Indonesia is one of the countries that is prone to earthquakes. In addition to the dead loads, superimposed dead loads, and live loads, the design of buildings in Indonesia must be concerned with earthquake loads. Installing shear walls in the building structure as the Special Moment Frame Dual System is one of a solution to withstand earthquake loads. However, the location of shear walls must be considered, especially in buildings with horizontal irregularities. This study aims to determine the optimum location of the shear walls in a 10-storey building that has U-configuration with dynamic earthquake loads. This research is a numerical simulation ran by modelling the structure with software. To know the effect of the shear wall’s location on a building, several variations of the shear wall configuration with different positions have been conducted. It can be seen the lateral displacement of each floor and the shear force are the response structure to withstand the dynamic earthquake loads. Shear walls that are located close to the center of mass of the building are the optimum variation because the position of the shear wall is the closest to the core area of the building, which is the rotational axis of the building.

The intermodular connection between modules plays a vital role in the overall performance of modular structures. The separation between a column and connection is possible due to the absence of links (welding or bolting) since limited space is available between modules. This study proposed a self-locking joint to be used in a modular steel structure, connecting columns with a connection without need of extra space between modules. The behavior of the proposed connection subjected to monotonic load was evaluated using a finite element approach using ABAQUS software. The influencing factors contributed to the behavior of the self-locking connection and columns observed using a parametric study. The parametric study was conducted by varying beam thickness, bolt pretension force and friction coefficient µ. Results indicate that the proposed connection can be classified as a semirigid connection according to Eurocode 3 and special moment frame (SMF) as recommended by AISC.

Apartments are an option for vertical housing. Currently, with the rapid development of technology, a person will tend to choose housing that can support their mobility. So it is planned that an apartment building structure is planned using a Special Moment Frame System using Performance Based Design referring to SNI 1729: 2015 and SNI 1726: 2019. Planned with columns HC 582x500x50x65 and HC 508x462x75x75 as well as WF beams 400x300x12x22 and WF 400x200x12x22. The results show that the columns and beams are strong but wasteful.

Setback irregularities are considered where discontinuity between adjacent stories is excessive. This irregularity caused the probability of high damage at structures subjected to strong earthquake motion. For this purpose, this study was conducted by modeling the steel special moment frame (SMF) structures using a finite element calculation program with nonlinear static analysis compared to Padang city’s response spectrum. The buildings are also modeled with two types of setbacks: single and multiple setbacks. The results of this paper are discussed including the explanation of many parameters that relate to elastic and inelastic seismic responses of steel special moment frame (SMF). Based on the results, the setback irregularities, both single and multiple setbacks, the inelastic seismic responses are adequately sufficient to SNI 1726 2019 regarding drift limit. The other seismic responses are also discussed in terms of fundamental periods, inter-story drifts, story stiffness, and base shear. Referred to Indonesian Seismic Provision, SNI 1726 2019, it is found that single setback building has more adequate than multiple setbacks in terms of seismic responses. Then, the seismic assessments between these setbacks are explained to address the recommendations about future prevention toward damages and failures in steel buildings.

Reinforced concrete Special Moment Frame (RC-SMF) with irregularity in dimension experiences large inelastic deformation under ground motion. The building code for designing structural elements generally is focused on satisfying the strength and serviceability. On the other hand, the displacement-based design (DBD) procedure is based on building performance level. This paper presents a devoted study of designing structural elements of 8 story RC-SMF with vertical irregularity using the DBD method. This method is mainly using energy-work balance concept with pre-selected yield mechanism and target drift. Moreover, a new lateral force distribution method is used in this study which accounts for inelastic dynamic response and higher mode effects. Strong column-weak beam mechanism is used to design beam and column, and beam moment capacity of each floor is calculated by equating external work to internal work approach. Furthermore, column design strength is taken as the combination of factored gravity loads and maximum expected strength of the beam. The time history analysis results show that story drift is below than the target drift and achieve the desired performance level. Moreover, the results also show lateral force distribution is very close to the lateral shear distribution which obtained from time history analysis.
