Electrically conductive polymers are promising materials for charge transfer from living cells to the anodes of electrochemical biosensors and biofuel cells. The modification of living cells by polypyrrole (PPy) causes shortened cell lifespan, burdens the replication process, and diminishes renewability in the long term. In this paper, the viability and morphology non-modified, inactivated, and PPy-modified yeasts were evaluated. The results displayed a reduction in cell size, an incremental increase in roughness parameters, and the formation of small structural clusters of polymers on the yeast cells with the increase in the pyrrole concentration used for modification. Yeast modified with the lowest pyrrole concentration showed minimal change; thus, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was designed using yeast modified by a solution containing 0.05 M pyrrole and compared with the characteristics of an MFC based on non-modified yeast. The maximal generated power of the modified system was 47.12 mW/m2, which is 8.32 mW/m2 higher than that of the system based on non-modified yeast. The open-circuit potentials of the non-modified and PPy-modified yeast-based cells were 335 mV and 390 mV, respectively. Even though applying a PPy layer to yeast increases the charge-transfer efficiency towards the electrode, the damage done to the cells due to modification with a higher concentration of PPy diminishes the amount of charge transferred, as the current density drops by 846 μA/cm2. This decrease suggests that modification by PPy may have a cytotoxic effect that greatly hinders the metabolic activity of yeast.

Background Emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and evidence of waning vaccine efficacy present significant obstacles toward controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Booster doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines may address these concerns by both amplifying and broadening the immune responses seen with initial vaccination regimens. Methods In a phase 2 study, a single booster dose of a SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike protein vaccine with Matrix-M adjuvant (NVX-CoV2373) was administered to healthy adult participants 18 to 84 years of age approximately 6 months following their primary two-dose vaccination series. Safety and immunogenicity parameters were assessed, including assays for IgG, MN50, and hACE2 receptor binding inhibition against the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain and select variants (B.1.351 [Beta], B.1.1.7 [Alpha], B.1.617.2 [Delta], and B.1.1.529 [Omicron]). This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04368988. Findings An incremental increase in the incidence of solicited local and systemic reactogenicity events was observed with subsequent vaccinations. Following the booster, incidence rates of local and systemic reactions were 82.5% (13.4% ≥ Grade 3) and 76.5% (15.3% ≥ Grade 3), respectively, compared to 70.0% (5.2% ≥ Grade 3) and 52.8% (5.6% ≥ Grade 3), respectively, following the primary vaccination series. Events were primarily mild or moderate in severity and transient in nature, with a median duration of 1.0 to 2.5 days. Immune responses seen 14 days following the primary vaccination series were compared with those observed 28 days following the booster (Day 35 and Day 217, respectively). For the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain, serum IgG geometric mean titers (GMTs) increased ~4.7-fold from 43,905 ELISA units (EU) at day 35 to 204,367 EU at Day 217. Neutralization (MN50) assay GMTs showed a similar increase of ~4.1-fold from 1,470 at day 35 to 6,023 at Day 217. A functional hACE2 receptor binding inhibition assay analyzing activity against ancestral and variant strains of SARS-CoV-2 at Day 189 vs Day 217 found 54.4-fold (Ancestral), 21.9 fold (Alpha), 24.5-fold (Beta), 24.4-fold (Delta), and 20.1-fold (Omicron) increases in titers. An anti-rS IgG activity assay comparing the same time points across the same SARS-CoV-2 strains found titers improved 61.2-fold, 85.9-fold, 65.0-fold, 92.5 fold, and 73.5 fold, respectively. Interpretation Administration of a booster dose of NVX-CoV2373 approximately 6 months following the primary vaccination series resulted in an incremental increase in reactogenicity along with enhanced immune responses. For both the prototype strain and all variants evaluated, immune responses following the booster were notably higher than those associated with high levels of efficacy in phase 3 studies of the vaccine.

Although cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in women globally, cardiovascular care for women remains suboptimal, with poorer outcomes than for men. During the past two decades, there has been an incremental increase in research and publications on CVD in women, addressing sex-specific risk factors, symptoms, pathophysiology, treatment, prevention and identification of inequities in care. Nonetheless, once women have manifested CVD, they continue to have increasingly worse outcomes than men. An approach to addressing these global disparities has been the worldwide establishment of specialised centres providing cardiovascular care for women. These women’s heart centres (WHCs) allow a comprehensive approach to the cardiovascular care of women across the lifespan. The purpose of this article is to define the need for and role of these specialised centres by outlining sex-specific gaps in CVD care, and to provide guidance on components within WHCs that may be considered when establishing such programmes.

