The surgical management of Laryngeal webs is challenging and is associated with a high recurrence rate due the presence of opposing raw mucosal surfaces of the vocal cords, especially near the anterior commissure which causes re-scarring. We describe an endoscopic technique of mucosal flap lateralization (MFL) with ultrasound guidance, which prevents the apposition of the anterior raw surfaces of the vocal cords after web incision, thus avoiding recurrence.

Aim: to identify risk factors for neoplasms recurrence removed by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).Patients and methods: the single-center retrospective observational study included 207 patients with 260 benign colon neoplasms. There were 95 (45.9%) males and 112 (54.1%) females. The median age of the patients was 67 (27-80) years. The results obtained were assessed using following criteria: morbidity rate, complication type, hospital stay, tumor site, number of neoplasms in colon, lateral growth, fragmentation rate, technical difficulties (mucosal fold convergence)during surgery, grade of dysplasia, recurrence rate. Results: intraoperative fragmentation of the neoplasms during mucosectomy occurred in 48/260 (18.5%) cases. Postoperative complications within the period of up to 30 days occurred in 13/207 (6.3%) patients. The most frequent 9 (4.2%) postoperative complication arising after mucosectomy was post-polypectomy syndrome. Another 4 (2.0%) patients produced bleeding after the surgery, which required repeated endoscopic procedure. No mortality occurred. The tumor size exceeding 25 mm (Exp (B) = 0.179; 95% CI = 0.05-0.7; p = 0.014), severe dysplasia (Exp (B) = 0.113; 95% CI = 0.03-0.4; p = 0.001) and fold convergence (Exp (B) = 0.2; 95% CI = 0.07-0.7; p = 0.015) are independent risk factors for disease recurrence. Conclusion: mucosectomy is indicated for colon adenomas if its size does not exceed 25 mm and can be removed en bloc.

The present study is an attempt to describe the gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal of the economically important Nile fish, Hydrocyon lineatus, which is exclusively a carnivorous fish. The genus Hydrocyan is a member of the family Characidae. The family Characidae is a very generalized group confined to the fresh waters of Africa and South America. The species number about 500, of which only one-fifth are African. Of the twenty African genera only eight are represented in the Nile system. Living specimens of Hydrocyon lineatus were used during this work to study some aspects of the anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal. The general organization and structure of the different layers was found to confirm to the case found in general chordate organization. Nonetheless, it was thought pertinent to conclude that similarity in structure of the caeca to that of the intestine would justify replacement of the old nomenclature from pyloric caeca to intestinal caeca. Again, the presence of an intestinal mucosal fold could possibly be a characteristic diagnostic feature of the group in as much as it could be pleisiomorphic characteristic only occurring in lower groups of chordates.

A 32-year-old virgin presented with psychosexual dysfunction and a mass in the vulva. The mass arose from the cervix with a thin pedicle and it was 6 × 1.5 cm. The mass protruded outside of the hymen, it had a canal inside and an opening at the distal end, and it had a genital-like appearance. A mucosal fold was found in the tubular lumen. Fibrous smooth muscle was observed in the tubal wall, which was covered by squamous and endometrial glandular epithelium on each side. A cervical giant polyp with a canal inside the polyp might be differentially diagnosed from prolapsed genitals and abnormal sexual development. Polypectomy by mini-hysteroscopy was effective for alleviating psychosexual dysfunction caused by the mass in this patient.

The histometry, organosomatic parameters and growth performance of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus fed with commercial probiotics, Lactobacillus pentosus supplemented diet was assessed in the present study. Six experimental diets were formulated, at different inclusion levels of Lactobacillus pentosus of 0, 102,104, 106, 108and 1010 cfu in T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 respectively. C. gariepinus were stocked into concrete tanks of 1.93 m by 1.93 m by 1.09 m. Each experimental diet was fed to three replicate groups of fish for 42 days. At the end of the feeding, histometrical parameters like mucosal fold length, mucosal fold breadth, mucosal fold area improved with increasing supplementation levels of L. pentosus. There was also significantly better P > 0.05 organosomatic parameters in all treatments with increasing level of supplementation. The best growth performance in term of specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in Treatment 3 as 10.49±0.23 and 1.56±0.22 respectively. The enhanced growth performance and histometry in fish fed diets with L. pentosus supplementation resulted in the best biological performance in African catfish at 1.0 g per 100 g of feed representing 104 cfu supplementation level. Therefore the present study shows that L. pentosus can be recommended as an important probiotic in aquaculture.

A 2.4-kg, six-year-old, sterilised, male Pomeranian presented with dyspnoea that had begun two years prior and slowly progressed. Pharyngoscopy identified a redundant laryngopharyngeal mucosal fold that was being aspirated cranially into the laryngeal opening causing upper airway obstruction. A diode laser was used to resect the fold. Postoperative laryngeal oedema necessitated the use of a tracheostomy tube for just over two days. Otherwise, the dog made an uneventful recovery. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of a redundant laryngopharyngeal mucosal fold resulting in upper airway obstruction in a dog.

Purpose. The study aimed to investigate canalicular/lacrimal sac mucosal folds (CLS-MFs) in vivo and in cadavers in order to explore their functional roles in the lacrimal drainage system.Method.The observations of CLS-MFs in vivo were performed on 16 patients with chronic dacryocystitis after undergoing an endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR). The lacrimal sacs and common canaliculi of 19 adult cadavers were dissected. The opening/closing of an orifice and mucosal fold was recorded. All of the specimens were subjected to a histological examination.Results.The upper and lower lacrimal canaliculi in all of the samples united to form a common canaliculus that opened to the lacrimal sac. CLS-MFs were observed in 10 of the 16 patients (62.5%) and 9 of the 19 cadavers (47.4%). The orifices or mucosal folds could be opened or closed when related muscles contracted or relaxed. Histological sections showed a mucosal fold at one side of an orifice.Conclusion.Common canaliculus is the most common type that the canaliculus opens to lacrimal sac. CLS-MFs exist in a certain ratio that can be opened/closed with the movement of the orifices. They may be involved in the drainage of tears or the pathogenesis of acute dacryocystitis or lacrimal sac mucocele.
