This paper investigates the power resource optimization problem for a new cognitive radio framework with a symbiotic backscatter-aided full-duplex secondary link under imperfect interference cancellation and other hardware impairments. The problem is formulated using two approaches, namely, maximization of the sum rate and maximization of the primary link rate, subject to rate constraints on the secondary link, and the solution for each approach is derived. The problem of a half-duplex secondary link is also solved. Simulation results show that the sum rate and exploitation of the full-duplex capability of the secondary link are strongly affected by both the problem objective and hardware impairments.

Abstract The performance of a relay based Half-Duplex (HD) and Full-Duplex (FD) cooperative cognitive radio (CR) network with a RF energy harvesting (EH) is studied in this paper. Co-operative environment includes a network with multiple primary users (PUs), and CRs. The relay node is considered as an EH node which harvests energy (HE) from RF signal (RFS) of source and loop-back interference. The network performance is studied for instantaneous transmission and delay constraint transmission for decode and forward (DF) relaying protocol. The performance is investigated under a relay energy outage constraint and the expression of throughput is redesigned. Expressions of energy outage, data outage and throughput for HD and FD are developed. The impact of several parameters such as transmitting SNR, fractional harvesting time parameter, fractional transmission time parameter, and loop-back interference on the system throughput has been investigated.

Before each user equipment (UE) can send data using the narrowband physical uplink shared channel (NPUSCH), each UE should periodically monitor a search space in the narrowband physical downlink control channel (NPDCCH) to decode a downlink control indicator (DCI) over narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT). This monitoring period, called the NPDCCH period in NB-IoT, can be flexibly adjusted for UEs with different channel qualities. However, because low-cost NB-IoT UEs operate in the half-duplex mode, they cannot monitor search spaces in NPDCCHs and transmit data in the NPUSCH simultaneously. Thus, as we observed, a percentage of uplink subframes will be wasted when UEs monitor search spaces in NPDCCHs, and the wasted percentage is higher when the monitored period is shorter. In this paper, to address this issue, we formulate the cross-cycled resource allocation problem to reduce the consumed subframes while satisfying the uplink data requirement of each UE. We then propose a cross-cycled uplink resource allocation algorithm to efficiently use the originally unusable NPUSCH subframes to increase resource utilization. Compared with the two resource allocation algorithms, the simulation results verify our motivation of using the cross-cycled radio resources to achieve massive connections over NB-IoT, especially for UEs with high channel qualities. The results also showcase the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, which can be flexibly applied for more different NPDCCH periods.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has drawn enormous attention from the research community as a promising technology for future wireless communications with increasing demands of capacity and throughput. Especially, in the light of fifth-generation (5G) communication where multiple internet-of-things (IoT) devices are connected, the application of NOMA to indoor wireless networks has become more interesting to study. In view of this, we investigate the NOMA technique in energy harvesting (EH) half-duplex (HD) decode-and-forward (DF) power-splitting relaying (PSR) networks over indoor scenarios which are characterized by log-normal fading channels. The system performance of such networks is evaluated in terms of outage probability (OP) and total throughput for delay-limited transmission mode whose expressions are derived herein. In general, we can see in details how different system parameters affect such networks thanks to the results from Monte Carlo simulations. For illustrating the accuracy of our analytical results, we plot them along with the theoretical ones for comparison.
