(1) Background: Chronic diseases affect patients’ quality of life. Age Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the most prevalent chronic ocular diseases. The study aims to measure the anxiety and quality of life related to vision in patients with AMD, as well as the relationship with other visual and demographic parameters. (2) Methods: Prospective cross-sectional study in AMD patients. Visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), line difference in the Colenbrander test, and the degree of pathology were measured. Other variables such as gender, age, and time from the diagnosis were also collected. Anxiety was measured with the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and quality of life with the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25). The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist was followed. (3) Results: Patients with higher punctuation in Trait STAI showed lower punctuation in NEI VFQ-25 questionnaire (Spearman coefficient −0.415; p = 0.001). The variables VA, CS, and age were correlated to the quality of life. The relationship between trait anxiety and subscales of NEI VFQ-25 was significant for all subscales (p < 0.05), except for social functioning, peripheral vision, general vision, ocular pain, and driving. (4) Conclusions: AMD patients with higher levels of anxiety show a decrease in their quality of life. The quality of life of AMD patients depends on their VA and CS.

The availability of large eye-movement corpora has become increasingly important over the past years. In scene viewing, scan-path analyses of time-ordered fixations, for example, allow for investigating individual differences in spatial correlations between fixation locations, or for predicting individual viewing behavior in the context of computational models. However, time-dependent analyses require many fixations per scene, and only few large eye-movement corpora are publicly available. This manuscript presents a new corpus with eye-movement data from two hundred participants. Viewers memorized or searched either color or grayscale scenes while high or low spatial frequencies were filtered in central or peripheral vision. Our database provides the scenes from the experiment with corresponding object annotations, preprocessed eye-movement data, and heatmaps and fixation clusters based on empirical fixation locations. Besides time-dependent analyses, the corpus data allow for investigating questions that have received little attention in scene-viewing research so far: (i) eye-movement behavior under different task instructions, (ii) the importance of color and spatial frequencies when performing these tasks, and (iii) the individual roles and interaction of central and peripheral vision during scene viewing. Furthermore, the corpus allows for validation of computational models of attention and eye-movement control, and finally, analyses on an object- or cluster-based level.

Background: Rod-Cone Dystrophies (RCDs) are characterized by the dominant clinical features of rods manifestation predominantly over the cones such as night blindness and peripheral vision worsening that leads to restricted activities of daily living. There are no medical or surgical treatments available for this disease. A combined approach of syntonic phototherapy along with the vision therapy may be a viable treatment option for the improvement in visual efficiency skills and visual function of RCD patients. Case Reports: Case 1: A female, aged 47 years old, diagnosed with severe RCD and complained of poor sight and difficulty in seeing at night in both eyes along with progressive diminution of vision for the past ten years. Case 2: A boy, 11 years of age, diagnosed with severe RCD and presented with major complaints of progressive vision loss, photophobia and falling short in school performance. Both patients were recommended for a combined treatment approach of syntonic phototherapy combined with vision therapy to be completed in our centre. Conclusion: These two patients showed significant improvement in visual acuity, oculomotor motility and visual field. Further research is recommended to enrich our understanding on the use of syntonic phototherapy along with vision therapy in managing patients with RCD which otherwise lacks in specific medical or surgical treatment.

Covert attention aids us in monitoring the environment and optimizing performance in visual tasks. Past behavioral studies have shown that covert attention can enhance spatial resolution. However, electroencephalography (EEG) activity related to neural processing between central and peripheral vision has not been systematically investigated. Here, we conducted an EEG study with 25 subjects who performed covert attentional tasks at different retinal eccentricities ranging from 0.75° to 13.90°, as well as tasks involving overt attention and no attention. EEG signals were recorded with a single stimulus frequency to evoke steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) for attention evaluation. We found that the SSVEP response in fixating at the attended location was generally negatively correlated with stimulus eccentricity as characterized by Euclidean distance or horizontal and vertical distance. Moreover, more pronounced characteristics of SSVEP analysis were also acquired in overt attention than in covert attention. Furthermore, offline classification of overt attention, covert attention, and no attention yielded an average accuracy of 91.42%. This work contributes to our understanding of the SSVEP representation of attention in humans and may also lead to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that allow people to communicate with choices simply by shifting their attention to them.

