Background/aims The Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire is categorised as a ‘yellow flag’ pain-associated psychological distress screening tool, which predicts long-term disability. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish translation of the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire in patients with acute and subacute neck pain. Methods The test–retest reliability and internal consistency were assessed with the intraclass correlation coefficient and Cronbach's α. Construct validity was assessed with a visual analogue scale, the Neck Disability Index and the Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire. Results Cronbach's α value was found to be 0.790, test–retest reliability was 0.99. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.999 (95% confidence interval: 0.998–0.999; P=0.000). The Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire showed a moderate positive correlation with the Neck Disability Index (r=0.544; P=0.0001), a weak correlation with the Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire (r=0.264; P=0.0001) but no correlation with the visual analogue scale. Conclusions The Turkish version of the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire is a valid, reliable and acceptable screening tool in patients with acute and subacute neck pain.

Abstract BACKGROUND: The Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire (ÖMPQ) assesses the psychosocial factors in people with complaints of musculoskeletal disorders and predict those likely to develop persistent symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To culturally-adapt and assess the validity of the ÖMPQ in an Arabic population with low back pain (LBP).METHODS: The ÖMPQ was translated into Arabic. Eighty-four patients completed the questionnaires at baseline, 2 days later, and 3 months follow-up. The test-retest reliability, interclass correlation coefficient (ICC), specific agreement, predictive validity and content validity were assessed.RESULTS: For construct validity, the Arabic ÖMPQ (A-ÖMPQ) had a moderate (r ≥ 0.3, < 0.5) to high (r ≥ 0.5) correlation with pain, disability, fear-avoidance and catastrophizing questionnaires. The test-rest reliability showed was high ICC2,1=0.92 (95% CI: .83 - .96). The A-ÖMPQ score at baseline can significantly predict disability at 3 months F(1,82)=33.87, p<.01; R2=.29.CONCLUSIONS: The translation of the A-ÖMPQ into Arabic was successful. The A-ÖMPQ showed very good psychometric properties, and thus can be used to evaluate the psychosocial factors amongst patients with LBP.

BACKGROUND: Accurate clinical decision support tools may help clinicians select appropriate interventions for patients with spinal conditions. The Orebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire (OMPQ) is a screening questionnaire extensively studied as a predictive tool. The Work Assessment Triage Tool (WATT) is a clinical decision support tool developed to help select interventions for injured workers. OBJECTIVE: To compare the classification accuracy of the OMPQ and WATT to clinician recommendations for selecting interventions leading to a successful return to work in patients with spinal conditions. METHODS: A secondary analysis was undertaken of data from injured workers with spinal conditions assessed between 2013 and 2016. We considered it a success if the workers did not receive wage replacement benefits 30 days after assessment. Analysis included positive likelihood ratio (LR+) as an indicator of predictive accuracy. RESULTS: Within the database, 2,872 patients had complete data on the OMPQ, WATT, and clinician recommendations. At 30 days, the OMPQ was most accurate for identifying treatments that lead to successful outcomes with a LR+= 1.51 (95% Confidence Interval 1.26–1.82) compared to 1.05 (95% Confidence Interval 1.02–1.09) for clinicians, and 0.85 (95% Confidence Interval 0.79–0.91) for the WATT. CONCLUSIONS: All tool recommendations had poor accuracy, however the OMPQ demonstrated significantly better results.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are prevalent among waste collectors (WCs) in developing countries. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of MSDs and the factors associated with the risk of persistent musculoskeletal pain among WCs in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was utilized to study 468 WCs in 2017. The Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire and a questionnaire on demographic and work conditions were used to collect data. Descriptive and multivariate logistics regression analyzes were applied at a significance level of 0.05 to examine the factors related to the risk of persistent pain. FINDINGS: About 74.4% of the participants of this study experienced MSDs in at least one body region and 9.4% reported MSDs in all 10 body sites. The lower back was reported to be the most affected followed by the neck and shoulders. The risk of persistent musculoskeletal pain was significantly associated with age (odds ratio (OR) = 2.31, confidence interval (CI) = 1.05–5.09), gender (OR = 3.29, CI = 1.28–8.44), work hours (OR = 2.35, CI = 1.12–4.92), work shift (OR = 0.48, CI = 0.26–0.92), duration of poor postures of the neck (OR = 0.31, CI = 0.13–0.76), bent back (OR = 0.4 CI = 0.18–0.92) and for medial rotation (OR = 3.01, CI = 1.42–6.36), carrying heavy objects (OR = 2.94, CI = 1.15–7.48), and experience of work dissatisfaction (OR = 3.31, CI = 1.46-7.52), stress (OR = 7.14, CI = 3.14–16.24), or anxiety (OR = 6.37, CI = 3.07–13.21). CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of MSDs among WCs and its association with self-assessed unfavorable work postures and work-related stress implies the need of mechanical and social support at work for WC to prevent the development of MSDs and persistent pain.

Conclusions: High prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was observed among participated waste collectors and it associated with self-assessed unfavorable work postures and psychological stress at work. The findings imply the need of mechanical and social support at work for waste collectors to prevent the development of musculoskeletal disorders.

AbstractObjectiveTo identify and describe available instruments that can be used to screen patients with acute or subacute low back pain for a chronic low back pain trajectory.DesignIntegrative literature review.MethodsAn electronic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and PsychINFO databases took place from May through July of 2014 using systematic search strategies to identify screening instruments developed to identify people at risk of chronic low back pain. After screening for inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as quality indicators, the identified studies were categorized based on whether the instrument measured psychological, clinical, or functional measures to predict chronic low back pain.ResultsInitial searches identified 2,274 potential articles. After assessing for duplicates, title, and abstract content, there were 129 remaining articles. Articles were further excluded after analysis of the text, for a total of 42 studies reviewed. Most instruments reviewed were unable to provide evidence of predictive power for developing chronic low back pain.ConclusionsThis review identified numerous instruments developed to assess the likelihood of chronic low back pain in acute and subacute low back pain populations. Of the instruments reviewed, the STarT Back Screening Tool and the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire demonstrated superior predictive power compared with other instruments. Both screening tools offer evidence of validation, translation into different languages and international application, and usage in various health care settings and provide data on predictive power.
