AbstractThis chapter illustrates the critical importance of evaluation in development projects. It explores the relevance, processes, and specifics of a project to introduce energy-efficient cook stoves in two traditional industries in Chad. Although Chad benefits from great solar potential given its location and being a Sahelian country, biomass accounted for 94% of the primary energy supply in 2008, and only 2.2% of Chadian households have access to electricity. The beer brewing and meat grilling sectors in particular use enormous quantities of limited and expensive firewood. Locally developed energy-efficient stoves for the two targeted sectors were available, but those technologies had not been commercialized and disseminated into the Chadian market. The project aimed to overcome issues of technology, financing, dissemination, resistance to change, and awareness to introduce and establish use of energy-efficient stoves in micro-scale food processing to achieve environmental and economic benefits, discussing the effectiveness of models introduced and adopted by project beneficiaries with related training. This chapter considers issues related to the project’s financing and sustainability and concludes with lessons provided by the evaluation, including engagement with targeted beneficiaries, awareness of local context, and consideration of size and scale for a demonstration project that can be scaled up in future programs.

Abstract This article sets out to critically examine how the idea of what a book can be is changing in relation to the growth of digitally social communities and the writers and readers who congregate in these spaces, and to identify how this connectivity is altering the balance of power between the traditional industry and those who choose to write and share their work in a global village. By offering a succinct consideration of the role of social media, citizen authors, communities, gender, and genre, it can potentially help publishers determine if they need to alter the way they provide access to the industry, conventionally through the hierarchical author–agent–publisher gatekeeping system, in order to take advantage of new authors who are writing in digital communities and building a following there.

The COVID-19 crisis has changed how firms and industries do business – at least for now. What is uncertain, however, is the duration of that change. Will the industry change induced by the COVID-19 crisis persist and, if so, for how long? Can a crisis, and particularly the COVID-19 crisis, act as a more permanent change agent and create an environment that mimics the entrepreneurial opportunity that industry forcing functions create? If yes, then there is cause to consider the entrepreneurial opportunity that the COVID-19 crisis provides. In this paper, we review the changes that the pandemic has brought to business practices. Furthermore, we discuss the differences between crisis-based opportunity and entrepreneurial opportunity created by industry forcing functions in order to illuminate the ability of a COVID-19 crisis–induced Low Touch Economy to sustainably create entrepreneurial opportunities. We show examples and list the attributes of industry forcing functions that have already provided sustainable entrepreneurial opportunity. Then, we match these attributes with the factors pertaining to the COVID-19-related Low Touch Economy. We find that the COVID-19 crisis has similarities and differences to the traditional industry forcing functions started by disruptive technologies. However, unlike traditional industry forcing functions, the COVID-19 crisis acts in a pan-industrial manner, making the impact of the pandemic more profound. Furthermore, the timing of the pandemic is important too: the COVID-19 crisis struck during the emergence of a Schumpeterian wave of Industry 4.0 and accelerated the adoption of its most important harbingers. We provide researchers and practitioners a lens through which to review not only the COVID-19 crisis’s possibility of lasting effects, but also how it will affect entrepreneurs.

The COVID-19 crisis has underlined the need for accelerated innovation to rapidly help business solve social problems. These problems require access to capabilities and knowledge that no single organization or existing supply chain possesses. Drawing on the experience of the open innovation and rapid-scale-up achieved by the VentilatorChallengeUK to address a shortage of ventilators required by patients seriously ill with COVID-19, this article develops a framework for accelerated innovation and delivery that crosses traditional industry boundaries. It offers a series of important lessons for how open innovation, exaptation, and ecosystem strategies—backed by a set of enabling initiatives—can be used to solve multi-faceted social and business problems at speed.

The timber industry complex of Russia has no less potential than the recognized flagships of the Russian industry – the oil and gas sector, the metallurgical and military-industrial complex. The potentialities of the Russian woodworking industry and such a traditional industry as sawmilling are especially great. According to available forecasts, despite significant growth in the production of panel materials, cardboard and paper, the demand for sawnwood will increase, especially in Europe. The recommendations for improving sawmill production emphasize the need to increase the volume of sawn timber drying, expand the range of products by producing targeted dry sawn timber, and bring the requirements for the quality of sawn timber drying to consumer requirements. Specific issues related to quality management of woodworking products have basically been resolved. At the same time, there are a number of bottlenecks in the management of drying quality that cannot be solved at once. This is especially true for issues related to the significant instability of the properties of wood subjected to drying. The system of controlled moisture exchange proposed by the authors makes it possible to largely neutralize the influence of the scatter of the initial properties of wood on the entire drying process. This applies to both the moisture removal process itself and the development of internal stresses in the wood with the provision of the required margin in order to avoid wood cracking. Moreover, the controlled moisture exchange system allows the formation of a drying regime in accordance with the required quality category with minimal energy consumption for drying.

