Abstract Background Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) helps solid tumors to lose their intercellular adhesive property and drives metastasis. As mangosteen fruit is known for many beneficial effects including antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-tumorigenic properties and has been used widely in traditional medicine, we interrogated its possible anti-metastatic effect on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Results We found that aqueous mangosteen rind extract (MRE) inhibited growth of MCF-7 and altered the transcript levels of ERα, ERβ, and EGFR genes. Additionally, the MRE changed the expression of important markers of EMT, E-Cadherin, N-Cadherin, Snail, and MMP-9. Moreover, MRE inhibited migration of MCF-7 cells. Conclusion The results suggest that MRE suppresses growth and inhibits epithelial-mesenchymal transition in MCF-7 cells.

Millimeter-scale calcium alginate aqueous core capsules (mm-CaSA-Caps) are suitable for embedding of temperature and chemical sensitive substances because of its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, mm-CaSA-Caps were coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via in situ self-polymerization of dopamine (DA) under mild conditions. During the modification process, mm-CaSA-Caps transferred quickly from colorless and transparent capsules to dark and opaque “pearls” in 15 min. The obtained MWNTs-polydopamine- (PDA-) modified mm-CaSA-Caps (mm-MWNTs-PDA@CaSA-Caps) retained the spherical appearance of mm-CaSA-Caps with uniform coating of MWNTs-PDA. Obviously, the MWNTs were easily coated on the mm-PDA@CaSA-Caps due to the strong adhesive property of PDA. As the MWNTs content increased, the stacking density of MWNTs on surface of the mm-MWNTs-PDA@CaSA-Caps raised. The water loss ratio of mm-MWNTs-PDA@CaSA-Caps was enhanced ascribed to increasing the path length of water by raising stacking density of MWNTs. This study provided a new path for enhancement of the barrier property of hydrogel capsules.

AbstractThe short survival time of transplanted adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) is a problem for skin wound healing. Transplantation after the formation of cellular spheroids has been investigated as a promising method for prolonging cellular survival. However, there have been technical restrictions for transplantation of spheroids in clinical practice. Here, we show an effective method for transplantation of ASC spheroids onto skin wounds in order to efficiently cure refractory ulcers. To assist anchoring of spheroids onto skin wounds, we used a 120-nm-thick free-standing film (nanosheet) that has a highly adhesive property. Bioluminescence imaging showed that ASC spheroids carried by the nanosheet survived for 14 days, which is about two-times longer than that previously reported. Wounds treated with a nanosheet carrying ASC spheroids were 4-times smaller than untreated wounds on day 14. This method for transplantation of spheroids could be applied to cell therapy for various refractory skin wounds.
