This paper is based on my M.Phil research Project “A Discoursal Approach To Teaching Writing.” Seven essays were analyzed using the discourse analysis approach to identify the discourse pattern, functions and relations. The essays were considered in rhetorical terms and they represented different modes of writing - First person Narrative, public speech, personal, descriptive, Biographical and two Argumentative essays. The discourse organization was studied and found important features, common at three levels. (a) Macro level - Patterns situation - problem - solution - evaluation (b) Micro level - functions Elaboration, Evaluation Inference and summing up (c) Micro level- relations condition – consequence, cause – effect, reason – result, contrast, question – answer and claim – counterclaim.             These findings showed that certain discourse features were used in similar ways by writers to structure and organization texts irrespective of what genre they belong to.   On the basis of the findings, two types of tasks were designed at the above mentioned three levels. Tasks that help the student (a) To identify the discourse features (b) To develop their ability to produce coherent writing involving the use of these features. The trying out of selected tasks showed that the tasks were feasible and helpful. Though some of the students had problems initially in comprehending, they could perform the tasks quite successfully once explanations were given and when content was given than otherwise.

Summary Quantifying gait parameters and ambulatory monitoring of changes in these parameters have become increasingly important in epidemiological and clinical studies. Using high-density accelerometry measurements, we propose adaptive empirical pattern transformation (ADEPT), a fast, scalable, and accurate method for segmentation of individual walking strides. ADEPT computes the covariance between a scaled and translated pattern function and the data, an idea similar to the continuous wavelet transform. The difference is that ADEPT uses a data-based pattern function, allows multiple pattern functions, can use other distances instead of the covariance, and the pattern function is not required to satisfy the wavelet admissibility condition. Compared to many existing approaches, ADEPT is designed to work with data collected at various body locations and is invariant to the direction of accelerometer axes relative to body orientation. The method is applied to and validated on accelerometry data collected during a $450$-m outdoor walk of $32$ study participants wearing accelerometers on the wrist, hip, and both ankles. Additionally, all scripts and data needed to reproduce presented results are included in supplementary material available at Biostatistics online.

Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Given a permutation $\pi$, let $des(\pi)$ denote the descent number of $\pi$ and $maj(\pi)$ denote the major index of $\pi$. Babson and Steingrímsson conjectured that $(des, stat)$ and $(des, maj)$ are equidistributed on $S_n$. Foata and Zeilberger settled this conjecture using q-enumeration, generating functions and Maple packages ROTA and PERCY. Later, Burstein provided a bijective proof of a refinement of this conjecture. In this paper, we give a new bijective proof of this conjecture.

This paper analyzes array pattern tolerance against excitation errors. The nonprobabilistic interval analysis algorithm is used for tolerance analysis of the nonideal uniform linear array in this work. Toward this purpose, corresponding interval models of the power pattern functions are established, respectively, with the consideration of the amplitude errors, phase errors, or both simultaneously, in antenna arrays. The tolerance for the amplitude-phase error of the main function parameters including the beamwidth, sidelobe level, and the directivity is simulated by computer according to the indicators and the actual requirements. Accordingly, the worst admissible performance of an array can be evaluated, which may provide theoretical reference for optimal antenna array design. As for the problem of array synthesis in the presence of various array errors, interval analysis-convex programming (IA-CP) is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed IA-CP based synthesis technique is robust for the amplitude and phase errors.

AbstractThis study aims to identify workload pattern in active smokers both in  light workload, medium and heavy workload with controlled faktor are temperature and light.Response Surface Metodology (RSM) is a collection of statistical and mathematical techniques useful for evaluation of relationship existing between some controlled experiment faktors and measured responses according to one or more selected criteria. Based on the results on light workload optimization functions have saddle pattern functions so it is with medium workload. While the heavy workload optimization functions are obtained based on the minimum surface.

International audience We study permutation patterns from an algebraic combinatorics point of view. Using analogues of the classical shuffle and infiltration products for word, we define two new Hopf algebras of permutations related to the notion of permutation pattern. We show several remarkable properties of permutation patterns functions, as well their occurrence in other domains.
