Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the head and neck is a rare phenomenon, more so when it is an extracranial AVM like the auricle. AVMs are caused by genetic mutations. Most are probably present in the subclinical form at birth and then evolve; some may arise postnatally or during adolescence or get aggravated by precipitating factors like trauma, infection or hormonal influence like puberty or pregnancy. Once diagnosed, the feeding vessels have to be identified using radiological investigations. They are then embolised via means of percutaneous embolisation and surgical resection.

AbstractA plethora of pathologies occurs in the skeletal and soft tissues of the oro-facial region that are reactive. These arise as a result of chronic low-grade inflammation, trauma, hormonal influence and other causes. Varied types of clinical, radiological and histological presentations are often associated with these lesions that pose a diagnostic dilemma to the clinician. This chapter describes in detail the common reactive lesions of the maxillofacial region with an emphasis on correlating the clinical and investigational findings to arrive at the correct diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment.

Ovarian cystic lesions, once considered uncommon in children, represent nowadays subject for many studies. Controversies regarding the diagnostic and treatment still exist. Unspecific symptoms and difficulties in performing an accurate ultrasound in children, sometimes led to misdiagnose this condition. Ovarian cystic lesions in premenarcheal girls may have hormonal influence, changing the biochemical balance, so an endocrinologist should be consulted. The main goal is to preserve the adnexal tissue. The purpose of this study is to analize the diagnostic and treatment of ovarian cystic lesions in premenarcheal girls, highlighting the opportunity of a multidisciplinary team and the necessity of the ovarian preservation.

Abstract: Introduction and aim: To assess the prevalence of lactase gene promoter C/T13910 phenotypes in patients with lactose intolerance symptoms and to analyze the birth-cohort phenomenon in lactose-intolerant patients. Method: 1266 patients consulted between 2010 and 2017 were enrolled. Five-year cohort periods of patients born before 1939 and after 1995 were defined and the prevalence of C/T13910 phenotypes was calculated. C/T13910 phenotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction. Results: The prevalence of the CC phenotype was 43.1%, TC was detected in 44.3% and TT in 12.6% of the cases. The prevalence of the CC phenotype showed a non-linear incremental increase in females, from 9.13% in those born before 1939 to 37.7% in those born after 1995. Conclusion: The prevalence of CC phenotype raised incrementally in females, suggesting a gender/hormonal influence. Orv Hetil. 2019; 160(14): 549–554.
