The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends rapid testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection as a key element of epidemic control. The Abbott BinaxNow is in widespread use in the United States for self-testing and as part of public health screening campaigns, but has not been evaluated for use with the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. We recruited individuals testing positive for COVID-19 PCR at an academic medical center. Anterior nasal swabs were stored in viral transport media and evaluated by viral load quantification and whole genome sequencing. We created serial dilutions from 2.5x103- 2.5x105 viral copies/specimen for two delta and omicron specimens, respectively, and tested each with the BinaxNow assay per manufacturer instructions. Results were interpreted by three readers, blinded to the specimen variant and concentration. All omicron and delta specimens with concentrations of 100,000 copies/swab or greater were positive by the BinaxNow Assay, a concentration similar to previously reported limits of detection for this assay. Assay sensitivity diminished below that. This study demonstrates that Omicron variant SARS-CoV-2 infections are detected by the BinaxNow rapid antigen assay. Additional laboratory and clinical validation assessments are needed to better determine their limits of detection and performance in real-world settings.

We evaluated the usefulness of scores from two transdiagnostic scales—the 8-item version of the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth and the second edition of the Avoidance and Action Questionnaire—for estimating symptom severity on two measures of depression and anxiety. Responses from 797 college students, who mostly identified as White and female, to both measures of psychological inflexibility were analyzed to determine how well scores estimated anxiety and depression above or below a given severity level and at specific categories of symptom severity. Findings indicated that scores from both measures were acceptable to excellent screeners of concurrent ratings of anxiety and depression. Results varied somewhat depending on the measure used, level of severity targeted, and scope of screening. By investigating the screening accuracy of these transdiagnostic measures and potential cut scores to ease in interpreting results, we hope these measures might prove useful for addressing barriers in public health screening endeavors.

Abstract Over the past decade, the global research agenda focused on finding paths to the future development of chemistry. Chemical detection and measurement is an important and fundamental discipline of chemistry and it keeps playing a significant role in chemical research in the next 10–15 years. The goal of chemical detection is to overcome the state-of-art temporospatial resolution limit. Meanwhile, the application of modern chemical technology to serve human health is also highly concerned. We have summarized 10 aspects related to the field, including complex samples analysis, biomacromolecule structure and function, single-entity analysis, large-scale scientific instrument, rapid chemical and electron transfer processes, big data and artificial intelligence, bioimaging, in vivo real-time detection, biomolecule recognition and disease therapy, and public health screening. In this review, we outlined the history and the frontiers of chemical detection and measurements in enhancing the development of chemical sciences. Moreover, we also focused on the major challenges that should be solved in the future in which researchers should develop new techniques and analytical methods to drastically accelerate chemical sciences.

Regular physical activity (PA) is known to reduce the risk of serious community-acquired infections. We examined the association of PA with the morbidity and mortality resulting from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection in the South Korean population. Patients who tested positive for severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 and who underwent public health screening between 2014 and 2017 (n = 6288) were included. Age- and sex-matched controls (n = 125,772) were randomly selected from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Leisure-time PA was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. The mean PA levels were lower in the patient than in the control group (558.2 ± 516.3 vs. 580.2 ± 525.7 metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-min/week, p = 0.001). Patients with moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) were associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 morbidity (odds ratio (OR), 0.90; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.86–0.95). In addition, a standard deviation (SD) increment in MET/week (525.3 MET-min/week) was associated with a 4% decrease in the risk of COVID-19 morbidity (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93–0.99). MVPA and an SD increment in MET/week were associated with lower mortality (MVPA: OR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.26–0.87; per SD increment: OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.48–0.88). Higher levels of regular PA were associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection and mortality, highlighting the importance of maintaining appropriate levels of PA along with social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: To evaluate Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) values in Turkish children between the ages 6 and 14 years old according to height, gender and age. Methods: Data was obtained from public health screening days in primary care practice on 1439 children. Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured for each child with a Mini Wright Peak Flow Meter. The study was assessed to find a correlation between heights, age and PEF values in children. Results: In our study, PEF values increased significantly with age and height in both genders. According to our results, the equation for prediction of PEF was calculated for girls as (7.37 × age [years])+ (3.02 × height [cm]) – 222.1 (p < .001, r= 0.83) and for boys (7.92 × age [years])+ (3.13 × height [cm]) – 230.9 (p < .001, r =0.83). Conclusions: The PEF values are statistically significant associated with age and height for girls and boys. The prediction equations specifically developed for children in Kocaeli can be used in clinical practice and these equations may help clinicians to better characterize individual or population airway responsiveness.
