Basic Cardiac Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation (BCLS+AED) refers to the skills required in resuscitating cardiac arrest casualties. On recognising cardiac arrest, the rescuer should call for ‘995’ for Emergency Ambulance and immediately initiate chest compressions. Good-quality chest compressions are performed with arms extended, elbows locked, shoulders directly perpendicular over the casualty’s chest, and the heel of the palm placed on the lower half of the sternum. The rescuer compresses hard and fast at 4–6 cm depth for adults at a compression rate of 100–120 per minute, with complete chest recoil after each compression. Two quick ventilations of 400–600 mL each can be delivered via a bag-valve-mask after every 30 chest compressions. Alternatively, a trained, able and willing rescuer can provide mouth-to-mouth ventilation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be stopped only when the casualty wakes up, the emergency team takes over care, or when an automated external defibrillator prompts for heart rhythm analysis or delivery of a shock.

Objectives: This is a first-of-its-kind cross-country collaboration between medical students from Singapore and Vietnam in conducting a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshop for Vietnamese high school students. Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of CPR training in improving students’ knowledge and attitudes towards CPR. Methods: The CPR workshop was conducted using active learning methods, including interactive lecture session, games, small group demonstration and hands-on practice on the mannequin. Knowledge and attitudes towards CPR were studied using a standardised questionnaire administered at three time points: before the workshop (TP1), immediately after the workshop (TP2) and three months after the workshop (TP3). Results: There was an improvement in the median knowledge score from 6.5/14 at TP1 to 13/14 at TP2 ( p<0.001) which was sustained at TP3 (10/14). Willingness and confidence in performing CPR on strangers increased from TP1 to TP2. From TP2 to TP3, however, there was a decrease in willingness to perform CPR on all groups, though confidence in performing CPR remained high at TP3. The most-cited concern about performing CPR was a lack of skills and knowledge. Most participants picked formal training courses to increase confidence in performing CPR. Conclusions: The CPR training was effective in improving the knowledge and attitudes of high school students towards CPR. Our study supports expanding this workshop to train more students in basic cardiac life support in the community and further collaboration internationally between medical schools in order to increase the number of students in the community competent in performing CPR.

Over the last decade, YouTube has become one of the largest online resources for medical information. However, uploaded videos are published without any peer review or quality control, so incorrect and incomplete information can be easily disseminated via the virtual platform and can be perceived as correct. The YouTube website was searched for videos in English uploaded between 15 October 2015 and 21 October 2016 using the following keywords: “CPR,” “cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” and “basic life support.” This study had a cross-sectional analytical design. In the first evaluation, the accuracy of the videos was checked according to the information contained in the basic cardiac life support algorithm. In the second evaluation, we assessed whether advanced-level, innovative medical information was included in these videos; when included, the accuracy of such information was checked. Of 774 videos evaluated, 92 videos were included in the study after application of the exclusion criteria. The videos were scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 20 points. The mean total score, based on all criteria, was 4.79 ± 2.88. The highest mean total score was achieved by videos uploaded by official medical organizations (6.43 ± 3.57), followed by those uploaded by health professionals and organizations (4.25 ± 2.49), and those uploaded by unidentified sources. YouTube videos are insufficient in providing information about the basic life support algorithm and advanced-level information according to the 2015 AHA resuscitation guidelines for health professionals. The educational material published by health institutions that are constantly working in the area is a more reliable source of information on subjects that directly affect human life, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
