A variable valvetrain system is the key part of the variable stroke engine (VSE), which could achieve higher power performance and low-speed torque. An innovative axial shift valvetrain system (ASVS) was put forward to meet the air-charging requirements of a 2/4-stroke engine and complete a changeover within one working cycle. Two sets of intake and exhaust cam profiles for both intake and exhaust sides in the 2/4-stoke mode were designed for 2/4-stoke modes. Furthermore, a simulation model based on ADAMS was established to evaluate the dynamic valve motion and the contact force at different engine speeds. The dynamic simulation results show that the valve motion characteristics meet the challenges at the target engine speed of 3000 r/min. In two-stroke mode, the maximum intake valve lift could achieve 7.3 mm within 78°CaA, and the maximum exhaust valve lift could achieve 7.5 within 82°CaA on the exhaust side. In four-stroke mode, the maximum intake valve lift can achieve 8.8 mm within 140°CaA, and the maximum exhaust valve lift can achieve 8.4 mm within 140°CaA. The valve seating speeds are less than 0.3 m/s in both modes, and the fullness coefficients are more than 0.5 and 0.6 in the 2-stroke and 4-stroke mode, respectively. At the engine speed of 3000 r/min, the contact force on each component is acceptable, and the stress between cam and roller can meet the material requirement.

Abstract Effects of an upstream combustor wall on turbine nozzle endwall film cooling performance are numerically examined in a linear cascade in this paper. Film cooling is by two rows of cooling holes at 20% of the axial chord length upstream of the vane leading edge (LE) plane. The combustor walls are modeled as flat plates with square trailing edges (TE) positioned upstream of the endwall film cooling holes. A combustor wall is in line with the LE of every second vane. The influence of the combustor wall, when shifted in the axial and tangential directions, is investigated to determine effects on passage endwall cooling for three representative film cooling blowing ratios. The results show how shed vortices from the combustor wall greatly alter the flow field near the cooling holes and inside the vane passage. Film cooling distribution patterns, particularly in the entry region and along the pressure side of the passage, are affected. The combustor wall leads to an imbalance in film cooling distribution over the endwalls for adjacent vane passages. Results show a larger effect of tangential shift of the combustor wall on endwall cooling effectiveness than the effect of an equal axial shift. The study provides guidance regarding design of combustor-to-turbine transition ducts.

In rotary swaging, the material flow is not fully controlled by closure of the forming dies. This is especially noticeable in plunge rotary swaging of rod, where the workpiece is positioned into the forming zone und processed locally. As result, an uncontrolled elongation of the workpiece in axial direction takes place and an axial position shift of the workpiece relative to the dies occurs. This is a special challenge in production of linked micro parts, where single parts are interconnected in order to enable the handling as a strip and thereby a roll-to-roll production. The axial shift influences not only the subsequent positioning of neighbouring parts, but also the final geometry of the currently processed part. The presented investigation analyses the material flow during plunge micro rotary swaging on basis of in-process measurements of the workpiece shift on both sides of the forming zone as well as with the help of contour measurements of the processed parts. It is shown that the measured shift is strongly influenced by the workpiece clamping and fixation and that it can be controlled by applying low axial forces to the workpiece on one or both sides of the forming zone. Further, the geometry of the workpiece can be affected by these measures.

Design faults, imperfect manufacturing processes, change of technological operating modes of the turbocompressors in gas, petroleum, chemical and petrochemical industry cause axial rotor shifts. Therefore, the task of manufacturing the high-efficient and reliable thrust bearings is important nowadays along with effective rotor balancing, methods of axial forces calculation considering possible operating modes, improvement of static electricity elimination system, protective and monitoring systems of the axial shift. Effective methods for increasing the bearing capacity of thrust bearings, applied by TRIZ Ltd, have been studied in the report. The accepted and realized on the operating equipment solutions have enabled to increase the bearing capacity of thrust bearings significantly and to reduce oil consumption ratio, keeping down location dimensions to the equipment.