Abstract Objectives To compare the prevalence of pre- and postoperative osseous deformities and intra-articular lesions in patients with persistent pain following arthroscopic femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) correction and to identify imaging findings associated with progressive cartilage damage. Methods Retrospective study evaluating patients with hip pain following arthroscopic FAI correction between 2010 and 2018. Pre- and postoperative imaging studies were analyzed independently by two blinded readers for osseous deformities (cam-deformity, hip dysplasia, acetabular overcoverage, femoral torsion) and intra-articular lesions (chondro-labral damage, capsular lesions). Prevalence of osseous deformities and intra-articular lesions was compared with paired t-tests/McNemar tests for continuous/dichotomous data. Association between imaging findings and progressive cartilage damage was assessed with logistic regression. Results Forty-six patients (mean age 29 ± 10 years; 30 female) were included. Postoperatively, 74% (34/46) of patients had any osseous deformity including 48% (22/46) acetabular and femoral deformities. Ninety-six percent (44/46) had an intra-articular lesion ranging from 20% (9/46) for femoral to 65% (30/46) for acetabular cartilage lesions. Prevalence of hip dysplasia increased (2 to 20%, p = 0.01) from pre- to postoperatively while prevalence of cam-deformity decreased (83 to 28%, p < 0.001). Progressive cartilage damage was detected in 37% (17/46) of patients and was associated with extensive preoperative cartilage damage > 2 h, i.e., > 60° (OR 7.72; p = 0.02) and an incremental increase in postoperative alpha angles (OR 1.18; p = 0.04). Conclusion Prevalence of osseous deformities secondary to over- or undercorrrection was high. Extensive preoperative cartilage damage and higher postoperative alpha angles increase the risk for progressive degeneration. Key Points • The majority of patients presented with osseous deformities of the acetabulum or femur (74%) and with intra-articular lesions (96%) on postoperative imaging. • Prevalence of hip dysplasia increased (2 to 20%, p = 0.01) from pre- to postoperatively while prevalence of a cam deformity decreased (83 to 28%, p < 0.001). • Progressive cartilage damage was present in 37% of patients and was associated with extensive preoperative cartilage damage > 2 h (OR 7.72; p = 0.02) and with an incremental increase in postoperative alpha angles (OR 1.18; p = 0.04).

Abstract Background There is no data specific to the addition of renal dysfunction and age 50–64 years as risk parameters to the CHA2DS2-VA score, which is known as the R2CHA2DS2-VA score, among NVAF patients. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to validate the R2CHA2DS2-VA score for predicting thromboembolism in Thai NVAF patients. Methods Thai NVAF patients were prospectively enrolled in a nationwide multicenter registry from 27 hospitals during 2014–2020. Each component of the CHA2DS2-VA and R2CHA2DS2-VA scores was scored and recorded. The main outcomes were thromboembolism, including ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and/or systemic embolism. The annual incidence rate of thromboembolism among patients in each R2CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VA risk score category is shown as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The performance of the R2CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VA scores was demonstrated using c-statistics. Net reclassification index was calculated. Calibration plat was used to assess agreement between observed probabilities and predicted probabilities of both scoring system. Results A total of 3402 patients were enrolled during 2014–2020. The average age of patients was 67.38 ± 11.27 years. Of those, 46.9% had renal disease, 30.7% had a history of heart failure, and 17.1% had previous stroke or TIA. The average R2CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VA scores were 3.92 ± 1.92 and 2.98 ± 1.43, respectively. Annual thromboembolic risk increased with incremental increase in R2CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VA scores. Oral anticoagulants had benefit in stroke prevention in NVAF patients with an R2CHA2DS2-VA score of 2 or more (adjusted HR: 0.630, 95% CI 0.413–0.962, p = 0.032). The c-statistics were 0.630 (95% CI 0.61–0.65) and 0.627 (95% CI 0.61–0.64), for R2CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VA scores respectively. NRI was 2.2%. The slope and R2 of the calibration plot were 0.73 and 0.905 for R2CHA2DS2-VA and 0.70 and 0.846 for CHA2DS2-VA score respectively. Conclusions R2CHA2DS2-VA score was found to be at least as good as CHA2DS2-VA score for predicting thromboembolism in Thai patients with NVAF. Similar to CHA2DS2-VA score, thromboembolism increased with incremental increase in R2CHA2DS2-VA score.

