Silver nanofluid was prepared by bio-reduction reaction between orange peels extracts (OPE) and silver nitrate and characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Colloidal nanoparticles of sizes between 40 – 50 nm and spherical shape were obtained. The nanofluid was applied as anticorrosion additive to inhibit corrosion of X80 steel in simulated oilfield scale dissolver solution (1.0 M HCl) at various temperatures. The nanofluid (OPE-AgNPs) was 98.9 % and 84.3 % efficient at 30 ºC and 60 oC respectively as determined by weight loss measurement. In comparison with OPE, OPE-AgNPs shows better corrosion inhibition and higher resistance to thermal degradation. Some kinetic and thermodynamic models were used to characterize the inhibition process. OPE-AgNPs could be optimized and used as alternative anticorrosion additive for scale dissolution liquor in the industry.

The negative impacts of catastrophic fire and explosion accidents due to copper corrosion problems of oil-filled electrical transformers are still in the spotlight due to a lack of effective methods for early fault detection. To address this gap, a condition monitoring (CM) procedure that can detect such problems in the initial stage is proposed in this paper. The suggested CM procedure is based on identified measurable variables, which are the relevant by-products of the corrosion reaction, and utilizes an Early Fault Diagnosis (EFD) model to detect and solve the copper corrosion problems. The EFD model includes a fault trend chart that can track a fault progression during the useful life of transformers. The purpose of this paper is to verify and validate the effectiveness of the suggested CM procedure by an empirical study in a power plant. The result of applying this procedure was early detection of copper corrosion problems in two transformers with suspected copper corrosion propagation from a total of 84. The corrective action was adding an optimized amount of a passivator, an anticorrosion additive, to suppress the corrosion reaction at the correct time. The main conclusion of this study is the importance of early detection of transformer faults to avoid the negative impacts on societal, company, and individual levels.

AbstractAn alternative green approach through which nanoscience/nanotechnology could be applied in the industry is being demonstrated in this study. Ethanol extracts of Allium cepa peels (Et-ACPE) is used to mediate the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Et-AgNPs) at room temperature. Stable crystalline, monodisperse and non-agglomerated spherical NPs with zeta potential of −46.2 ± 0.1 mV and plasmon absorption at 435 nm are obtained. Silver atoms are predominantly oriented towards the Ag (111) plane in a face centered cubic structure with a = b = c = 4.0968 Å having $$\alpha = \beta = \gamma = 90^\circ$$ α = β = γ = 90 ∘ . The surfaces of the NPs becomes rich in electron cloud due to O atoms supplied by capped phyto-compounds of Et-ACPE. This enhances adsorption potential and more efficient inhibition (up to 90% at 30 °C) of X80 steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution than using the crude extract. Investigation of corrosion products and morphologies of the steel surface by FTIR, SEM/EDS and AFM techniques reveals efficient surface protection through adsorption of Et-AgNPs facilitated mainly by O and –C = C– sites. Findings prove that the Et-AgNPs is a more efficient and thermally stable alternative ecofriendly anticorrosion additive for industrial cleaning and pickling operations than the crude extract.
