Over the past few decades, video gaming has evolved at a tremendous rate although game input methods have been slower to change. Game input methods continue to rely on two-handed control of the joystick and D-pad or the keyboard and mouse for simultaneously controlling player movement and camera actions. Bi-manual input poses a significant play impediment to those with severe motor impairments. In this work, we propose and evaluate a hands-free game input control method that uses real-time facial expression recognition. Through our novel input method, our goal is to enable and empower individuals with neurological and neuromuscular diseases, who may lack hand muscle control, to be able to independently play video games. To evaluate the usability and acceptance of our system, we conducted a remote user study with eight severely motor-impaired individuals. Our results indicate high user satisfaction and greater preference for our input system with participants rating the input system as easy to learn. With this work, we aim to highlight that facial expression recognition can be a valuable input method.

In multilingual semantic representation, the interaction between humans and computers faces the challenge of understanding meaning or semantics, which causes ambiguity and inconsistency in heterogeneous information. This paper proposes a Machine Natural Language Parser (MParser) to address the semantic interoperability problem between users and computers. By leveraging a semantic input method for sharing common atomic concepts, MParser represents any simple English sentence as a bag of unique and universal concepts via case grammar of an explainable machine natural language. In addition, it provides a human and computer-readable and -understandable interaction concept to resolve the semantic shift problems and guarantees consistent information understanding among heterogeneous sentence-level contexts. To evaluate the annotator agreement of MParser outputs that generates a list of English sentences under a common multilingual word sense, three expert participants manually and semantically annotated 75 sentences (505 words in total) in English. In addition, 154 non-expert participants evaluated the sentences’ semantic expressiveness. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed MParser shows higher compatibility with human intuitions.

Abstract Artificial intelligence in general and optimization tasks applied to the design of very efficient structures rely on response surfaces to forecast the output of functions, and are vital part of these methodologies. Yet they have important limitations, since greater precisions require greater data sets, thus, training or updating larger response surfaces become computationally expensive or unfeasible. This has been an important bottle neck limitation to achieve more promising results, rendering many optimization and AI tasks with a low performance. To solve this challenge, a new methodology created to segment response surfaces is hereby presented. Differently than other similar methodologies, this algorithm named outer input method has a very simple and robust operation, generating a mesh of near isopopulated partitions of inputs which share similitude. The great advantage it offers is that it can be applied to any data set with any type of distribution, such as random, Cartesian, or clustered, for domains with any number of coordinates, significantly simplifying any metamodel with a mesh ensemble. This study demonstrates how one of the most known and precise metamodel denominated Kriging, yet with expensive computation costs, can be significantly simplified with a response surface mesh, increasing training speed up to 567 times, while using a quad-core parallel processing. Since individual mesh elements can be parallelized or updated individually, its faster operational speed has its speed increased.

Ammonia is a representative PM-2.5 secondary product, and the need for management is emerging as health and living damage caused by fine particulate matter worsens. The main source of ammonia is the agricultural sector, and in Korea, 79% of the total ammonia emissions are emitted from the agricultural sector. Among them, there is high uncertainty about how to calculate emissions from ammonia discharged from fertilizer use, and inventory in the U.S. and Europe is borrowed, so inventory needs to be improved according to the situation in Korea. In this study, the ammonia inventory in the agricultural sector in Korea and abroad was examined, and additional activity data that can be used were reviewed. In addition, in order to improve the emission calculation method, the emission was calculated in three ways by different factors. As a result, it was confirmed that the amount of discharge varies depending on the type of soil use or whether cultivated crops are considered, and the possibility of excessive fertilizer top-dress by farmers was confirmed. In order to calculate the emission at a more detailed level based on this study, basic data such as fertilizer input method and regional distribution of crops should be systematically collected, and related follow-up studies should be conducted.

This paper presents an ultra-wideband (UWB) down-conversion mixer with low-noise, high-gain and small-size. The negative impedance technique and source input method are applied for the proposed mixer. The negative impedance achieves the dynamic current injection and increases the mixer output impedance, which reduces the mixer flicker noise and increases its conversion gain. The source input method allows the input matching networks to be cancelled, avoiding the noise and loss introduced by the matching resistors, saving the chip area occupied by the matching inductors. The proposed mixer is designed in 45-nm SOI process provided by GlobalFoundries. The simulation results show a conversion gain of 11.4–14.3 dB, ranging from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, a minimum noise figure of 9.8 dB, a RF port return loss of less than −11 dB, a port-to-port isolation of better than −48 dB, and a core chip area of 0.16 × 0.16 mm2. The power consumption from a 1 V supply voltage is 2.85 mW.