AbstractCoral reefs across the globe are threatened by warming oceans. The last few years have seen the worst mass coral bleaching events recorded, with more than one quarter of all reefs irreversibly impacted. Considering the widespread devastation, we need to increase our efforts to understanding the physiological and metabolic shifts underlying the breakdown of this important symbiotic ecosystem. Here, we investigated the proteome (PRIDE accession # PXD011668) of both host and symbionts of the reef-building coral Acropora millepora exposed to ambient (~ 28 °C) and elevated temperature (~ 32 °C for 2 days, following a five-day incremental increase) and explored associated biomolecular changes in the symbiont, with the aim of gaining new insights into the mechanisms underpinning the collapse of the coral symbiosis. We identified 1,230 unique proteins (774 host and 456 symbiont) in the control and thermally stressed corals, of which 107 significantly increased and 125 decreased in abundance under elevated temperature relative to the control. Proteins involved in oxidative stress and proteolysis constituted 29% of the host proteins that increased in abundance, with evidence of impairment to endoplasmic reticulum and cytoskeletal regulation proteins. In the symbiont, we detected a decrease in proteins responsible for photosynthesis and energy production (33% of proteins decreased in abundance), yet minimal signs of oxidative stress or proteolysis. Lipid stores increased > twofold despite reduction in photosynthesis, suggesting reduced translocation of carbon to the host. There were significant changes in proteins related to symbiotic state, including proteins linked to nitrogen metabolism in the host and the V-ATPase (-0.6 fold change) known to control symbiosome acidity. These results highlight key differences in host and symbiont proteomic adjustments under elevated temperature and identify two key proteins directly involved in bilateral nutrient exchange as potential indicators of symbiosis breakdown.

A  group of Filipino seminarians (experimental group) had an intervention of Positive thoughts enhancement and Interpersonal skills  developed by the researcher  (11 modules)  tailored fit for a Filipino culture seminarians and another  group of Filipino seminarians (controlled group) had a normal setting lecture of formation.  A pre-test and posttest of the seminarians’ psychosocial development with a Psychosocial Development measurement tool (The Modified Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory - MEPSI) was used to find out if there was an efficacy of the intervention. The posttest result of the experimental group was significantly higher than those of the control group which indicated that the intervention program (Positive Affirmation Skills Intervention – (PASI) was effective on the Psychosocial Development of the Seminarians. An incremental increase in the scores of the experimental group after exposure in the intervention and the participants in the experimental group experienced not only an enhancement of their psychosocial development attributes but had a high level of self-depth as compared to the control group which made an impact on their psychosocial development characteristics and attributes.

We investigate whether the comparability of financial statements changes after a switch from International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in substance (i.e., content of IFRS) to IFRS in both substance and form (i.e., IFRS as issued by the IASB). While the substance of the accounting standards remains the same, form is added to the adoption in that it is now formally referred to as “IFRS as issued by the IASB.” We use data from South Africa, a country whose local generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP) was the same, word-for-word, as IFRS prior to the adoption of IFRS as issued by the IASB in 2005. We compare South African firms with firms in other countries, divided into two groups: mandatory IFRS adopters and non-adopters. We find evidence of increased comparability of financial statements of South African firms with both adopters and non-adopters. Furthermore, we find a global increase in the comparability of firms’ financial statements, consistent with market changes unrelated to IFRS adoption. However, an incremental increase in the comparability of financial statements of South African firms with the adoption of IFRS relative to non-adopting firms is consistent with benefits from South Africa’s addition of form to its existing in-substance adoption of IFRS. This increased comparability is also consistent with the benefits observed in the accounting amounts of firms from other adopting countries becoming more comparable with those of South African firms.

In this paper we use the simulation model developed by Hanushek and Woessman (2011) to assess the economic impact of a reform of the Moroccan education system that would improve the cognitive achievement levels of students, as measured by the PISA score tests. We consider three alternative scenarios to be compared to the economic situation without reform of the education system, referred as "status quo". Our work allows to predict future economic growth that Morroco would achieve through the incremental increase in students’ test scores over a period of 76 years, i.e. the expected life expectancy of a person born today. The results show that the discounted value of expected economic flows over the period 2021-2097 would represent between 149.8 and 718.2% of Morocco's current GDP, depending on the reform scenarios. Similarly, GDP per capita could be increased by up to 1.89 percentage points per year in the long run. Our results show that the expected economic gains from a reform of the education system would be much greater than its budgetary cost. In the conclusion, several public policies based on these results are discussed.

Guided by a Transactional Model of anxious solitude development, we tested friend and maternal influences on continuity and change in youth anxious solitude from 3rd through 7th grade, as well as the influence of youth anxious solitude on decreased friendship participation and increased maternal overcontrol over time. Participants were 230 American youth (57% girls) selected for longitudinal study from a public-school screening sample (n = 688). Peers reported on anxious solitude, both peers and youth reported on reciprocated friendship, and youth reported on their mother’s overcontrol annually. Stability and incremental change in youth, friend, and maternal factors were tested in an autoregressive cross-lagged panel analytic model. Having few mutual friendships predicted incremental increase in youth anxious solitude in mid-elementary school, then youth anxious solitude predicted the loss of friendships after the middle school transition. Additionally, youth anxious solitude in third grade evoked increased maternal overcontrol in fourth grade, but the reverse direction of effect was not supported. Youth’s participation in few friendships also evoked mothers’ overcontrol, which exacerbated their child’s loss of friendships in elementary school. Taken together, having few mutual friends contributed to youth anxious solitude and maternal overcontrol, and subsequently these factors further exacerbated youth’s loss of friendships.
