The literature review describes various methods for treating patients with lymphedema of the extremities. Statistics show an increase in the incidence and disability of patients with this pathology. However, the possibilities of therapeutic measures in lymphedema are far from perfect.The analysis of literature data showed that the basis of treatment for lymphedema of the extremities is comprehensive conservative therapy with the use of pathogenetically grounded physical, mechanical, and medical methods. In complex schemes of conservative treatment for lymphedema, physiotherapy methods occupy a prominent place. The most common technique among them is regular combined decongestive therapy. This method is recognized by leading experts as the main one in treating patients with lower extremity lymphedema. Commitment of patients to treatment and their social and psychological counseling are of great importance. The choice of the volume and method of surgical intervention requires a difficult and individual assessment of pathological changes developing throughout the course of the disease.Despite certain improvements in treatment methods, lower extremity lymphedema is still an unsolved issue. The experience of most specialists involved in lymphedema treatment demonstrates a reasonable balance between basic conservative and surgical treatment methods. Undoubtedly, results of evaluation of these methods will improve the choice of an optimal technique for treating patients with lymphedema of the extremities.

Abstract Background: The hemicraniectomy is a common technique used in a variety of pathologies including some traumatic brain injury and malignant stroke. A novel technique of performing hemicraniectomies using a retro-auricular incision can avoid transgressing the temporalis muscle and superficial temporal artery while providing adequate hemicranial exposure. Method: This technique was reproduced in a skull base lab using a cadaveric head. The key steps of this approach were illustrated in step-by-step fashion. A post-approach CT scan of the cadaver was performed to evaluate the decompression exposure. Results: This approach is able to provide sufficient middle fossa decompression and area of exposure, while preserving the temporalis along with the superficial temporal artery. Conclusions: The altered retro-auricular flap (the “Feng-Huang” flap) is a novel technique for hemicraniectomy which can provide sufficient middle fossa decompression and exposure while sparing the temporalis muscle and superficial temporal artery during the approach. A step-by-step technical illustration is demonstrated in the present note.

Objective: The health and comfort of the indoor population have been impacted by the humidity. While people are increasingly spending more time indoors, the presence of pollutants and lack of proper humidification in indoor air have significant risk factors that may lead to multiple health problems. Methods: By applying the right air purification and/or humidification system, the adverse effects of poor indoor air quality can be minimized. Direct steam addition is a common technique to humidify the indoor air of a building. Carbon dioxide or other acidic process contaminants may dissolve in steam or steam condensate that will consequently decrease the pH and make it corrosive for the steam distribution system. To avoid that, neutralizing amines are added to steam that keeps the pH neutral or slightly alkaline(pH 7.5-9.0). However, neutralizing amines have some toxic effects. OSHA, FDA, and NIOSH prescribe maximum concentration limits for them in indoor air. The Central Utility Plant (CUP) of National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses a 50:50 blend of cyclohexylamine and diethylaminoethanol as neutralizing agents for the steam. Results: The CUP at NIH presents the results of monitoring the concentration level of amines through mass balance, online monitoring at specified location of the steam distribution system and field measurement in humidified indoor air at buildings on campus. Conclusion Through theoretical calculation backed up by field measurement, the amine concentration of indoor air is determined to be well below the FDA regulated limits.

Abstract. Landslides are a frequent natural hazard occurring globally in regions with steep topography. Additionally, landslides are playing an important role in landscape evolution by transporting sediment downslope. Landslide inventory mapping is a common technique to assess the spatial distribution and extend of landslides in an area of interest. High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) have proven to be useful databases to map landslides in large areas across different land covers and topography. So far, Denmark had no national landslide inventory. Here we create the first comprehensive national landslide inventory for Denmark derived from a 40 cm resolution DEM from 2015 supported by several 12.5 cm resolution orthophotos. The landslide inventory is created based on a manual expert-based mapping approach, and we implemented a quality control mechanism to assess the completeness of the inventory. Overall, we mapped 3202 landslide polygons in Denmark with a level of completeness of 87 %. The landslide inventory can act as a starting point for a more comprehensive hazard and risk reduction framework for Denmark. Furthermore, machine-learning algorithms can use the dataset as a training dataset to improve future automated mapping approaches. Among all the additive manufacturing techniques, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LBPF), also called Selective Laser Melting (SLM), is the most common technique due to its high capability of building complex parts with generally improved mechanical properties. One of the main drawbacks of this technique is the sample size limitation, which depends on elaborating chamber dimensions. In this study, we investigate the viability of obtaining large parts with the laser welding of additive manufactured plates. A comparison of the microstructure and the tensile mechanical properties of SLM-welded plates and cold-rolled welded plates was performed. This paper shows the possibility of obtaining defect-free parts. Even if welding has a low impact on the microstructure of the SLM samples, fractures are located on the fusion zone, and a decrease in ductility of around 30% compared to the base metal is observed.

