Applying organic coating is an important and effective approach for the protection of metal from corrosion. Weathering degradation and under-film corrosion are the two major important factors that cause the failure of organic coatings. In this work, the degradation investigation of two epoxy coatings (clear and pigmented coatings) was carried out under the dry–wet circulation of three different water fog solutions (deionized water, 0.5 wt% NaCl, 0.05 wt% NaCl + 0.35 wt% (NH4)2SO4) in 35 days. The apparent performance (pull-off adhesion and surface potentials) and electrochemical features [electrochemical noise and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)] of the coating samples were monitored after dry–wet fog exposure. In our three accelerating systems of the fog atmosphere, the time that the detectable defects appeared on the surface of coating samples was far ahead in the mixed salt solution than that in the deionized water or 0.5 wt% NaCl solution. For a defective or damaged coating surface, the derived results by using the standard deviation method (SDM) or Fourier power spectrum (FPS) were rather higher than those obtained from EIS as a whole, while for the same coating, the degradation trend with time derived from EIS, SDM, FPS, and scanning Kelvin probe was consistent with each other.

In the dissertation compositions of urethane diacrylates and monoacrylates have been studied, which when curing under the conditions of UV-activated copolymerization process meeting the requirements of cosmetic varnishes, form cross-linked structure coatings with high strength-deformation, surface hardness, surface light reflectance, adhesion and other parameters. The review of the literature summarizes information on the types of natural nail coatings and the basic components entering them. Restrictions on the choice of basic components entering the system are described. The effect of conditions and components on the natural nail is described. The materials used in the research are described in the methodological part of the work. The process of obtaining compositions is described. The research methods used are described: characterization of rheological properties of non-polymerized compositions, differential thermal analysis of polymerization process, determination of polymerization depth, determination of crosslinked part of polymerized systems, determination of yield tensile strength-deformation, coating surface hardness, surface gloss and surface wear, assessment of adhesion and its durability, in-vitro and in-vivo coating adhesion studies on natural nails, spectroscopic analysis of pigmented coatings and assessment of color constancy, comparison of coating compositions in terms of their functionality and effects on human health. In the experimental part of the work, methodologies for component selection, composite system formation and obtaining appropriate coatings have been developed. A methodology has been developed for the evaluation of the set of structures and properties of the obtained coatings. The influence of the chemical nature and content ratios of urethane diacrylates and monoacrylates suitable for the formation of separate cosmetic coatings on the indicators of cross-linked structures formed in the process of UV-activated copolymerization and the corresponding indicators of coating properties has been studied. The influence of individual additives on the properties of cross-linked coatings, their adhesion to the surface and the durability of the coating at removal process has been evaluated.

The testing of thin colored coatings based on urethane acrylate composition is a technologically advanced, highly specialized and complex process. For decorative pigmented coatings color stability is crucial quality parameter. The photo chemically curable polymer films were prepared by addition of 3 different radical initiators (KTO, TPO, TPO-L) to aliphatic urethane acrylate composition with various pigments (solid and fluorescent). Coating color change were evaluated in UV chamber (with luminous intensity 130 mw spectrum λmax = 405 nm) after 1 h, 48 h and 72 h. Color measurements were performed according to the CIEL*a*b* color standard to evaluate their stability over time. It was found that pigmented coatings have higher risk of yellowness than clear coatings. Also fluorescent pigments containing red has tendency to yellow after UV light exposure. The influence of the photoinitiator on the color stability were inconsiderable.

Artificial weathering can significantly reduce the testing time needed for proving coating durability, nevertheless its reliability is still not thoroughly proven. In this study, eight different transparent and pigmented coating systems, namely oil, acrylate, alkyd and urethane alkyd were evaluated through natural and artificial weathering tests on oak samples by measuring colour, gloss and surface wettability and by macroscopic and microscopic evaluation. The oil coatings performed well in wood colour stability evaluations, while the best gloss and wettability change results were noted for acrylate coatings. Pigmented coatings were characterized by significantly lower colour changes than transparent ones. The gloss and wettability changes were more sensitive to coating disruption than to total colour changes of coated wood associated with chemical changes in wood. The findings in this work showed that values of gloss changes and surface wettability for all types of coatings exposed to artificial and natural weathering resulted in significant differences from each other. The data obtained by artificial weathering method provide basic results of coatings durability and, ideally, natural weathering should be performed at the same time to support the results from laboratory tests by exposing wood under real conditions.
