Hazelnut (Corylus avellana) is a monoecious, dichogamous plant species that flowers in winter and early spring. In traditional hazelnut growing regions, hazelnut cultivars generally express protandry where the male flowers bloom before the female flowers. Nut set requires that compatible pollen be shed when the stigmas of the main cultivar are receptive. In this study, the floral phenology and date of leaf budbreak of five selections and 19 hazelnut cultivars from Europe and North America were observed over four years in southern Ontario, and results were compared with cumulative growing degree days. In the continental climate of southern Ontario, most cultivars showed protogyny. Flowering dates varied over the years with pollination occurring in a period of 2 - 3 weeks in early spring. These cultivars were classified into early, mid, and late blooming types. A growing degree day model was a better tool than average daily temperatures to predict the flowering dates of catkins and female flowers. Averaged over years, most of the cultivars in this study have a female bloom that is likely too early for the pollen shed by most of the other cultivars. This would likely impact yields in a commercial orchard. However, ‘Jefferson’, ‘Gene’, and ‘Epsilon’ have late females that are receptive when other cultivars are shedding pollen.

Abstract The breeding of hybrid cultivars of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is not well described, especially the segregation and inheritance of traits that are important for yield. A total of 23 families were produced from genetically diverse parents to investigate the inheritance of morphological traits and their association with biomass accumulation and cannabinoid yield. In addition, a novel classification method for canopy architecture was developed. The strong linear relationship between wet and dry biomass provided an accurate estimate of final dry stripped floral biomass. Of all field and aerial measurements, basal stem diameter was determined to be the single best selection criterion for final dry stripped floral biomass yield. Along with stem diameter, canopy architecture and stem growth predictors described the majority of the explainable variation of biomass yield. Within-family variance for morphological and cannabinoid measurements reflected the heterozygosity of the parents. While selfed populations suffered from inbreeding depression, hybrid development in hemp will require at least one inbred parent to achieve uniform growth and biomass yield. Nevertheless, floral phenology remains a confounding factor in selection because of its underlying influence on biomass production highlighting the need to understand the genetic basis for flowering time in the breeding of uniform cultivars.

Background and aims – The reproductive characteristics of sympatric Cactaceae are important because they help to understand interfering or facilitating mechanisms that allow their coexistence. Globose Cactaceae show melittophily flowers that may be attractive to a shared set of pollinators, and if the flowering events are not overlapping, flower resources could be present for the pollinators through time. Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus and Neolloydia conoidea are two sympatric cactus species in the southern Chihuahuan Desert. The objective of this study is to describe and compare some reproductive characteristics of these species.Material and methods – Individuals of Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus and Neolloydia conoidea (n = 231 and 212, respectively) were marked and monitored during one year, recording for each species, the floral phenology, behaviour and morphology, flower visitors, breeding and mating systems (through pollination experiments).Key results – The flowering periods of these species do not overlap. The flowers of both species are melittophily, with the same shape, colour, and similar behaviour; both are obligate xenogamous plants. The mating system of Neolloydia conoidea is outcrossing but mixed in Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus. They share 75% of pollinators (solitary and social bees).Conclusions – The temporal blooming separation of these species could be an important factor to facilitate coexistence within the xerophyte community since they share the same set of pollinators to achieve their reproductive success.

Population history and colonization dynamics in the Mediterranean mosaic landscape have closely interacted with natural selection to shape patterns of variation in mating systems and the evolution of floral traits and polymorphisms. Floral phenology is closely adapted to avoid the summer drought regime in many plant communities. Many plant species have generalist pollination systems with a complex of tight and loose interactions that affect the evolution of reproductive traits. Floral traits have clearly accompanied diversification in many groups of plants. The evolution of interactions of plants with their pollinators at the landscape and biogeographic scales illustrates intriguing examples of ongoing evolution.

Besides the eff ectiveness of floral visitors, to better understand pollination systems is necessary to consider the role of predators. Ants are ubiquitous on the vegetation, especially on plants bearing extrafloral (EFNs) and pericarpial nectaries (PNs). Both EFNs and PNs reward ants which in turn provide to plants effective protection against herbivores. However, ants can also repel pollinators and cause an indirect cost for the plant partner, although the role of ants on pollinators’ performance has rarely been assessed in Neotropics, mainly on PN-bearing plants. Here, our main aim was, through an experimental field study in terms of ant’s presence versus absence, to test the hypothesis that ants dissuade floral visitors by decreasing the time spent during visits on the PN-bearing Declieuxia fruticosa. Additionally, we recorded floral phenology, and quantified and qualified floral visits. We showed that bees were the most frequent pollinators and the presence of ants dissuades them. In ant presence, pollinators were on average 30% faster than without ants. Since D. fruticosa produces fruits mainly after cross-pollination, the role of ants may be profi table to plants as they induce pollinators to do shorter visits and search for other fl owers in conspecifi c plants. Therefore, pollinators avoid stay at longer on plants with ants in order to avoid attacks, which may contribute to plant outcrossing. However, whether positive or negative the effects of ants on D. fruticosa reproduction are, they remain to be studied.


Petersianthus macrocarpus is a plant species whose pollens are potentially allergenic. This plant is present from the coast to the centre of the country. The objective of this study is to prevent populations from being exposed to the pollens of Petersianthus macrocarpus. Specifically, it was a question of defining the flowering of Petersianthus macrocarpus, evaluating the impact of the climate on this flowering and listing the populations most exposed to P. macrocarpus pollens. The study took place in Abidjan, in the commune of Yopougon, specifically in South Niangon, from September 2017 to June 2020. Sampling by quadrat allowed to determine the number of individuals, the cover, the density and the frequency of the vegetation. Floral phenology was carried out by weekly observations using binoculars. The coverage in each quadrat was 1 and the frequency 100%. Individuals less than 6 m high did not bear any flowers. Two flowering periods were observed in the years 2017 to 2019. The first was from April to June, the second from November to January. However, there was no flowering from April to June in 2020. The evolution of rainfall in 2020 was not identical to that of the three previous years. The phenology of Petersianthus macrocarpus presents periods of high risk of pollinosis and is influenced by rainfall. Increasing wind speed exposes new populations to pollen. The installation of pollen collectors is certainly necessary to establish the pollen calendar of Petersianthus macrocarpus in Côte d’Ivoire.
