Abstract The present study reports on seasonal and spatial variations in diversity, distribution and abundance of dinoflegellates and indicates the presence of HAB species in Pakistan waters. A total of 179 taxa, recorded in this study from offshore and near-shore waters, belong to 41 genera in 26 families and 10 orders. The high species count (149 species) was recorded from Manora Island offshore station (MI-1) and 105 spp, 109 spp and 115 spp were encountered from the Mubarak village offshore station (MV-1), Manora near shore station (MI-2) and Mubarak Village near-shore station (MV-2) respectively. Tripos furca was the dominant and frequently occurring species (> 1 x103 to > 25 x103 cells L-1 from coastal and >1x 105 cells L-l from near-shore stations) in addition to less abundant Alexandrium catenella, Alexandrium sp., Alexandrium minutum, and Prorocentrum micans (>103 to 25x 103cells/L). Another 44 species occurred in relatively low numbers (<103 cell L-l). Seventy species were found throughout the study period at all four stations. High number of species in three genera (Tripos (38), Protoperidinium (34) and Prorocentrum (20) was recorded. Potently toxic (16 genera 43 species) and HAB related (19 genera and 30 species) dinoflagellate taxa were also recorded. The percent contribution of dinoflagellates in total phytoplankton population generally remained below 20% except for a few instances. Manora Island stations had comparatively higher Shannon index and equitability and slightly lower dominance index. The PCA plot showed strong positive correlation among chlorophyll-a concentration, dissolved oxygen, total number of phytoplankton and dinoflagellates.

Abstract. To understand the characteristics and changes of baseline ozone (O3) in oceanic air in eastern China, a 6-year measurement of O3 concentration was conducted from 1 January 2012 to 15 September 2017 at a remote offshore station located on Sheshan Island (SSI) near the megacity of Shanghai. The observed monthly mean O3 concentrations at SSI ranged from 33.4 to 61.4 ppbv during the study period, which were about 80 % and 12 % higher, respectively, than those measured at downtown and rural sites in Shanghai. Compared to the remarkable O3 increases observed at urban and rural sites in Shanghai, observed O3 concentrations at SSI exhibited statistically insignificant increasing changes (1.12 ppbv yr−1, α>0.10) during the observation period, suggesting less impacts of anthropogenic emissions on O3 levels in oceanic air. In addition, an insignificant decreasing change (−0.72 ppbv yr−1, α>0.10) was detected in O3 concentrations at SSI in September and October when the influence of regional transport was minimum throughout the year, providing a good proxy to study the baseline oxidation capacity of the oceanic atmosphere. City plumes from Shanghai usually carried higher levels of NOx, resulting in decreased O3 concentrations at SSI during southwesterly and westerly winds. However, In MAM (March–May) and JJA (June–August), due to the enhanced production of oxygenated volatile organic compounds, O3 could be continuously produced during daytime in aged city plumes, resulting in elevated O3 concentrations transported to SSI. The impacts of the offshore O3 on O3 levels in Shanghai are quantified during an easterly wind dominant episode (1–30 September 2014) using the WRF-Chem model (Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry). Sensitivity results suggest that O3 in the oceanic air inflows can lead to 20 %–30 % increases in urban O3 concentrations, which should be crucially considered in dealing with urban O3 pollution in large coastal cities like Shanghai.

This paper presents a preliminary evaluation of the acoustic impact of an offshore experimental wind farm (E2O), conceived and planned to be installed in Asturias on Spain’s northwest coast. A simplified assessment of the wind turbines’ noise impact at an offshore platform was performed numerically, adapting commercial software for room acoustics to this particular application. As a result, the sound levels at specific receiver sites on the coastline were estimated to select the most convenient level between the two possible locations. Parameters from acoustic emission data of the selected wind turbines were introduced as inputs to the simulation, and the noise propagation in the analyzed domains (for different values of their basic parameters) was simulated. Complementarily, the numerical results were compared to calculations following the ISO 9613-2 standard on sound propagation outdoors for validation purposes, showing good overall agreement. The results revealed that both projected areas under consideration follow the current normative concerning the prescribed acoustic limits, according to the predicted low sound pressure values at the specific considered receiver sites.

