Satellite Retrieval of Microwave Land Surface Emissivity under Clear and Cloudy Skies in China Using Observations from AMSR-E and MODIS

Microwave land surface emissivity (MLSE) is an important geophysical parameter to determine the microwave radiative transfer over land and has broad applications in satellite remote sensing of atmospheric parameters (e.g., precipitation, cloud properties), land surface parameters (e.g., soil moisture, vegetation properties), and the parameters of interactions between atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystem (e.g., evapotranspiration rate, gross primary production rate). In this study, MLSE in China under both clear and cloudy sky conditions was retrieved using satellite passive microwave measurements from Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E), combined with visible/infrared observations from Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmosphere reanalysis dataset of ERA-20C. Attenuations from atmospheric oxygen and water vapor, as well as the emissions and scatterings from cloud particles are taken into account using a microwave radiation transfer model to do atmosphere corrections. All cloud parameters needed are derived from MODIS visible and infrared instantaneous measurements. Ancillary surface skin temperature as well as atmospheric temperature-humidity profiles are collected from ECMWF reanalysis data. Quality control and sensitivity analyses were conducted for the input variables of surface skin temperature, air temperature, and atmospheric humidity. The ground-based validations show acceptable biases of primary input parameters (skin temperature, 2 m air temperature, near surface relative humidity, rain flag) for retrieving using. The subsequent sensitivity tests suggest that 10 K bias of skin temperature or observed brightness temperature may result in a 4% (~0.04) or 7% (0.07) retrieving error in MLSE at 23.5 GHz. A nonlinear sensitivity in the same magnitude is found for air temperature perturbation, while the sensitivity is less than 1% for 300 g/m2 error in cloud water path. Results show that our algorithm can successfully retrieve MLSE over 90% of the satellite detected land surface area in a typical cloudy day (cloud fraction of 64%), which is considerably higher than that of the 29% area by the clear-sky only algorithms. The spatial distribution of MLSE in China is highly dependent on the land surface types and topography. The retrieved MLSE is assessed by compared with other existing clear-sky AMSR-E emissivity products and the vegetation optical depth (VOD) product. Overall, high consistencies are shown for the MLSE retrieved in this study with other AMSR-E emissivity products across China though noticeable discrepancies are observed in Tibetan Plateau and Qinling-Taihang Mountains due to different sources of input skin temperature. In addition, the retrieved MLSE exhibits strong positive correlations in spatial patterns with microwave vegetation optical depth reported in the literature.

Diurnal Cycle of Passive Microwave Brightness Temperatures over Land at a Global Scale

Satellite-borne passive microwave radiometers provide brightness temperature (TB) measurements in a large spectral range which includes a number of frequency channels and generally two polarizations: horizontal and vertical. These TBs are widely used to retrieve several atmospheric and surface variables and parameters such as precipitation, soil moisture, water vapor, air temperature profile, and land surface emissivity. Since TBs are measured at different microwave frequencies with various instruments and at various incidence angles, spatial resolutions, and radiometric characteristics, a mere direct integration of them from different microwave sensors would not necessarily provide consistency. However, when appropriately harmonized, they can provide a complete dataset to estimate the diurnal cycle. This study first constructs the diurnal cycle of land TBs using the non-sun-synchronous Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) observations by utilizing a cubic spline fit. The acquisition times of GMI vary from day to day and, therefore, the shape (amplitude and phase) of the diurnal cycle for each month is obtained by merging several days of measurements. This diurnal pattern is used as a point of reference when intercalibrated TBs from other passive microwave sensors with daily fixed acquisition times (e.g., Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder, and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2) are used to modify and tune the monthly diurnal cycle to daily diurnal cycle at a global scale. Since the GMI does not cover polar regions, the proposed method estimates a consistent diurnal cycle of land TBs at global scale. Results show that the shape and peak of the constructed TB diurnal cycle is approximately similar to the diurnal cycle of land surface temperature. The diurnal brightness temperature range for different land cover types has also been explored using the derived diurnal cycle of TBs. In general, a large diurnal TB range of more than 15 K has been observed for the grassland, shrubland, and tundra land cover types, whereas it is less than 5K over forests. Furthermore, seasonal variations in the diurnal TB range for different land cover types show a more consistent result over the Southern Hemisphere than over the Northern Hemisphere. The calibrated TB diurnal cycle may then be used to consistently estimate the diurnal cycle of land surface emissivity. Moreover, since changes in land surface emissivity are related to moisture change and freeze–thaw (FT) transitions in high-latitude regions, the results of this study enhance temporal detection of FT state, particularly during the transition times when multiple FT changes may occur within a day.

