An Explorations in Media Ecology appreciative inquiry: Onward and upward

This article combines appreciative inquiry (AI) as well as digital object interviewing and other constructs from the field to examine Explorations in Media Ecology (EME) in its online format. It provides an in-depth review of the journal and its issues produced over the past twenty years. The article surveys EME’s editorial advances and transitions, its coverage of the media environment, its interdisciplinary range, along with its demographics and reach. Throughout this article, EME’s digital publication speaks for itself describing its own strengths and opportunities as manifested since its origination. Along the way, this article utilizes anecdotes and quotes from EME’s contributors that illuminate and support the survey results. Finally, this article through these quotes, gives EME a voice; it offers suggestions to build on its strengths and make use of opportunities for an onward and upward future.

Using Annotation for Transparent Inquiry (ATI) to Teach Qualitative Research Methods

In political science, qualitative analytic methods are rarely taught using “active learning” strategies. We discuss a novel approach to teaching such methods: having students engage with scholarship that has been annotated using Annotation for Transparent Inquiry (ATI). ATI allows authors to annotate passages in a digital publication to clarify methodology, add detail about evidence or analysis, or link to data sources. Learning methods through engagement with annotated articles allows students to interact with original data and to better understand and evaluate how authors collected, analyzed, and used those data. This leads students to learn research methods in a way that more closely approximates how they will use those methods in their own research. We present a general description of strategies for teaching with ATI. We illustrate the approach using three examples of instructors teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. We conclude with recommendations for effectively using ATI in the classroom.

Studi Literatur Potensi Pemanfaatan Terak Nikel (Slag Nikel) sebagai Agregat pada Mortar dan Beton

The increasing of infrastructure development has an impact on increasing demand for construction materials. Generally, construction materials come from nature and still being exploited, which could lead to environmental degradation. Visually, nickel slag resembles gravel and sand which can be used as an alternative material. Therefore, this literature study aims to determine the characteristics and potential utilization of nickel slag gathered from Indonesian lateritic nickel ore and its application as an aggregate in mortar and concrete. The method used in this study is a review of several literatures from a reputable digital publication database with the keywords "terak nikel" and "nickel slag". In addition, several criteria are also used as filters in order to get the more focused literatures. Although the fluctuations in its mechanical properties was reported, it can still be overcome by using slag nickel slag as coarse and fine aggregate simultaneously. The results also show that nickel slag can be used as fine or coarse aggregate in concrete up to 100% content as well and as fine aggregate in asphalt application mortars up to 50% content.

Mapping Senufo: Reframing Questions, Reevaluating Sources, and Reimagining a Digital Monograph

Mapping Senufo: Art, Evidence, and the Production of Knowledge – an in-progress, collaborative, born-digital publication – will offer a model for joining theories about the construction of identities and the politics of knowledge production with research and publication practice. In this article, we examine how computational methods have led us to reframe research questions, reevaluate sources, and reimagine the form of a digital monograph. We also demonstrate how our use of digital technologies, attention to iteration, and collaborative mode of working have generated fresh insights into a corpus of arts identified as Senufo, the nature of evidence for art-historical research, and digital publication. We posit that the form of a digital publication itself can bring processes of knowledge construction to the fore and unsettle expectations of a tidy, authoritative narrative.
