West Nile fever is a zoonotic arbovirus mosquito- and tick-borne infection, which occurs in humans in the form of an acute febrile illness with symptoms of general intoxication, in severe cases – with the central nervous system damage. West Nile virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family. After the start of Russians’ mass tourism to tropical and subtropical regions, number of cases of the disease in Russia has increased, especially in the south, where the virus is more viable. The infection mainly affects birds but also people and many mammals (bats, cats, dogs, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, etc.), which become infected after the bite of a mosquito of the genus Culex (Culex pipiens) carrying the disease, ixodid or argas mite. A clinical case of hemorrhagic stroke caused by West Nile fever is presented in the article.

African swine fever (ASF) poses a major threat to swine health and welfare worldwide. After several European countries have reported cases of ASF, Greece confirmed officially the first positive case on 5 February 2020. The owner of a backyard farm in Nikoklia, a village in Serres regional unit, Central Macedonia, reported a loss of appetite, weakness, dyspnea, and the sudden death of 6 domestic pigs. Necropsy was performed in one gilt and findings were compatible with acute to subacute septicemic disease. Predominantly, hyperemic enlargement of spleen and lymph node enlargement and/or hemorrhage were observed. Description of vague clinical signs by the farmer suggested a limited resemblance to ASF-acute infection. However, the disease could not be ruled out once septicemic condition including splenomegaly, was diagnosed macroscopically at necropsy. In addition, considering the farm’s location near to ASF protection zones, a further diagnostic investigation followed. Confirmation of the disease was obtained using a series of diagnostic tests on several tissue samples. Further clinical, molecular, and epidemiologic evaluation of the farm was performed. According to the contingency plan, authorities euthanized all 31 pigs on the farm, whilst blood testing revealed ASF virus infection. Further emergency measures were implemented to contain the spread of the disease.

This study is aimed at building and analysing a SIRS model and also simulating the model to predict the number of dengue fever cases. Methods applied for this model are building the SIRS model by modifying the SIR model, analysing the SIRS model using the Lyapunov function to prove three theorems (the existence, the free disease, and the endemic status of dengue fever), and simulating the SIRS model using the number of dengue case data in South Sulawesi by Maple. The results obtained are the SIRS model of dengue fever transmission, stability analysis, global stability, and the value of the basic reproduction number R 0 . The simulation done for the dengue fever case in South Sulawesi found the basic reproduction number R 0 = 26.47609 > 1 ; it means that South Sulawesi is in the endemic stage of transmission for dengue fever disease. Simulation of the SIRS model for dengue fever can predict the number of dengue cases in South Sulawesi that could be a recommendation for the government in an effort to prevent the number of dengue fever cases.

The spectrum of dengue infection illness ranges from mildly symptomatic disease to severe forms of dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Expanded dengue syndrome refers to unusual complications involving gastrointestinal, hepatic, neurological, pulmonary and renal systems. Subacute thyroiditis represents a very rare and under-recognised complication of dengue. We report a case of a 38-year-old female presenting with recurrent fever and throat pain following an episode of dengue. After detailed clinical examination, biochemical evaluation and imaging studies, a diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis complicating dengue was made. We discuss its clinical course and management in this report. Only four such cases have previously been reported in literature. Subacute thyroiditis may represent another rare facet of dengue expanded syndrome.