Wearing a facemask (FM) reduces the spread of COVID-19, but it also blocks a person's lower visual field. Many new public safety rules were created in response to COVID-19, including mandated FM wearing in some youth sports like youth ice hockey. We hypothesized that FM wearing in youth hockey players obstructs the lower field of view and may impact safety. Youth hockey players (n = 33) aged 12.03 (1.6) years button press when they saw an LED on the floor turn on in two conditions (wearing FM or no FM) in random order. An interleaved one-up/one-down two-alternative-forced-choice adaptive staircase design was used. Visual thresholds were calculated for each condition and participant. The visual angle threshold (VAT) was determined using standing eye height and the linear distance from the tip of the skates to the visual threshold. Paired t-tests determined whether mask wearing changed the VAT. We modeled the probability a player could see the puck on their stick in four distinct scenarios to estimate the potential impact of FM wearing during hockey play. The average unmasked VAT (11.4 degrees) was significantly closer to the skates than the masked VAT (20.3 degrees) (p &lt; 0.001). Our model indicated a significant reduction in ability to visualize the puck using peripheral vision when more upright while wearing a FM. FM wearing compromised their lower visual field, suggesting a downward head tilt may be necessary to see the puck. Playing ice hockey while wearing a FM may lead to unsafe on-ice playing conditions due to downward head tilt to see the puck.

AbstractVisual crowding is the disruptive effect of clutter on object recognition. Although most prominent in adult peripheral vision, crowding also disrupts foveal vision in typically-developing children and those with strabismic amblyopia. Do these crowding effects share the same mechanism? Here we exploit observations that crowded errors in peripheral vision are not random: target objects appear either averaged with the flankers (assimilation), or replaced by them (substitution). If amblyopic and developmental crowding share the same mechanism then their errors should be similarly systematic. We tested foveal vision in children aged 3-9 years with typical vision or strabismic amblyopia, and peripheral vision in adults. The perceptual effects of crowding were measured by requiring observers to adjust a reference stimulus to match the perceived orientation of a target ‘Vac-Man’ element. When the target was surrounded by flankers that differed by ±30°, adults and children reported orientations between the target and flankers (assimilation). Errors were reduced with ±90° differences, but primarily matched the flanker orientation (substitution) when they did occur. A population pooling model of crowding successfully simulated this pattern of errors in all three groups. We conclude that the perceptual effects of amblyopic and developing crowding are systematic and resemble the near periphery in adults, suggesting a common underlying mechanism.

Sector and pericentral are two rare, regional forms of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). While usually defined as stable or only very slowly progressing, the available literature to support this claim is limited. Additionally, few studies have analyzed the spectrum of disease within a particular genotype. We identified all cases (9 patients) with an autosomal dominant Rhodopsin variant previously associated with sector RP (RHO c.316G > A, p.Gly106Arg) at our institution. Clinical histories were reviewed, and testing included visual fields, multimodal imaging, and electroretinography. Patients demonstrated a broad phenotypic spectrum that spanned regional phenotypes from sector-like to pericentral RP, as well as generalized disease. We also present evidence of significant intrafamilial variability in regional phenotypes. Finally, we present the longest-reported follow-up for a patient with RHO-associated sector-like RP, showing progression from sectoral to pericentral disease over three decades. In the absence of comorbid macular disease, the long-term prognosis for central visual acuity is good. However, we found that significant progression of RHO p.Gly106Arg disease can occur over protracted periods, with impact on peripheral vision. Longitudinal widefield imaging and periodic ERG reassessment are likely to aid in monitoring disease progression.
