Li Xianglan, or Ri Koran in Japanese, was a screen sensation and popular culture icon during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Her story of success, however, was overshadowed by her hidden identity as Yamaguchi Yoshiko, a Manchurian-born Japanese promoting Japanese imperialist ideology through the guise of her on-screen Chinese personae. The National Policy Company Manchurian Film Association (Man'ei for short) was established by the Kwantung Army to accelerate the dissemination of Japanese imperialist propaganda. The choice of Ri Koran as the face of Man'ei underlines the significance of her controversial and ambiguous allure, which enabled her to navigate, or “border cross,” the complex waters of wartime politics and popular culture during the Sino-Japanese conflict. Through a detailed analysis of one of the Continental Trilogy of films, China Nights (1940), this thesis illustrates how Ri Koran was crafted into a living embodiment of “Hakko Ichiu”, the guiding ideological principle of The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. I investigate the manifestation of “Hakko Ichiu” (Gozoku Kyowa in the Manchurian context) though analysis of particular scenes in the film as well as its use of music, historically known as Continental Melodies. Drawing from existing scholarship by both historians and film scholars, this thesis establishes an important link between these two previously separate scholarly discourses on Ri Koran.

Abstract: This repeated measure experiment study aimed to explore LINUS students or Low Achiever (LA) students’ improvement in learning English language vocabularies using Mobile Augmented Visual Reality (MAVR). It specifically tried to analyse the effect of MAVR on the English vocabulary development of 45 primary school students from the LINUS programme in Selangor. In this study, they were provided access to an AVR-game based apps in learning English vocabularies with mobile computing devices. Vocabulary size was later measured using the British Picture Vocabulary Scale II and analysed with repeated measures ANOVA. Analysis showed that there was an increase in the scores and the differences between the levels of the within-subjects factor was significant. This implies that Mobile Augmented Visual Reality (MAVR) materials can be used as an interactive tool for LA learners in learning a language. Findings highlight the role of teachers in the implementation process and point out possible directions for more effective application of MAVR in this field. Keywords: Augmented Reality (AR), LINUS students, Mobile Augmented Reality (MAVR), Visual Reality (VR), Vocabulary.

Abstract This paper investigates the changing role of media devices in constructing fictive worlds through senses, and the changing relation we have to our senses. The demand for immersion in a virtual visual reality has its precedents, shown for example by the popularity of the kaleidoscope, the peeping box, the Guckkasten, or the panoramas. But while the immersive effect of these illusion spaces was based on visual perception, now we have multisensory interactive spaces that trigger our proprioception (body awareness and feeling of presence). The VR experience Hamlet Encounters offers a unique experience and exemplary use of distance, dislocation, and perception of one’s own senses.

This study aims to examine the figurative language used in two translated chapters taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's novel, Zarathustra. The two chapters chosen are namely Kebajikan yang Mengecilkan and Tiga Hal yang Jahat. This is a qualitative research which involves the stylistic approach in order to bring out the stylistic devices used in the chosen chapters; simile and personification. The data of this study were collected from the two translated chapters of the novel. In this study, it is found that a total of nine figures of speech were investigated: seven figures of simile and two other figures of personification respectively. The results of this study revealed that the simile device focused on illustrating the author's visual reality for the readers about the protagonist's situations, life-story, and imagination. On the other hand, the personification device illustrated the protagonist's visual aspects, ideas, and imagination which are very analogous to the author's perspective.