Application of Geo-informatics Technology to Access the Surface Temperature Using LANDSAT 8 OLI/TIRS Satellite Data: A Case Study in Ampara District in Sri Lanka

Land Surface Temperature is a one of the key variable of Global climate changes and model which estimate radiating budget in heat balance as control of climate model. It is a major influenced factor by the ability of the surface emissivity. In this study, were used Landsat 8 satellite image that have Operational Land Imager and Thermal Infrared Sensor to calculate Land Surface Temperature through geospatial technology over Ampara district, Sri Lanka. The Land Surface Temperature was estimated with respect to Land Surface Emissivity and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index values determined from the Red and Near Infrared channels. Land Surface Emissivity was processed directly by the thermal Infrared bands. Pixels based calculation were used to effort at LANDSAT 8 images that thermal Band 10 various dates in this study. The results were achievable to compute Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Land Surface Emissivity, and Land Surface Temperature with applicable manner to compare with land use/ land cover data. It determines and predicts the changes of surface temperature to favorable to decision making process for the society. Study area faces seasonal drought in Sri Lanka, the prediction method that how land can be efficiently used with the present condition. Therefore, the Land Surface Temperature estimation can prove whether new irrigation systems for agricultural activities or can transformed source of energy into useful form that introducing solar hubs for energy production in future.

DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A NEW PASSIVE MICROWAVE BASED SOIL MOISTURE INDEX

Knowledge on the spatial-temporal variation of soil moisture is essential to many hydrometeorology applications. In this study, we proposed a new soil moisture index (SMI) from passive microwave observations, aiming to capture the soil moisture variability. The new SMI is developed based on the underlying physical basis that vegetation and surface roughness exert similar effects on the variation of land surface emissivity and microwave polarization difference radio (MPDI), but they act in an opposite way compared with soil moisture. Hence, we can obtain the SMI value in a two-dimensional space by combining use of land surface emissivity and MPDI to isolate the contribution of soil moisture and that of vegetation and surface roughness. We calculated the SMI by using the L-band SMAP Level-3 datasets and validated it with five well calibrated and dense soil moisture networks and also compared it with SMAP and ESA CCI soil moisture products. The results show the SMI exhibits the highest R (0.87) and lowest RMSE (0.028 m3 m−3) value after removing the systematic bias by using the cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching technique among the satellite products during the whole study period, thus demonstrating its good capability of tracking the temporal variation of soil moisture and its potential usage in various hydrometeorology applications.

Estimation of Vegetation Proportion Cover to Improve Land Surface Emissivity

<p>Precise estimation of land surface emissivity (LSE) is essential to predict land surface energy budgets and land surface temperature, as LSE is an indicator of material composition. There exist several approaches to LSE estimation employing remote sensing data; however, the prediction of LSE remains a challenging task. Among the existing approaches for calculating LSE, the NDVI threshold method appears to hold well over vegetated areas. To apply the NDVI threshold method, it is necessary to know the proportion of vegetation cover (Pv). This research aims to investigate the impact of Pv's prediction accuracy on the estimation of LSE over the forest ecosystem. In this regard, a field campaign coinciding with a Landsat-8 overpass was undertaken for the mixed temperate forest of the Bavarian Forest National Park, in southeastern Germany. The Pv in situ measurements were made for 37 plots. Four vegetation indices, namely NDVI, variable atmospherically resistant index, wide dynamic range vegetation index, and three-band gradient difference vegetation index, were applied to predict Pv for further use in LSE computing. Unlike previous studies that suggested variable atmospherically resistant index can be estimated Pv with higher prediction accuracy compared to NDVI over the agricultural area, our results showed that the prediction accuracy of Pv is not different when using NDVI over the forest (R<sup>2</sup><sub>CV </sub>= 0.42, RMSE<sub>CV </sub>= 0.06). Pv was measured with the lowest accuracy using the wide dynamic range vegetation index (R<sup>2</sup><sub>CV </sub>= 0.014, RMSE<sub>CV </sub>= 0.197) and three-band gradient difference vegetation index (R<sup>2</sup><sub>CV </sub>= 0.032, RMSE<sub>CV </sub>= 0.018).  The results of this study also revealed that the variation in the prediction accuracy of the Pv has an impact on the results of LSE calculation.</p>
