate to semi-classical unitarity. We apply it to the one-parameter ModMax extension of Maxwell electrodynamics that preserves both electromagnetic duality and conformal invariance, and its Born-Infeld-like generalization, proving that duality invariance is preserved. We also establish superconformal invariance of the superModMax theory by showing that its coupling to supergravity is super-Weyl invariant. The higher-derivative photino-field interactions that appear in any supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics theory are removed by an invertible nonlinear superfield redefinition.

We study correlation functions in the complex fermion SYK model. We focus, specifically, on the h=2 mode which explicitly breaks conformal invariance and exhibits the chaotic behaviour. We numerically explore a fermion six-point OTOC, with two and three real-time folds, respectively. While our approach is expected to yield an early-time chaotic growth, we nevertheless observe a near-maximal value. Following the program of Gross-Rosenhaus, we estimate the triple short time limit of the six point function. Unlike the conformal modes with high values of h, the h=2 mode has contact interaction dominating over the planar in the large q limit.

In this review, after a general introduction to the effective string theory (EST) description of confinement in pure gauge theories, we discuss the behaviour of EST as the temperature is increased. We show that, as the deconfinement point is approached from below, several universal features of confining gauge theories, like the ratio Tc/σ0, the linear increase of the squared width of the flux tube with the interquark distance, or the temperature dependence of the interquark potential, can be accurately predicted by the effective string. Moreover, in the vicinity of the deconfinement point the EST behaviour turns out to be in good agreement with what was predicted by conformal invariance or by dimensional reduction, thus further supporting the validity of an EST approach to confinement.