There are not many descriptions of the muscle morphology of marsupials, despite the fact that they should show diversity according to the adaptation and dispersal to a variety of environments. Most of the previous studies regarding the gross anatomy of marsupials were conducted in the 1800 - 1900’s, and many issues still remain that need to be reexamined. For instance, the muscle identification had been performed based only on their attachments and thus, muscle descriptions are often inconsistent among the studies. These classic studies often do not include figures or photographs, so the discrepancies in the descriptions of the muscles could only be verified by performing the muscle identification again with a more reliable method. This problem can be solved by performing muscle identification by innervation. This method, which focuses on the ontogenic origin of the muscle as opposed to the attachment site, is prone to individual and interspecies variation and is a common technique in recent anatomical research. This technique is more reliable than previous methods and is suitable for comparison with other taxa (i.e., eutherians). In this study, we first conducted muscle identification based on innervation in the gluteal and posterior thighs of koalas in order to reorganize the anatomical knowledge of marsupials. This is because the gluteus and posterior thighs of koalas are the areas where previous studies have been particularly inconsistent. We dissected five individual koalas and clarified discrepancies in previous studies, as well as investigated the unique muscle morphology and their function in koalas. Specifically, the koala's gluteal muscle group is suitable for abduction, while the posterior thigh muscles are particularly suitable for flexion. In the future, we will update the anatomical findings of marsupials in the same way to clarify the adaptive dissipation process of marsupials, as well as to contribute to the understanding of the evolutionary morphology of mammals.

This article gives key elements of automatic generation using the CAD/CAM process. CAD/CAM technique appears to be the most common technique currently available; this is fast, easy and maintains time. Abstract Introduction Bone-borne miniscrew assisted palatal expansion (MAPE) is a common technique to improve maxillary transverse deficiency in young adolescents. Adult patients usually present a challenge, as they often require additional surgical assisted maxillary expansion (SARPE). There is still no clear statement about non-surgical expansion in adult patients using this technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the success and complication rate of non-surgical palatal expansion in adults utilizing MAPE with a novel force-controlled polycyclic expansion protocol (FCPC). Methods This consecutive study consisted of 33 adult patients with an average age of 29.1 ± 10.2 years (min. 18 years, max. 58 years), including one dropout patient. First, four miniscrews were inserted and after 12-weeks latency, the expander was placed and the FCPC protocol was applied (MAPE group). In case of missing expansion, a SARPE was performed (SARPE group). After maximum expansion, a cone beam CT was made and widening of the midpalatal suture was measured. The outcome variables were successful non-surgical expansion and, with sample size power above 80%, the odds of failed non-surgical expansion and associated complications were evaluated. The primary predictor variable was age. Statistical analysis was performed using R (Version 3.1) to calculate power, to construct various models for measuring the odds of requiring surgical intervention/complications, and others. Results Successful non-surgical expansion was achieved in 27 patients (84.4%), ranging from 18 to 49 years. Mean age differed significantly between both groups (26.8 ± 8.2 years vs. 41.3 ± 9.9 years; p < 0.001). Mean expansion at the anterior and posterior palate for the MAPE group was 5.4 ± 1.5 mm and 2.5 ± 1.1 mm, respectively. Among these subjects’ complications were observed in 18.5%. Age significantly increased the odds of complications (p = 0.019). Conclusions 1. The success rate of MAPE among individuals aged 18 to 49 years was 84.4%. 2. A V-shaped expansion pattern in the antero-posterior dimension was mostly observed. 3. Complications were significantly associated with age. 4. A careful expansion protocol seems to be beneficial to prevent unfavorable results in adult patients. Trial registration Consecutive cohort study, Review Board No. EK-2-2014/0016.

Soil replacement is a common technique that can be used to increase the soil bearing capacity and reduce the expected settlement. The thickness of replacement layer depends on many factors such as: the applied stress, original soil properties, material of replacement layer and the cost of foundation works. However, until now the practical thickness of replacement is usually selected based on soil experts’ experience. This study proposed an optimization model to assist geotechnical engineers in predicting the optimum thickness and material type of replacement layer that satisfy the main design requirements, i.e. bearing capacity, consolidation settlement and cost considerations at the same time. The Evolutionary solving method that uses a variety of genetic algorithm and local search methods was used to solve the research problem. Furthermore, the effect of the thickness and properties of clay layer and the depth of ground water table on determining optimum type and thickness of replacement soil were investigated. The study evaluated the relationship between the replacement layer thickness and the total direct cost of foundation works and found that, the notion of increasing replacement thickness to decrease cost limitlessly was not viable and an optimal thickness was usually achieved.
