A new highly diastereoselective synthesis of the polyhydroxylated pyrrolidine alkaloid (±)-codonopsinol B and its N-nor-methyl analogue, starting from achiral materials, is presented. The strategy relies on the trans-stereoselective epoxidation of 2,3-dihydroisoxazole with in situ-generated DMDO, the syn-selective α-chelation-controlled addition of vinyl-MgBr/CeCl3 to the isoxazolidine-4,5-diol intermediate, and the substrate-directed epoxidation of the terminal double bond of the corresponding γ-amino-α,β-diol with aqueous hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by phosphotungstic heteropoly acid. Each of the key reactions proceeded with an excellent diastereoselectivity (dr > 95:5). (±)-Codonopsinol B was prepared in 10 steps with overall 8.4% yield. The antiproliferative effect of (±)-codonopsinol B and its N-nor-methyl analogue was evaluated using several cell line models.

A Palladium-doped silica-supported heteropoly acid (HPW) (1%Pd-HPW/SiO2) bi-functional catalyst was produced using ultrasonic and conventional procedures. Both forms of catalyst were characterized with distinct analytical approaches in order to access the advantages of each one. The presence of the required functional groups in the catalyst was confirmed using FT-IR. The crystallinity of ultrasonically generated 1%Pd-HPW/SiO2 was confirmed with XRD. The existence of necessary elements in the catalyst was also suggested by XPS and EDX data. BET was used to calculate the surface area of the ultrasonically synthesized catalyst (395 m2 g−1), and it was found to be greater than that of the non-ultrasonic synthesized catalyst (382 m2 g−1). The N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm indicated mesoporous structures. The SEM morphology at a similar magnification exhibited quite different shapes. In comparison to traditional methods, ultrasonic approaches produce higher yields in less time and use less energy. Furthermore, the effect of the preparation method of the 1%Pd-HPW/SiO2 catalyst was extensively studied with respect to the synthesis of octahydroquinazolinones. Excellent product yields, a fast reaction time, and simple work-up methods are some peculiarities associated with the ultrasonically synthesized catalyst. The recycling study was also investigated and found suitable for up to four reaction cycles.

A complex of modern physicochemical methods (X-ray phase analysis, low-temperature adsorption of nitrogen, scanning electron microscopy, element analysis)was used to studythe phase and texture properties of the phosphomolybdenum heteropoly acid–titanium oxide catalytic system. It was found that the optimal content of phosphomolybdenum heteropoly acid, which leads to an increase in the catalytic activity of titanium dioxide, is 7% wt.: the diisopropyl ether yield is higher,it reaches maximum values in a shorter period of time, and the samples are characterized by greater stability. It is shown that the textural characteristics of the specific surface area and dispersion are not the key factors responsible for the catalytic activity. It has been suggested that the activity of phosphomolybdenum heteropoly acid-containing samples is associated with the emergence of a new type of active centers that exhibit increased electron-donorproperties(terminal oxygen atoms of the outer frag-ments of octahedra М = О heteropolyacids). A drop in the catalytic activity of samples with a phosphomolyb-denum heteropoly acid content of more than 7% wt. associated with the formation of surface metaphosphoric acid and entails a decrease in active centers.
