Tangrams: a simple visual tool for communicating the complexities of professionalism

Professionalism is vital for high quality healthcare and fundamental to health profession education. It is however complex, hard to define and can be challenging to teach, learn about and assess. We describe the development and use of an innovative visual tool, using a tangram analogy, to introduce and explore core professionalism concepts, which are often troublesome for both learners and educators. These include the hidden curriculum, capability, professional identity and the difference between unprofessionalism and high professional standards. Understanding these concepts can help individuals to see professionalism differently, encourage faculty to design professionalism programmes which focus on professional excellence, support assessors to feel more confident in identifying and addressing underperformance and facilitate learners to appreciate the complexity and uncertainty inherent in professionalism and to become more alert to the hidden curriculum and its potential impact. We have used the tangram model to educate for professionalism in multiple contexts with learners and educators. Participants regularly report that it leads to a deeper understanding and important new insights around professionalism and helps them identify ways of changing their practice. We believe this approach has relevance across the health professions and suggest ways it could be further developed to explore wider professionalism issues such as reflective practice, resilience and teamworking.

Relativistic velocity addition from the geometry of momentum space

With the goal of developing didactic tools, we consider the geometrization of the addition of velocities in special relativity by using Minkowski diagrams in momentum space. For the case of collinear velocities, we describe two ruler-and-compass constructions that provide simple graphical solutions working with the mass-shell hyperbola in a 1+1-dimensional energy-momentum plane. In the spirit of dimensional scaffolding, we use those results to build a generalization in 1+2 dimensions for the case of non-collinear velocities, providing in particular a graphical illustration of how the velocity transverse to a boost changes while the momentum remains fixed. We supplement the discussion with a number of interactive applets that implement the diagrammatic constructions and constitute a visual tool that should be useful for students to improve their understanding of the subtleties of special relativity.

When words become difficult: a critical reflection of the ‘MeBox’ method in understanding senior travellers’ responses to loss

Multiple dimensions of our experiences such as visual, embodied and sensory experiences cannot always be easily expressed in words. Traditional qualitative methods may struggle to access these deep-rooted complex and emotional aspects. Tourism scholars have called for innovative methodologies to unravel layers of diverse meaning in phenomena. This article critically reflects on a visual tool called the ‘MeBox’. It was adopted in our study to explore senior travellers’ responses to loss following a major life event. The ‘MeBox’ method enabled participants to express embedded and tacit knowledge to reflect on their lived experiences. We critically review the ‘MeBox’ methodology, and provide practical learnings for scholars who may want to adopt this method as a means to understand lived experiences that are difficult to express in words.

Proposal for a Dance Performance

Proposal for a Dance Performance is an artwork for music ensemble and PowerPoint. This work aims to transform -through the use of self-referential narration- dance notation, emails, program notes and technical rides, into performing instances. The paper puts the above artwork in a dialogue with works by Hanns Eisler, Alfred Johannes and Johannes Kreidler, which use music notation as a conceptual visual tool. Furthermore, this paper discusses the role of music as a character in a play, a technique found in Samuel Becket’s work. This combination of narration and notation is being proposed as a transdisciplinary methodology for breaking fixed notions of artistic practice.

Ultrasound for Preoperatively Predicting Pathology Grade, Complete Cytoreduction Possibility, and Survival Outcomes of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei

ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the value of using ultrasound (US) preoperatively for predicting pathological classification, complete cytoreduction possibility, and survival rate of patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP).MethodsWe retrospectively studied PMP patients who were scheduled for cytoreductive surgery between May 2009 and October 2019. US examination was performed before surgery. Factors related to high-grade pathology and poor completeness of cytoreduction (CC) score were identified. Associations between ultrasound characteristics and the survival status were also examined to identify independent predictive factors.ResultsPMP patients with clear ascites, abdominal lymph nodes, omental cake, abdominal mass, portal infiltration, and mesenteric involvement visible on US were considered to have high-grade pathology. Various US features were shown to be independent prognostic markers for inadequate cytoreduction in PMP patients. Portal infiltration and mesenteric involvement were significant prognostic factors for lower survival rates (hazard ratio = 3.092, 3.932, respectively). A visual nomogram including these factors was constructed to predict survival rates. The consistency index was 0.777, which reflected relatively high accuracy.ConclusionsPreoperative US has the potential to predict pathological grade and resectability of PMP. Portal infiltration and mesenteric involvement were independent predictors of poor clinical outcomes in PMP patients. Furthermore, a simple-to-use nomogram derived from our study data may be a helpful visual tool in clinical practice to predict 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates for PMP patients.