Innovation in materials and test protocols, as well as physical and numerical investigations, is required to address the technical challenges arising due to the novel application of components from conventional industries to the marine renewable energy (MRE) industry. Synthetic fibre ropes, widely used for offshore station-keeping, have potential application in the MRE industry to reduce peak mooring line loads. This paper presents the results of a physical characterisation study of a novel hybrid polyester-polyolefin rope for MRE mooring applications through a round robin testing (RRT) approach at two test facilities. The RRT was performed using standard guidelines for offshore mooring lines and the results are verified through the numerical modelling of the rope tensile behaviour. The physical testing provides quantifiable margins for the strength and stiffness properties of the hybrid rope, increases confidence in the test protocols and assesses facility-specific influences on test outcomes. The results indicate that the adopted guidance is suitable for rope testing in mooring applications and there is good agreement between stiffness characterisation at both facilities. Additionally, the numerical model provides a satisfactory prediction of the rope tensile behaviour and it can be used for further parametric studies.

AbstractBackgroundProkaryotes dominate the biosphere and regulate biogeochemical processes essential to all life. Yet, our knowledge about their biology is for the most part limited to the minority that has been successfully cultured. Molecular techniques now allow for obtaining genome sequences of uncultivated prokaryotic taxa, facilitating in-depth analyses that may ultimately improve our understanding of these key organisms.ResultsWe compared results from two culture-independent strategies for recovering bacterial genomes: single-amplified genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes. Single-amplified genomes were obtained from samples collected at an offshore station in the Baltic Sea Proper and compared to previously obtained metagenome-assembled genomes from a time series at the same station. Among 16 single-amplified genomes analyzed, seven were found to match metagenome-assembled genomes, affiliated with a diverse set of taxa. Notably, genome pairs between the two approaches were nearly identical (>98.7% identity) across overlapping regions (30-80% of each genome). Within matching pairs, the single-amplified genomes were consistently smaller and less complete, whereas the genetic functional profiles were maintained. For the metagenome-assembled genomes, only on average 3.6% of the bases were estimated to be missing from the genomes due to wrongly binned contigs; the metagenome assembly was found to cause incompleteness to a higher degree than the binning procedure.ConclusionsThe strong agreement between the single-amplified and metagenome-assembled genomes emphasizes that both methods generate accurate genome information from uncultivated bacteria. Importantly, this implies that the research questions and the available resources are allowed to determine the selection of genomics approach for microbiome studies.

The phytoplankton community structure and abundance in the south-eastern Black Sea was measured from February to December 2009 using and comparing high performance liquid chromatography pigment and microscopy analyses. The phytoplankton community was characterized by diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophores, as revealed by both techniques. Fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, peridinin and 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin were the main accessory pigments showing significant correlation with diatom-C r2 = 0.56–0.71, P < 0.05), diatom-C (r2 = 0.85–0.91, P < 0.001), dinoflagellate-C (r2 = 0.39–0.88, P < 0.05) and coccolithophore-C (r2 = 0.80–0.71, P < 0.05), respectively. Microscopy counts indicated a total of 89 species, 71% of which were dinoflagellates, 23% were diatoms and 6% other species (mainly coccolithophores). Pigment-CHEMTAX analysis also indicated the presence of pico- and nanoplankton. Phytoplankton carbon (phyto-C) concentrations were highest in the upper water column, whereas chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) showed a deep maximum. Average phyto-C was higher at the coastal station (291 ± 66 µg l−1) than at the offshore station (258 ± 35 µg l−1), not statistically different (P > 0.05). The coastal station also had higher Chl-a concentrations (0.52–3.83 µg l−1) compared to the offshore station (0.63–2.55 µg l−1), not significant (P > 0.05). Our results are consistent with other studies and indicate that the southern Black Sea is shifting towards mesotrophy with the increasing prevalence of dinoflagellates compared to diatoms.
