AbstractIn this chapter, the author provides the reader with a useful description of Salutogenesis meeting places. These are the Society for Theory and Research on Salutogenesis (STARS) and the Global Working Group on Salutogenesis (GWG-Sal) of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE). The author also provides information about the Center on Salutogenesis at the University of Zürich in Switzerland. The Center is the host organization of both meeting places. The key message of this chapter is that one’s involvement in STARS will extend one’s professional network, open new avenues for research and publishing, and help achieve a vision of “salutogenesis for thriving societies.” The reader wanting to connect more directly to a global salutogenesis network will find this chapter to be of great practical value.

We now live in a new geological age, the Anthropocene – the age of humans – the start of which coincides with the founding of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) 70 years ago. In this article, we address the fundamental challenge facing health promotion in its next 70 years, which takes us almost to 2100: how do we achieve planetary health? We begin with a brief overview of the massive and rapid global ecological changes we face, the social, economic and technological driving forces behind those changes, and their health implications. At the heart of these driving forces lie a set of core values that are incompatible with planetary health. Central to our argument is the need for a new set of values, which heed and privilege the wisdom of Indigenous worldviews, as well as a renewed sense of spirituality that can re-establish a reverence for nature. We propose an Indigenous-informed framing to inspire and inform what we call planetary health promotion so that, as the United Nations Secretary General wrote recently, we can make peace with nature.

Background: Neovascular glaucoma (NVG), a form of secondary glaucoma has varying causes across geographical loca- tions. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the presentation, aetiology, and outcome of treatment of patients with NVG in a Nigerian tertiary hospital. Method: A retrospective review of records of all cases of NVG seen over a 5year period was carried out. Demographic characteristics, presenting visual acuity and coexisting ocular and systemic conditions were noted. Data were analysed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Results: 29 eyes of patients with NVG were analysed. Most of the patients (89.70%) presented with visual acuity less than 3/60 in the affected eye. All patients except one were treated with anti-glaucoma medications while only 9(31%) consented to and received anti-vascular endothelial growth factor. No patient had improvement in visual acuity despite resolution of other symptoms at 12week follow up. Conclusion: NVG though not as common as other forms of glaucoma accounted for a large proportion of monocular blindness in the affected eyes at presentation. There is need for health promotion and education among our people on the need for early preventive eye check practices. Abstract Background Health literacy has direct relevance to outcomes in patients with cancer. An adequate level of health literacy may increase uptake of screening and other supportive cancer prevention programs, which may contribute to improved outcomes. However, existing literature is limited in measuring cancer-specific health literacy and its role in cancer prevention. This study aims to investigate the relationship between cancer-related health literacy and cancer preventive behaviours through a population survey in Beijing, China. Methods A cross-sectional design was utilised to collect survey data such as respondents’ sociodemographic characteristics, cancer-related health literacy, cancer status and cancer prevention behaviours. Logistic regression modelling was applied to identify significant sociodemographic predictors for cancer literacy. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was further performed to determine the association between cancer-related health literacy and cancer preventive behaviours after adjusting for effects from sociodemographic variables. Results The findings confirmed that cancer-related health literacy was significant in predicting participants’ cancer preventive behaviours, including individual’s cancer information seeking behaviour, intention to participate in cancer screenings, early diagnosis and treatments. In addition, the results also showed that respondents’ gender, age, education, household income, residential region and cancer status were significantly associated with their levels of cancer-related health literacy. Conclusions/Key messages The results of this study have provided useful evidence on the importance of applying cancer-related health literacy to predict individual’s cancer preventive behaviours. The study has also identified the variations in cancer literacy between different sub-population groups. Future studies can develop targeted health promotion and education campaigns for more effective cancer prevention.

Background: Health promotion and education (HPE) can be a valuable component of initiatives to promote health and prevent disease in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Aims: To assess the type and scope of HPE interventions in the EMR and synthesize lessons learned. Methods: A rapid review was conducted with a PICOS (participants, interventions, comparisons, outcomes and study approaches) framework guiding approaches. Results: A growing interest in HPE approaches in the EMR was identified, with the majority of studies published within the past 5 years. Few high-quality studies were identified. Formative research predominated with nearly half of the studies recommending the need for scaling up of HPE interventions. There was also an underemphasis on implementation and evaluation of priority HPE interventions contributing to the major burdens of disease. Conclusion: The findings highlight the need to: (1) up-scale resource-efficient HPE interventions; (2) implement HPE programmes addressing noncommunicable disease priorities; and (3) capacity building to operationalize high-quality interventions and evaluations.
