Purpose: To investigate the use of second AREDS2 formula in patients with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration. Methods: A prospective survey was conducted between December 2019 and July 2020. The questionnaire consisted of 24 questions on demographics, disease perception, and formula intake. Results: The survey included 100 patients (males, 56%; age [>60 years], 89%). We found that 66%, 84%, and 93% of patients had a good understanding of their disease, had stopped smoking, and were aware of the need for antioxidant supplements; 58% of patients were aware of the supplement they were prescribed, and 63.8% (37% of total) were using the AREDS2 formula. Only 8% of patients had knowledge regarding the supplement ingredients, and 91% consumed the supplement daily. Patients with long disease duration used supplements less frequently (p < 0.05). Older patients and those with a low education level had a limited perception of the disease (p < 0.05).Conclusions: In this prospective survey, some patients consumed supplements other than the AREDS2 formula. Further studies are required to determine ways to increase the use of the AREDS2 formula.

Abstract Background Fear of death and its associated anxiety are among the effective factors of mental health in patients with cancer. The present study aimed to predict death anxiety based on body image concerns mediated by disease perception in patients with breast cancer. Methods In this descriptive correlation study, Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, Littleton’s Body Image Concern Inventory, and Broadbent's Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire were used to collect data. The statistical population included all patients with breast cancer in Abadan city in 2020 who referred to medical centers for six months. A total of 200 of which were selected as the sample of the study using convenience sampling. The proposed model was evaluated using path analysis with AMOS software. Results The results showed that there was a significant association between body image and disease perception (β = 0.33, P = 0.001), and death anxiety (β = 0.57, P = 0.001), and between disease perception and death anxiety (β = 0.39, P = 0.001). There was a relationship between body image and death anxiety through the mediating role of disease perception in patients with breast cancer (P = 0.009). Conclusion According to the results of the study, the relationship of body image with death anxiety through the mediation of disease perception had a good fit and is an important step in identifying the factors affecting the death anxiety of patients with breast cancer.

Background: Understanding the disease symptoms is among the important psychological and behavioral variables in cancer treatment, which is based on the acquisition of information from different sources and patient's beliefs and can affect the mental health and capability of the individual in compliance with the disease. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of coping strategies with death anxiety through the mediation of disease perception in patients with breast cancer in Abadan city in 2020. Methods: The study was a descriptive correlation performed by path analysis. The statistical population included all patients with breast cancer in Abadan city and 200 of which were selected as the sample of the study using convenience sampling. The research instruments included the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ), and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief IPQ). The proposed model was evaluated using path analysis with AMOS software. Results: The results showed that there was a significant association between problem-focused strategy and disease perception (P= 0.002), problem-focused strategy and death anxiety (P= 0.001), emotion-focused strategy and disease perception (P= 0.001), disease perception and death anxiety (P= 0.001). There was no significant association between problem-focused strategy and death anxiety. The results of path analysis indicated that disease perception played a mediating role in the association between the emotion- and problem-focused strategies with death anxiety (P= 0.01). Conclusion: According to the results of the study, the proposed model had a good fit and is an important step in identifying the factors affecting the death anxiety of patients with breast cancer.

Aim: To investigate the patients' perception of their disease, its management and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on persons living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in Malaysia. Patients & methods: An online survey comprising 42 questions was conducted on ALS patients during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Responses were received from 37/60 (62%) participants with ALS directly or through their caregivers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, two-thirds of patients were negatively impacted by the sudden disruption to their hospital appointments, rehabilitation sessions and reduced social interactions. Conclusion: This study provided insight into patients' perception of their care and management of ALS in Malaysia which will facilitate in implementing changes that can improve care to persons living with this devastating illness.

Abstract Background Chronic kidney disease has become a major health problem around the world. It displays no symptoms until the later stages. Therefore, its early detection is crucial, and a suitable intervention is necessary to halt its development. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a recently formulated Chronic Kidney Disease Perception Scale (CKDPS) for diabetic patients based on Social Psychology, and their perceptions based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). Methods The newly developed CKDPS instrument was tested on 300 patients with diabetes mellitus in a cross-sectional study. The number of domains, model-fit index, construct validity, and internal consistency of this instrument were determined using exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results The EFA yielded nine domains: illness identity, timeline motivation, medical practice and co-operation for Social Psychology, and perceived benefit, perceived barriers, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and perceived cue to action for HBM. Four items with low factor loading were removed. CFA yielded the following fit indices for Social Psychology: the goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.889, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.934, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.053, normed chi-square (NC) = 1.831; and the following for HBM: GFI = 0.834, CFI = 0.957, RMSEA = 0.053, NC = 1.830. Values of Cronbach’s α ranged between 0.760 and 0.909. Conclusions The CKDPS includes 61 questions across nine domains, divided under two categories of Social Psychology and HBM. It is also a valid and reliable tool for measuring diabetic patients’ perception of CKD prevention that can be used in larger studies.

Abstract Background Stable angina pectoris (SAP) is a common cardiovascular disease, which brings health burden to society. Acupuncture therapy is effective in improving SAP as adjunctive therapy, nevertheless, there were controversies on the effect of acupuncture on disease-affected meridian (DAM), sham acupoints and nonaffected meridian (NAM). This study evaluated the effect of acupuncture on DAM as adjunctive therapy, and the difference in acupuncture on DAM, sham acupoints, and nonaffected meridian NAM. Methods Thirteen online databases were searched from inception to December 2, 2019. Risk of bias and quality of evidence for outcomes were respectively assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool and the GRADE approach. RevMan 5.3 was adopted to conduct meta-analysis. Results Thirteen RCTs including 1026 participants were included in this study. Acupuncture therapy could be effective in the improvement of angina severity, ECG results, 6-MWT, SAQ results (physical limitation, angina stability, angina frequency, treatment satisfaction, disease perception), anxiety, HRV (LF, LF/HF), ET, CRP, and reduction of nitroglycerin intake. Acupuncture on DAM could be more beneficial than acupuncture on sham acupoints in aspects of angina severity, 6-MWT, SAQ results (angina stability, angina frequency, treatment satisfaction, disease perception). Compared to acupuncture in NAM, acupuncture on DAM could be more effective in SAQ results (angina stability, angina frequency, treatment satisfaction). Moreover, acupuncture on DAM did not increase the risk of dropout and adverse effect. Conclusions Acupuncture on DAM could effectively improving SAP, and it could be more effective compared with acupuncture on sham acupoints or NAM. However, these conclusions were limited by low-quality of most of included studies. Registration Open Science Framework registration (DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/F9DTW).
