Application of Blended Learning through Practical Project-based Instruction: Opportunities and Constraints

The aim of this paper is to highlight the application of BL (Blended Learning) in practical courses in the architecture program in COVID-19 time. Physical Environment course is a theoretical module in the first year of the undergraduate architecture program. Despite the course write in the theoretical structure, it was proposed to reorient the course into mixed methods with practical activities through online researching, site visiting, and reporting. The methodology was designed in a qualitative method with the application of case study, structured observation, content analysis, graphical analysis, and interpretation techniques. Data were combined from 40 students who were divided into 10 groups of 4 students to discover the application of BL in a practical and project-based activity. The findings of the research identified that the students face limitation to access the research engines and scientific sources to collect the sources for exercises. A half part of the group did plagiarism in the citation and referencing of the reports. The students present more accurate data in the site visiting and practical activities than the theoretical part. In conclusion, the application of BL requires sufficient infrastructure for access to online materials through institutions. Application of practical BL helps the students to personalize and specialize the learning process through their own design of the report and exercises that more effective for delivery of course. Despite the BL implements just in the activity and course levels by staff and students, BL mode requires to set up in both program and institutional levels to achieve the results.

Analysis of Key Technologies in the Design of Small and Medium Span Basket Type Steel Box Tied Arch Bridge

Explorations In Collections Care: Martin And Osa Johnson Glass Negatives In The Permanent Collection At The George Eastman House

This paper discusses a professional practical project that dealt with the collections care undertaken for one instance of found-in-collections material. Consisting of 336 four-by-five and five-by-seven gelatin glass plate negatives by American travel and wildlife filmmakers Martin and Osa Johnson, the material had been cared for in the vaults of the permanent collection at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film for many years without the establishment of official acquisition or public accessibility. The project discussed in this paper involved the trajectory of care required to make the Johnson material available, including provenance research, official acquisition, registration documentation, cataloguing, and housing improvements. The paper discusses this process, analyzing decisions made from issues of arrangement to culturally-sensitive description in associated cataloguing records. Finally, this paper suggests avenues for potential use of the Johnson material, arguing for the possibilities afforded by accessibility.

Although photographic jewellery has been around for over a century, there currently is no standard guide or controlled vocabulary with which to catalogue such items. Twenty-one institutions and private collectors were contacted in regards to their current cataloguing structure. Using their information, alongside museum registration methods and pre-existing regulations, a guide and vocabulary list has been created and can be implemented on current and future photographic jewellery collections. The accompanying essay takes into account the history, uses, and preservation concerns of photographic jewellery. The research, observations, and conclusions are derived from the collection within the Art Gallery of Ontario, the publications listed within the Literature Survey, and from numerous research sources in order to provide a resource for those interested in the subject of photographic jewellery, and the necessity of cataloguing them. Describing uncatalogued photographs in nineteenth century albums : a practical project in collections management.

This essay documents and justifies a practical project in collections management, in which I surveyed ten albums of photographs and recorded information about them, using a system of my own devising. The descriptive tables included here serve as a finding aid for the contents of albums that are not catalogued at the unit level, offers quick comparison among the albums, and efficiently assembles necessary information for unit-level cataloguing. It also demonstrates a model approach to pre-cataloguing surveys, especially when a particular genre is being studied in more than one album. A system such as this, customized for a specific category or genre of photograph, can provide researchers with thorough and appropriate information specific to their needs. This project deals specifically with the genre of photographic reproductions of works of art, found in ten nineteenth century albums of travels to Italy in the collection of George Eastman House.

British Official First World War Photographs, 1916-1918: Arranging and Contextualizing a Collection of Prints at the Art Gallery of Ontario

This thesis approaches a body of 520 British official First World War photographs in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario, to ask how access to this material can be enhanced. The practical project involves physically arranging the works as well as improving their catalogue records. Additionally, this thesis examines the social and political causes for wartime censorship, leading to the appointment of “official” photographers. It compares the work of Britain’s two most prolific First World War photographers to illustrate the benefits of physically arranging historical photographs by maker and to understand their individual approaches to capturing subjects of war.

Adapting to born-digital photographs: a case study of the Canadian Centre for Architecture

As born-digital photography collections grow, so grows the need for a more defined set of guidelines on the best practices of how to acquire, describe and preserve said photographs. This paper is the result of a practical project conducted at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. The project uses the CCA as a case study and asks the question: how is the Centre adapting to the collection of born-digital photographs? During a six-month residency, the author, developed and implemented a description guideline, workflow, and donor guideline for the collection and cataloguing of born-digital photographs. These guidelines are the result of the steady growth in the volume of born-digital photographs coupled with the need for ensuring long term preservation for existing and potential collections. The aim of this paper is to help improve the usefulness and clarity of the guidelines. The case study and paper was conducted in conjunction with the requirements of Film and Photography Preservation and Collections Management (FPPCM) master’s at Ryerson University. The title of the guideline is Guidelines for Describing Born-Digital Photograph.
