Cottonwood is one of the local commodities that have been cultivated by the community. This is interesting in the selection of kapok as a symbol of Pasuruan Regency which shows one of the main examples and economic support for the community. Kapok Pasuruan production contributed 29.8% of the total production of East Java, namely 25.288 tons. The increasing presence of synthetic fibers drives demand for fiber from kapok cottonwood so farmers are reluctant to increase cottonwood trees more intensively and do not need to cut down to replace other commodities. This if left unchecked will further decrease, kapok production and extinction can occur. This study aims to identified internal and external factors in kapok agribusiness and develop alternative development strategies using the SWOT method. The results showed that several strategies S-O, W-O, S-T and W-T.

Fremont cottonwood is a large and tall tree native to riparian areas in the southwestern United States. It grows along streams, rivers, and wetlands and serves many ecological and socioeconomic functions. In recent years, we observed a severe decline of Fremont cottonwood trees in California. Trees showed branches dying back, with dark-brown internal discoloration and decay of the wood of twigs, branches, or trunks. Eventually, the cambium and the bark were killed, causing a canker. The fungus Cryptosphaeria pullmanensis was isolated consistently from the necrotic wood of branches and twigs. On rare occasion, C. multicontinentalis was also isolated from symptomatic wood. Therefore, we investigated the pathogenicity in Fremont cottonwood of C. pullmanensis and C. multicontinentalis. Koch’s postulates were completed in saplings and both species appeared highly virulent, producing internal necrosis and staining of the wood. This study is the first to report Cryptosphaeria dieback of Populus fremontii caused by C. pullmanensis and C. multicontinentalis. Symptoms and signs of this new disease are described and illustrated.

Kapok tree is used as an antidote for post-birth mother and for the treatment of deep wounds. Based benefit cottonwood tree researchers interested in knowing the content of the active compounds in the leaves of cottonwood with an experimental method for identifying active compounds. The method used is an experiment to identify active compounds what is contained in the leaves of cottonwood trees. Research conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya assay ethanol -soluble extract the same method as the determination of water content i.e. gravimetric method. The solvent used is 95 % ethanol, and then evaporated. Methods used in the determination of cider levels equal to the determination of levels of sari that is soluble in water that is a method of gravimetric. The solvent used for the solution penyari i.e. 95% ethanol is then evaporated over a water bath until dry and heated in an oven with a temperature of 1050 C to constant weight. Levels of ethanol -soluble extract obtained results, namely 4.8 % Test results can Fitokomia in tannin (fe Cltambah egg albumin) negative, positive drgendroff alkoloid, Alkaloids meyer negative, negative Alkoloid Bouchardat, saponin HHCL2N positive, negative Flavonoides and steroids and Terp Steroid and Terpenoid (acetate acid concentrated sulfuric acid anhidtrat positive.

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to evaluate preemergence herbicides for control of black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) in nursery containers. In 2006, granular preemergence herbicides were applied to recently filled, weed-free containers in May just prior to seed release from mature cottonwood trees. Flumioxazin provided the most effective cottonwood control, although control with isoxaben + trifluralin, oxyfluorfen + oryzalin, and pendimethalin was also effective. In 2007, containers were filled February 15, and herbicides were applied to separate groups of containers on February 22, March 14, April 16, and May 15. Containers were over-seeded with cottonwood for a 2-week period starting on May 16. Control with most herbicides improved as the date of application neared the date of seeding. Flumioxazin provided the most effective control throughout the experiment, but control from it also improved as the date of application neared the time of seeding.
