AbstractPeople often reject new information, especially when it does not fit their prior beliefs. But do publics in advanced democracies reject information from public and private media outlets in the same way? We examine this question in the form of the media’s pro-government bias in the under-examined case of Japan. By combining unique textual data with an original survey experiment, we document that (1) people generally tend to reject pro-government biased information that overly praises government actions; but (2) the reasons why people reject the same biased information vary—based on their expectations of neutrality for public media, and on expectations derived from political ideology for private media. Our study suggests that the basis of people’s motivated reasoning differs when they evaluate content from public and private media.

In recent ten years, artificial bee colony (ABC) has attracted more and more attention, and many state-of-the-art ABC variants (ABCs) have been developed by introducing different biased information to the search equations. However, the same biased information is employed in employed bee and onlooker bee phases, which will cause over exploitation and lead to premature convergence. To overcome this limit, an effective framework with tristage adaptive biased learning is proposed for existing ABCs (TABL + ABCs). In TABL + ABCs, the search direction in the employed bee stage is guided by learning the ranking biased information of the parent food sources, while in the onlooker bee stage, the search direction is determined by extracting the biased information of population distribution. Moreover, a deletion-restart learning strategy is designed in scout bee stage to prevent the potential risk of population stagnation. Systematic experiment results conducted on CEC2014 competition benchmark suite show that proposed TABL + ABCs perform better than recently published AEL + ABCs and ACoS + ABCs.

Science doubt, resistance, and denial have been amplified in the digital society. There is a previously unimaginable range of information available, and most people can no longer imagine life otherwise. When one is curious about something, one turns to the internet. But how does one know what to believe and what is truthful? In Chapter 2, “How Do We Make Sense of Science Claims Online?,” the authors argue that most people are ill-equipped to engage in the critical reflection that would help them evaluate conflicting claims and biased information or to recognize agendas that may lead to distorted or one-sided presentations. The echo chamber of the internet raises additional concerns. As individuals seek out information, they often turn to familiar sources and the opinions of like-minded individuals. In an age of social media, they see Facebook postings and tweets of friends who share a worldview—and often drop the feeds of those who do not. The authors draw on their own research and that of others to describe these growing concerns and offer suggestions to inividuals, educators, communicators, and policy makers for improving critical evaluation of scientific information found online.

This paper aims to identify the drivers of management reporting choices in a setting characterized by ownership concentration and weak enforcement. Previous research indicates, that tone of the letter to shareholders is correlated with performance. However, tone can be biased towards the positive when a company is highly responsive to stock market incentives or controlled by majority investors. Bias can be reduced by the monitoring activities of institutional investors in closely held companies. There are two major implications of the study. First, when managers bias the text, they lose the ability to communicate positive news about their company. Under rational expectations investors can detect bias based on known situational incentives and disregard the biased information. Second, the results suggest that managers manipulate tone strategically, rather than unconsciously, to satisfy the needs of key shareholder groups.

Meta search engines allow multiple engine searches to minimize biased information and improve the quality of the results it generates. However, existing meta engine applications contain many foreign language results, and only run on Windows platform. The meta search engine we develop will resolve these problems. Our search engine will run on both Windows and Linus platforms, and has some desirable properties: 1) users can shorten the search waiting time if one of the search engines is down 2) users can sort the result titles in an alphabetic or relevancy order. Current meta search websites only allow users to sort results by relevancy. Our search engine allows users to do an alphabetical search from the previous relevancy search result, so that the users can identify the required title within a shorter time frame.
