AbstractCongestion-aware scheduling in case of downlink cellular communication has ignored the distribution of diverse content to different clients with heterogeneous secrecy requirements. Other possible application areas that encounter the preceding issue are secure offloading in mobile-edge computing, and vehicular communication. In this paper, we extend the work in Arvanitaki et al. (SN Comput Sci 1(1):53, 2019) by taking into consideration congestion and random access. Specifically, we study a two-user congestion-aware broadcast channel with heterogeneous traffic and different security requirements. We consider two randomized policies for selecting which packets to transmit, one is congestion-aware by taking into consideration the queue size, whereas the other one is congestion-agnostic. We analyse the throughput and the delay performance under two decoding schemes at the receivers, and provide insights into their relative security performance and into how congestion control at the queue holding confidential information can help decrease the average delay per packet. We show that the congestion-aware policy provides better delay, throughput, and secrecy performance for large arrival packet probabilities at the queue holding the confidential information. The derived results also take account of the self-interference caused at the receiver for whom confidential data is intended due to its full-duplex operation while jamming the communication at the other user. Finally, for two decoding schemes, we formulate our problems in terms of multi-objective optimization, which allows for finding a trade-off between the average packet delay for packets intended for the legitimate user and the throughput for the other user under congestion-aware policy.

AbstractIn this paper we study a large system of N servers, each with capacity to process at most C simultaneous jobs; an incoming job is routed to a server if it has the lowest occupancy amongst d (out of N) randomly selected servers. A job that is routed to a server with no vacancy is assumed to be blocked and lost. Such randomized policies are referred to JSQ(d) (Join the Shortest Queue out of d) policies. Under the assumption that jobs arrive according to a Poisson process with rate $N\lambda^{(N)}$ where $\lambda^{(N)}=\sigma-\frac{\beta}{\sqrt{N}\,}$ , $\sigma\in\mathbb{R}_+$ and $\beta\in\mathbb{R}$ , we establish functional central limit theorems for the fluctuation process in both the transient and stationary regimes when service time distributions are exponential. In particular, we show that the limit is an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process whose mean and variance depend on the mean field of the considered model. Using this, we obtain approximations to the blocking probabilities for large N, where we can precisely estimate the accuracy of first-order approximations.

In the design of multi-loop Networked Control Systems (NCSs), wherein each control system is characterized by heterogeneous dynamics and associated with a certain set of timing specifications, appropriate metrics need to be employed for the synthesis of control and networking policies to efficiently respond to the requirements of each control loop. The majority of the design approaches for sampling, scheduling, and control policies include either time-based or event-based metrics to perform pertinent actions in response to the changes of the parameters of interest. We specifically focus in this article on Age-of-Information (AoI) as a recently-developed time-based metric and threshold-based triggering function as a generic Event-Triggered (ET) metric. We consider multiple heterogeneous stochastic linear control systems that close their feedback loops over a shared communication network. We investigate the co-design across the NCS and discuss the pros and cons with the AoI and ET approaches in terms of asymptotic control performance measured by Linear-Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) cost functions. In particular, sampling and scheduling policies combining AoI and stochastic ET metrics are proposed. It is argued that pure AoI functions that generate decision variables solely upon minimizing the average age irrespective of control systems dynamics may not be able to improve the overall NCS performance even compared with purely randomized policies. Our theoretical analysis is validated through several simulation scenarios.

In this paper, we study the control problem of optimal assignment of tasks to servers in a multi-server queue with inhomogeneous servers. In order to improve the performance of the system, we use a periodic deterministic sequence of job assignments to servers called a billiard sequence. We then use a genetic algorithm (GA) for computing a near-optimal billiard sequence. By means of a recent result obtained in the area of ordinal optimization, we show that the solution found by the GA belongs to the top 1% of possible choices for such a billiard sequence. As illustrated by numerical examples, not only is the performance under a billiard sequence better than that of the corresponding randomized policy, the optimal billiard sequence even outperforms the billiard implementation of the optimal randomized policy. The framework we introduce in this paper is suitable for general optimization problems over (periodic) deterministic decision sequences. Given the significant performance improvement that a switch from randomized policies to billiard sequences yields, this framework is of importance in practical applications. Finally, we show that constrained or multi-objective optimization can be dealt with in our framework as well.
