Performing Arts Curation as a Means of Advocating for Change in Cultural Policy

This article explores the potentials of performing arts curation to challenge current European cultural policies. It opens with a brief comparison of the genealogy of the curator in the visual and performing arts. Suzana Milevska’s concept of “curatorial agency” and contemporary understandings of the “curator as an intermediary” serve to highlight the discrepancies between the socio-political conditions of production and circulation in the two fields. The second part of the article draws on interviews with five performing arts curators from independent organizations active within European project networks to further examine the implications of curating as a mediating cultural-political practice. Finally, in a context where cultural policies increasingly support market-oriented cultural actors, it calls for a stronger accountability of the performing arts curator in the negotiation of values between the artistic community, audiences, and policymakers.

The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian

M. Fabius Quintilianus was a prominent orator, declaimer, and teacher of eloquence in the first century ce. After his retirement he wrote the Institutio oratoria, a unique treatise in Antiquity because it is a handbook of rhetoric and an educational treatise in one. Quintilian’s fame and influence are not only based on the Institutio, but also on the two collections of Declamations which were attributed to him in late Antiquity. The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian aims to present Quintilian’s Institutio as a key treatise in the history of Graeco-Roman rhetoric and its influence on the theory and practice of rhetoric and education, from late Antiquity until the present day. It contains chapters on Quintilian’s educational programme, his concepts and classifications of rhetoric, his discussion of the five canons of rhetoric, his style, his views on literary criticism, declamation, and the relationship between rhetoric and law, and the importance of the visual and performing arts in his work. His huge legacy is presented in successive chapters devoted to Quintilian in late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, Northern Europe during the Renaissance, Europe from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century, and the United States of America. There are also chapters devoted to the biographical tradition, the history of printed editions, and modern assessments of Quintilian. The twenty-one authors of the chapters represent a wide range of expertise and scholarly traditions and thus offer a unique mixture of current approaches to Quintilian from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Practitioner-Educator Model for Human Factors/Ergonomics Education

Human factors/ergonomics is an applied discipline. As such, we question whether students are adequately prepared if they are not learning, at least in part, from instructors who have real-world experience applying human factors/ergonomics knowledge to practical design problems. A wide variety of other disciplines such as medicine, the building trades, clinical psychology, military strategy, aviation, and the visual and performing arts have all faced this question and come up with educational approaches that typically include educators who are highly skilled in the practice of the discipline. Terms such as practitioner-scholar and scientist-practitioner, and the apprentice models all reflect this notion of students learning from highly skilled, knowledgeable, and practiced professionals in their disciplines. Is it time for human factors/ergonomics education to adopt such a model?

From Self-Awareness to Purposeful Employment: Guiding Egyptian youth using arts-based learning

Alwan wa Awtar (A&A), a partner of the Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) programme, implements a youth programme supporting young people to shape their prospects through professional and soft skill development, safe learning space and non-formal education. A&A has learned important lessons throughout its journey. A safe learning environment, flexible learning techniques, visual and performing arts in education and participatory management are key approaches for successful youth programmes. During the COVID-19 period, many of the professional development programmes have been delivered online, which was a good example of adaptation to changing circumstances that ensured the sustainability and continued effectiveness of the programme.

A stage for neuroscience and art: the OHBM BrainArt SIG.

Science and art have been intertwined for centuries, both representing means for humans to represent, communicate and interpret our external and internal worlds. Our collective effort to gather and organize knowledge about the brain blends well with a wide array of human creative activities, from visual and performing arts to interactive media. It thus comes as no surprise that the Organization for Human Brain Mapping has a Special Interest Group (SIG) dedicated to providing a platform for (neuro)sci-art: the BrainArt SIG.Here, after properly introducing all the main characters, we follow the development of this captivating script: from its grassroots prelude within the Neuro Bureau to its recent virtual instantiations. In particular, we highlight our three latest Exhibitions (Ars Cerebri, 2019; Neurodiversity, 2020; BigData & me, 2021) and the associated Competitions, not forgetting the scientific visualization sessions that have contributed to the making of brainart a distinguishing feature of the OHBM annual meeting.

Exploring Benefits of the East Street and Greater Portmore Junior Centre Visual and Performing Arts After School Programme: Parental Perceptions

The purpose of this study was to explore how parents perceive the benefits of the East Street and Greater Portmore Junior Centre Visual and Performing Arts After School Program (JSVPASP). This research employs a qualitative research design which, according to Creswell (2014), is “a means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem” (p. 246). This research is therefore aimed at exploring recent and relevant research articles relating to visual and performing arts and its benefits to children. The objective of this study was also achieved by using data collecting techniques such as telephone interviews, face to face interviews, and field notes with 18 parents of students who were attending the centre for over 1 year. The interview results indicated that parents have seen improvement in their children’s academic performances, social skills, behaviours, and self-confidence while attending the Centre. The results of this study will be used to encourage stakeholders to invest in the Junior Centre programmes, to highlight its benefits, and to increase parental participation in the activities and development of the Junior Centre.
