At present, wireless network technology is advancing rapidly, and intelligent equipment is gradually popularized, which rapidly developed the mobile streaming media business. All kinds of mobile video applications have enriched people’s lives by carrying huge traffic randomly. Wireless networks (WNs) are facing an unprecedented burden, which allocates very important wireless video resources. Similarly, in WNs, the network status is dynamic and the terminal is heterogeneous, which causes the traditional video transmission system to fail to meet the needs of users. Hence, Scalable Video Coding (SVC) has been introduced in the video transmission system to achieve bit rate adaptation. However, in a strictly hierarchical traditional computer network, the wireless resource allocation strategy usually takes throughput as the only way to optimize the target, and it is terrible to make more optimizations for scalable video transmission. This article proposed a cross-layer design to enable information to be transmitted between the wireless base station and the video server to achieve joint optimization. To improve users’ satisfaction with video services, the wireless resource allocation problem and the video stream scheduling problem are jointly considered, which keep the optimization space larger. Based on the proposed architecture, we further study the design of wireless resource allocation algorithms and rate-adaptive algorithms for the scenario of multiuser transmission of scalable video in the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) downlink. Experimental outcomes have shown substantial performance enhancement of the proposed work.

Live virtual reality (VR) streaming (a.k.a., 360-degree video streaming) has become increasingly popular because of the rapid growth of head‐mounted displays and 5G networking deployment. However, the huge bandwidth and the energy required to deliver live VR frames in the wireless video sensor network (WVSN) become bottlenecks, making it impossible for the application to be deployed more widely. To solve the bandwidth and energy challenges, VR video viewport prediction has been proposed as a feasible solution. However, the existing works mainly focuses on the bandwidth usage and prediction accuracy and ignores the resource consumption of the server. In this study, we propose a lightweight neural network-based viewport prediction method for live VR streaming in WVSN to overcome these problems. In particular, we (1) use a compressed channel lightweight network (C-GhostNet) to reduce the parameters of the whole model and (2) use an improved gate recurrent unit module (GRU-ECA) and C-GhostNet to process the video data and head movement data separately to improve the prediction accuracy. To evaluate the performance of our method, we conducted extensive experiments using an open VR user dataset. The experiments results demonstrate that our method achieves significant server resource saving, real-time performance, and high prediction accuracy, while achieving low bandwidth usage and low energy consumption in WVSN, which meets the requirement of live VR streaming.

Wireless video communication is challenging due to vulnerability of media bitstreams to channel distortions. Investigation has been carried out on wireless video channel under tight networking resource budget. One of the challenges is the impact of channel errors on the quality of media streams with high motion activity. Motion activity in this context defines the magnitude of activity displacement in video sequence. Based on the analysis, Media Motion-based Resource Distribution (MRD) is proposed to maximize the average received video quality over wireless system, by regulating the resource distribution of the media streams based on their motion activity characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the average received video quality performance under tight resource constraints budget.
