In recent years the system of higher education quality assurance has undergone several essential changes: a greater emphasis is being laid on the qualification framework, on student-centered learning and study results, the development of the teaching staff, active students’ participation in the assessment of the study process. The given study is oriented towards studying students’ opinions about the quality assurance of a study process at Daugavpils University (DU), Latvia. The participants of this study were 60 students from 12 master and doctoral study programs at Daugavpils University. The analysis of structured interviews with the students made it possible to identify the typical characteristic features of DU internal quality assessment. The research showed that students assess highly lecturers’ personal qualities (attitude to their profession, personal interest in students’ success, empathy, striving for cooperation) and their professional qualities (knowledge of the subject, didactic and communicative competence, and ability to get the feedback from students as well). To promote the cooperation between the students and the academic staff of DU, it is useful to practice trans-disciplinary out-of-study forms, which contribute to a deeper understanding of the study content, of topicalities in global education and possibilities of synergetic thinking in cooperation with students and lecturers. Keywords: quality assurance, higher education institution

Abstract Quality assurance in higher education, a major commitment of the current administration of the Brazilian Ministry of Education, is increasingly being placed on the agenda in most of the countries of the world. As this is a relatively new and highly controversial issue, a common strategy is to scrutinize the experience of others and adapt and adopt what seems to be of interest. The British quality assurance system, formulated by the Quality Assurance Agency (the QAA, created in 1997), is often cited for its comprehensiveness and sophistication. Besides promoting internal evaluation by the institutions of higher education themselves and its integration with external evaluation by the agency "Subject Review" and "Institutional Review"), the QAA has taken up the challenge of defining "reference points for quality". Through programmes such as the "National Qualifications Framework", "Subject Benchmarking" and "Programme Specification", the QAA intends to define, in an explicit and consensual way, the standards and demands to e met by students and institutions in different subjects and at different levels. From assessment of this experience, which is already at an advanced stage of execution, lessons are being learned to better integrate and strengthen the Brazilian system of quality assurance in higher education. Quality assurance and quality control is the foundation of any diagnostic test. The two laboratories in the United States that use HPLC to quantitate endophyte toxins in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) are Oregon State University (OSU) and University of Missouri (MU). Japan, the major importer of grass straw has six new laboratories that will test agricultural imports for endophyte toxins. A quality assurance program was set up between the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture and the State of Oregon. The latter includes both OSU and the MU. All units are using an accurate crystalline standard and have exchanged "check" samples among themselves. To date OSU and MU have values that differ by 10%. OSU has identified a contaminating and coeluting peak as the cause of the differences. Both laboratories are changing to a Gemini column to rectify the differences. Japanese laboratories are in the process of evaluating their split check samples. Keywords: quality assurance, quality control, endophyte, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass
