Deviant Behaviour in Secondary School and its Impact on Students’ Learning

Students come to school to acquire knowledge, skills, positive behaviour and values for good citizenship. Students learning become more effective and meaningful when the classroom and school environment is calm and devoid of distractions. This study examined deviant behaviour in schools and how it impacts on students’ learning The study drew its sample from a population of public secondary schools in Edo State, Nigeria. The sample comprised 500 teachers selected through random sampling techniques from twenty secondary schools in the state. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection from the respondents. Descriptive statistics were employed in the analysis of data. The findings revealed that deviant behaviour was prevalent in urban and rural schools but was more prevalent in urban schools than in rural schools. The findings further revealed that the extent of prevalent of deviant behaviour in large schools was more than in small schools. Deviant behaviour severely impacted on students’ learning. The study concluded by recommending the adoption of appointing two principals to head large schools. Principals of large schools should employ collaboration with school management team to effectively combat deviant behaviours.

The Elephant and the Mouse: making a large department feel small and a small department feel large

Engineering Education in Canada is carried out at 44 currently accredited university programs. Collectively, the system graduates more than 12,000 new engineers each year. One quarter of those students study at a large schools having more than 1000 students in each yearly cohort. Many more study in medium-sized classes having more than 300 students each year. There also campuses where an engineering class is fewer than 30 students. How does the student experience differ from the opposite ends of this size spectrum?

Size matters

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between staff size and perceived organizational support (POS) in early childhood education (ECE) organizations. Design/methodology/approach – A territory-wide questionnaire survey was designed to investigate the perceptions of preschool teachers in Hong Kong on four dimensions of organizational support, namely, teacher participation in decision making, school management support, school performance in organizational support, and organizational negativity in organizational support. In total, 2,066 teachers from 189 schools were sampled with stratified random sampling. Confirmatory factor analysis and latent mean analysis were employed. Findings – There was a significant relationship between staff size and POS. Specifically, teachers working at small schools in terms of staff size reported significantly higher POS than their counterparts in medium and large schools in aspects including teacher participation in decision making, school management support, and school performance in POS. Conversely, both medium and large schools had higher scores on organizational negativity. Research limitations/implications – There may exist other factors (e.g. principal leadership), which are not investigated in this study, that influence POS. Future studies are needed to capture a fuller structural relationship among an array of factors that influence POS. Originality/value – Research on staff size and POS has been conducted separately, without one element informing the other. The findings of the present study will stimulate more research on POS and staff size. The study will stimulate thinking about whether larger preschools are more efficient than smaller preschools in terms of scale of economies in a marker driven, ECE context. Building upon the foundation laid by the study, future studies may explore the interaction between staff size and POS on intended student outcomes in ECE.

School Size and Incidents of Violence among Texas Middle Schools

<p>Although many studies have been conducted regarding (a) school violence in middle schools and (b) the size of schools, to date, no researcher appears to have examined the role that the size of the middle school plays in determining incidents of violence specifically fighting, assaults, and aggravated assaults. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the incidents of school violence, specifically fighting, assaults, and aggravated assaults, and the size of middle schools in the state of Texas for 3 school years. All 842 middle schools in Texas were included in this study. Compared to small schools, medium schools, and large schools, very small schools had a statistically significantly lower proportion of students involved in assaults, proportion of students involved in aggravated assaults, proportion of incidents of assaults, and proportion of incidents of aggravated assaults. Further, very small schools had a statistically significantly lower proportion of students involved in fights and proportion of incidents of fights than did large schools. A trend emerged across the 4 school sizes for all 6 indicators of school violence, which, in every case, reflected a sharp increase from very small schools to small schools—peaking at small schools. Thus, very small schools appear to be at a greater advantage than are other types of schools with respect to incidents of school violence. Implications of the findings are discussed.</p>
