Active rotor with trailing-edge flaps is a promising method to alleviate vibrations and noise level of helicopters. Hysteresis of the piezoelectric actuators used to drive the flaps can degrade the performance of an active rotor. In this study, bench-top tests are conducted to measure the nonlinear hysteresis of a double-acting piezoelectric actuator. Based on the experimental data, a rate-dependent hysteresis model is established by combining a Bouc–Wen model and a transfer function of a second order system. Good agreement is exhibited between the model outputs and the measured results for different frequencies. A compound control regime composed of a feedforward compensator and PID (Proportional–Integral–Derivative) feedback control is developed to suppress the hysteresis of this actuator. Bench-top test results demonstrate that this compound control regime is capable to suppress hysteresis at different frequencies from 10 Hz to 60 Hz, and errors between the desired actuator outputs and the measured outputs are reduced dramatically at different frequencies, revealing that this compound control regime has the potential to be implemented in an active helicopter rotor to suppress actuator hysteresis.

In this study, the structure of the trailing edge of the vertical axis offshore wind turbine blade is modified. First, according to the method of parameterization, the offshore wind turbine model is established, and a series of characteristics of the offshore wind turbine are obtained. Second, we add flaps with different lengths to the trailing edge of NACA0021 airfoil to obtain different dynamic characteristics. The angle of the additional trailing edge flaps is modified. Finally, a simulation model for the modified airfoil of the vertical axis offshore wind turbine is reestablished, and the variable characteristics of the performance is studied. Through the optimization and analysis of the blade structure, this study has obtained the best parameters of the length and angle of the offshore wind turbine blade trailing edge flap. The optimization of the blade structure changes the flow field around the blade, which significantly improves the maximum wind energy capture rate and self-starting ability of the vertical axis offshore wind turbine.

An active rotor with trailing-edge flaps is an effective approach to alleviate vibrations and noise in helicopters. In this study, a compact piezoelectric actuator is proposed to drive trailing-edge flaps. The two groups of piezoelectric stacks accommodated in the actuator operate in opposition, and double-acting output can be realized through the differential motion of these stacks. A theoretical model and a finite element model are established to predict the output capability of this actuator, and structural optimization is performed using the finite element model. A prototype is built and tested on a benchtop to assess its performance. Test results demonstrate that the actuator stiffness reaches 801 N/mm, and its output stroke is up to ± 0.27 mm when subjected to actuation voltage of 120 V. Agreement between measurements and simulations validates the accuracy of the established models. In addition, actuator outputs in failure modes are measured by canceling the supply voltage of one group of piezoelectric stacks. In this condition, the actuator can still generate acceptable outputs, and the initial position of the output end remains unchanged. Simulations and test results reveal that the proposed actuator achieves promising performance, and it is capable to be applied to a helicopter active rotor.

Abstract. This experimental load control study presents results of an active trailing-edge flap feedforward controller for wind turbine applications. The controller input is derived from pressure-based lift estimation methods that rely either on a quasi-steady method, based on a three-hole probe, or on an unsteady method that is based on three selected surface pressure ports. Furthermore, a standard feedback controller, based on force balance measurements, is compared to the feedforward control. A Clark-Y airfoil is employed for the wing that is equipped with a trailing-edge flap of x/c=30% chordwise extension. Inflow disturbances are created by a two-dimensional active grid. The Reynolds number is Re=290 000, and reduced frequencies of k=0.07 up to k=0.32 are analyzed. Within the first part of the paper, the lift estimation methods are compared. The surface-pressure-based method shows generally more accurate results, whereas the three-hole probe estimate overpredicts the lift amplitudes with increasing frequencies. Nonetheless, employing the latter as input to the feedforward controller is more promising as a beneficial phase lead is introduced by this method. A successful load alleviation was achieved up to reduced frequencies of k=0.192.

Aerodynamic performance of aircraft wings vary with flight path conditions and depend on efficiency of high lift systems. In this work, a study on high lift devices and mechanisms that aim to increase maximum lift coefficient and reduce drag on commercial aircraft wings is discussed. Typically, such extensions are provided to main airfoil along span wise direction of wing and can increase lift coefficient by more than 100% during operation. Increasing the no of trailing edge flaps in chord wise direction could result in 100% increment in lift coefficient at a given angle of attack but leading edge slats improve lift by delaying the flow separation near stall angle of attack. Different combinations of trailing edge flaps used by Airbus, Boeing and McDonnel Douglas manufacturers are explained along with kinematic mechanisms to deploy them. The surface pressure distribution for 30P30N airfoil is evaluated using 2D vortex panel method and effects of chord wise boundary layer flow transitions on aerodynamic lift generation is discussed. The results showed better agreements with experiment data for high Reynolds number (9 million) flow conditions near stall angle of attack.