As a promising technology to converge the traditional industry with the digital economy, digital twin (DT) is being investigated by researchers and practitioners across many different fields. The importance of data to DT cannot be overstated. Data plays critical roles in constructing virtual models, building cyber-physical connections, and executing intelligent operations. The unique characteristics of DT put forward a set of new requirements on data. Against this background, this paper discusses the emerging requirements on DT-related data with respect to data gathering, mining, fusion, interaction, iterative optimization, universality, and on-demand usage. A new notion, namely digital twin data (DTD), is introduced. This paper explores some basic principles and methods for DTD gathering, storage, interaction, association, fusion, evolution and servitization, as well as the key enabling technologies. Based on the theoretical underpinning provided in this paper, it is expected that more DT researchers and practitioners can incorporate DTD into their DT development process.

AbstractTransforming a traditional industry by adopting autonomous solutions is complex, generating paradoxical tensions on multiple aggregate levels. We undertake an in-depth case study of a leading maritime autonomous solutions provider and its ecosystem partners. We apply the paradox lens using thematic analysis. Our research contributes to the digital servitization literature by identifying six paradoxes inherent in the shift to autonomous solutions, nested in the micro, meso, and macro levels. We develop a multilevel framework of organizational paradoxes, delineating cascading effects of paradoxes across levels. We offer valuable insights for providers to integrate multilevel perspectives into the shift to autonomous solutions.

Abstract This study aims to propose an intelligent operational advisory solution that guides the plant operation team to optimal HPPT/LPPT pressure settings that compensate for the variation in ambient temperature effect to maximize plant revenue. Traditional industry practice is to operate a gas-oil-separation-plant (GOSP) at fixed operating conditions ignoring the variation in the ambient temperature (Ta) leading to a loss in oil recovery and associated revenue. The variation of ambient temperature (Ta) highly affects the separation process, where ambient temperature varies greatly from summer to winter. To develop a correlation, a GOSP model was constructed by OmegaLand dynamic simulator using a typical Saudi Aramco GOSP design. Oil recovery values were determined by running the process simulation for a typical range of high-pressure production trap (HPPT), low-pressure production trap (LPPT), and ambient temperature (Ta). Then, an intelligent approach was built to determine the optimum pressure of LPPT and HPPT units for each ambient temperature condition using an artificial intelligence technique. Results show that liquid recovery decreases with an increase in ambient temperature at constant HPPT and LPPT pressures, indicating adjustment in HPPT or LPPT pressure responding to the temperature variations can improve the oil recovery. At constant LPPT pressure and ambient temperature, the oil recovery increases with an increase in HPPT pressure until it reaches the optimum value and then decreases with further increase in the HPPTpressure suggesting that there is an optimum HPPT pressure at which oil recovery is maximum. At fixed ambient temperature and fixed HPPT pressure, liquid recovery increases with increasing LPPT pressure until it reaches the optimum value, and then it decreases with further increase in the LPPT pressure suggesting that there is an optimum LPPT pressure at which oil recovery is maximum.

This article examines the discourses of streaming success within the television industry by focusing on Netflix and two of the service’s original series: Fauda and La Casa de Papel. Using publicly available secondary data through 2019, this analysis argues the transnational platform’s efforts to redefine successful television while maintaining a high level of data secrecy necessitate the discursive construction of a global and undifferentiated audience. Yet, rather than representing a break with the past, the discourses of streaming success reveal Netflix to be a television institution attempting to address traditional industry challenges.

PurposeThis paper aims to propose a novel approach to constructing an economic taxonomy that demonstrates the complex relationships between firms, which are not fully revealed by traditional industry classification systems such as the NAICS or ICB.Design/methodology/approachBased on narrative economic theory, data from CNBC news reports between 01/01/2019 and 03/27/2019 regarding four selected firms, namely, Walmart, Amazon, Netflix and Boeing, were analyzed and coded as the basis to guide the construction of a firm-to-firm relationship taxonomy.FindingsThe relationships between firms are more complex than the simple relationships defined by the traditional classification systems with yes or no in terms of production process (NAICS) or major profit resource (ICB). Based on the sample firms, the authors proposed a four-layer hierarchical taxonomy framework that quantitatively reveals the inherent contradictory relationships between firms, which the authors defined as competition vs consistency. The proposed taxonomy framework is sufficiently flexible to accommodate complex relationships between firms, and it is also adaptable to new information. Under both the competition and consistency categories in the taxonomy model, more detailed subcategories are further coded into two more layers quantitatively to represent the firms' nuanced relationships.Originality/valueThis study provides a novel atheoretical approach to reveal complex firm relationships utilizing narrative text data gathered from news media. The framework of the firm relationship taxonomy constructed in this study provides an alternative and supplementary approach to the classical industry classification systems that can quantitatively specify comprehensive and dynamic connections between firms.
