This study aimed to explore whether there was an effect on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) visual acuity assessment from the oblique effect or the stimulus orientation. SSVEPs were induced by seven visual stimuli, e.g., the reversal sinusoidal gratings with horizontal, two oblique, and vertical orientations, reversal checkerboards with vertical and oblique orientations, and oscillating expansion-contraction concentric-rings, at six spatial frequency steps. Ten subjects participated in the experiment. Subsequently, a threshold estimation criterion was used to determine the objective SSVEP visual acuity corresponding to each visual stimulus. Taking the SSVEP amplitude and signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of the fundamental reversal frequency as signal characteristics, both the SSVEP amplitude and SNR induced by the reversal sinusoidal gratings at 3.0 cpd among four stimulus orientations had no significant difference, and the same finding was also shown in the checkerboards between vertical and oblique orientation. In addition, the SSVEP visual acuity obtained by the threshold estimation criterion for all seven visual stimuli showed no significant difference. This study demonstrated that the SSVEPs induced by all these seven visual stimuli had a similarly good performance in evaluating visual acuity, and the oblique effect or the stimulus orientation had little effect on SSVEP response as well as the SSVEP visual acuity.

AbstractA color-encoded single-shot computer-generated Moiré profilometry (CSCGMP) is proposed. Two sinusoidal gratings with a π phase difference are encoded in red and blue channels respectively to combine a composite color grating. While this composite color grating is projected onto the measured object, the corresponding color deformed pattern can be captured. So two deformed patterns with a π phase difference are separated from its red and blue components respectively. After normalization and subtraction, the AC component of both separated deformed patterns can be extracted. If this AC component respectively multiplied by the two AC components of fringe patterns of reference plane with a π/2 phase difference prepared and saved on the computer in advance, two computer-generated Moiré fringes just respectively standing for sine and cosine of phase which is modulated by the height of the object relative to the reference plane are figured out. So the 3D shape of the measured object can be reconstructed with normal computer-generated Moiré profilometry. Both simulation and experimental results show the feasibility and validity of the proposed method. It has potential in real-time 3D measurement due to its single-shot feature.

The perceived speed of a ring of equally spaced dots moving around a circular path appears faster as the number of dots increases (Ho & Anstis, 2013, Best Illusion of the Year contest). We measured this “spinner” effect with radial sinusoidal gratings, using a 2AFC procedure where participants selected the faster one between two briefly presented gratings of different spatial frequencies (SFs) rotating at various angular speeds. Compared with the reference stimulus with 4 c/rev (0.64 c/rad), participants consistently overestimated the angular speed for test stimuli of higher radial SFs but underestimated that for a test stimulus of lower radial SFs. The spinner effect increased in magnitude but saturated rapidly as the test radial SF increased. Similar effects were observed with translating linear sinusoidal gratings of different SFs. Our results support the idea that human speed perception is biased by temporal frequency, which physically goes up as SF increases when the speed is held constant. Hence, the more dots or lines, the greater the perceived speed when they are moving coherently in a defined area.

Reflection gratings in the off-plane mount have the potential to enhance the performance of future high resolution soft X-ray spectrometers. Diffraction efficiency can be optimized through the use of blazed grating facets, achieving high-throughput on one side of zero-order. This paper presents the results from a comparison between a grating with a sinusoidally grooved profile and two gratings that have been blazed. The results show that the blaze does increase throughput to one side of zero-order; however, the total throughput of the sinusoidal gratings is greater than the blazed gratings, suggesting the method of manufacturing the blazed gratings does not produce precise facets. The blazed gratings were also tested in their Littrow and anti-Littrow configurations to quantify diffraction efficiency sensitivity to rotations about the grating normal. Only a small difference in the energy at which efficiency is maximized between the Littrow and anti-Littrow configurations is seen with a small shift in peak efficiency towards higher energies in the anti-Littrow case. This is due to a decrease in the effective blaze angle in the anti-Littrow mounting. This is supported by PCGrate-SX V6.1 modeling carried out for each blazed grating which predicts similar response trends in the Littrow and anti-Littrow orientations.
