Abstract The connection of the agri-food sector with the agenda of sustainable development comes naturally, as the chain from production to processing, trading, distribution and consumption is directly connected with significant issues in environmental, economic, and social realms. Today’s challenge for businesses is not whether to embrace sustainability, but rather how to effectively establish sustainable supply chains. Therefore, a solid grasp of the move from “conventional” to “sustainable” supply chains is necessary. In this paper, we focus on the supply chain management of the agri-food sector, seeking to shed light on practices which may contribute to the transition of the sector towards sustainability. In this vein, we extend the conceptual framework which was proposed by Beske and Seuring (2014) so that it accommodates the contemporary particularities of agri-food supply chains.

Herbal products are now considered among the most important sources of phenolic compounds: the FINNOVER project aimed at the creation and development of sustainable supply chains to extract and use natural biologically active agents. Vitis vinifera is one of the most utilised herbal products derived from buds and sprouts as polyphenolic food supplements for its homeostatic and astringent properties. This research was aimed to describe the antioxidant capacity and the phytochemical composition of V. vinifera herbal products by the application of spectroscopic and chromatographic fingerprints considering phenolics as potential markers to significantly differentiate traditional preparations (macerates) from innovative extracts obtained by an ultrasound extraction from V. vinifera buds. Two different commercial products were also considered. Flavonols were the most abundant class in ultrasound extracts (45%), while phenolic acids were the most important class in traditional macerates (49%) and commercial bud-preparations (about 50%). This study may support the potential use of V. vinifera bud-products (starting from pruning byproducts) as food supplements to integrate human diet with good amounts of phenolics. Finally, the use of different extraction methods on the same plant material could be an important development to produce innovative herbal products with a phytochemical composition similar to traditional preparations.

PurposeNowadays, many firms are finding ways to enhance the survivability of sustainable supply chains (SUSSCs). The present study aims to develop a model for the SUSSCs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachWith the help of exhaustive literature review, constructs and items are identified to collect the responses from different SMEs. A total of 278 complete responses are received and 6 hypotheses are developed. Hypotheses testing have been done using structural equation modeling (SEM).FindingsMajor constructs identified for the study are supply chain (SC) performance measurement under uncertainty (SPMU), supply chain cooperation (SCCO), supply chain positioning (SCP), supply chain administration (SCA), supply chain feasibility (SCF) and the SUSSCs. From statistical analysis of the data collected, it can be concluded that the considered latent variables contribute significantly towardsthe model fit.Research limitations/implicationsThe present study contributes to the existing literature on disruptions and survivability. The study can be further carried out in context to different countries and sectors to generalize the findings.Practical implicationsThe research findings will be fruitful for SMEs and other organizations in developing strategies to improve survivability during uncertain business environments.Originality/valueThe study has developed a model that shows that the identified latent variables and their indicators contribute significantly toward the dependent variable, i.e. survivability. It contributes significantly in bridging the research gaps existing in context to the survivability of SMEs.

As the chemical sector looks to decarbonize, one promising solution is the utilization of bio-feedstocks and biowaste to produce functional molecules. There is, therefore, great interest in understanding how and where to integrate these resources within chemical supply chains. To assist such efforts, screening methodologies relying on large reaction networks have recently been proposed.1,2 However, they are currently hindered by a lack of data for region-specific heterogenous raw materials compositions, as well as upstream pretreatments to isolate the important feedstocks. This study illustrates the workflow and data requirements of early stage biowaste stream evaluation through a case study on the waste landscape in and around the Singapore region. We first investigate biowaste sources that are available, stable in quantities, underutilized, pure, and yielding the feedstocks of interest. Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB), a lignocellulosic biowaste stream widely available in Malaysia and Indonesia, meets these criteria. We then simulate an ethanol organosolv pretreatment process for the fractionation of cellulose, lignin and xylose from EFB, and characterise the economic and environmental performances of the process through its exergy profile; this enables a link to chemical pathway identification in reaction networks. This study outlines the initial steps towards generating open datasets on biowaste for development of sustainable supply chains.

The sustainability of supply chains is now one of the major global issues due to the vision of the United Nations (UN). By 2030, it is the primary focus of the UN to attain all the seventeen sustainable development goals (SDG). Hence, the primary goal of this study is to examine how practitioners think about sustainable supply chains. Five hypotheses are established to assess the perceptions of supply chain professionals. Forty-two (42) indicators are gathered from the existing literature to establish the survey instrument to collect the responses from supply chain practitioners. Finally, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to evaluate the mediation effects. It is found that social aspects are significantly impacted by the environmental aspects, as compared to the economic aspects. None of these indicators play any mediation effect, as all three are equally important for the sustainable supply chains.
