Listeriosis is an emerging zoonotic disease. Listeria monocytogenes is an uncommon cause of illness in general population, however, in some high risk groups including neonates, pregnant women, elderly persons, immunosuppressed transplant recipients and others with impaired cell mediated immunity, it is important cause of life threatening bacteremia meningoencephalitis. Listeriosis is 18 times more common in pregnancy (12/100,000) than in the non-pregnant population (0.7/100,000) and 16-27% of all infections with Listeria occur in pregnant women. Isolation of bacteria by conventional methods of microscopy and culture on selective agar PALCUM agar after enrichment of samples by using UVM1, UVM2 .Speciation of listeria done by carbohydrate fermentation test followed by study of pathogenicity by hemolysis on sheep blood agar and CAMP test followed by antimicrobial susceptibility test done.Out of total 131 patients having history of Spontaneous abortion were screened for Listeria, in that 10(7.6%) were carrying Listeria out of which 3(2.29%) of them found to be positive for L. monocytogenes and 07(5.34%) were other Listeria spp. The prevalence of L. monocytogenes in present study was 03(2.29%) from spontaneous abortion cases.Based on the results of present study it is concluded that Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for spontaneous abortions in spontaneous abortion during pregnancy in humans.

Background and Objectives: Identification of GBS serotypes provides helpful information for appropriate the develop- ment of suitable vaccines; however, no reports from Vietnam have been published. This study has been performed to find the prevalence and serotypes of group B Streptococcus isolated from vagina of pregnant women in Nghe An province, Vietnam. Materials and Methods: Vaginal swabs were collected from pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation at the Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Vietnam between May 2018 and July 2019. The swabs were cultured on 5% sheep blood agar for isolation of GBS. All isolates were identified using the Gram staining, CAMP test and specific PCR. GBS strains were serotyped using the multiplex PCR assays. Results: The prevalence of vaginal GBS colonization was 9.20% of 750 participants. Among the isolates, serotypes III (39.13%) and V (31.89%) were the most frequent, followed by serotypes Ia (11.59%), VI (11.59%), Ib (2.90%), II (1.45%) and VII (1.45%), respectively. Serotypes IV, VIII and IX were not found. Conclusion: The prevalence of GBS in the Nghe An province of central Vietnam was similar to reports from other parts of the world. The predominat GBS serotypes (III, V, Ia and VI) were slightly different from those previously described from other regions around the world. The high frequency of serotype VI was a notable feature of the strains from pregnant women in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate Listeria monocytogenes in ham sliced in supermarkets in Recife city, Pernambuco state. In total, 40 samples of sliced ham were collected, and 25 g of ham was added to 225 mL of Demi Fraser broth. After incubation, 0.1 mL was inoculated in Fraser broth and, subsequently, sown in supplemented Listeria Selective Agar, based on Otaviani and Agosti. The following tests were carried out for confirmation purposes: Gram stain, motility test, catalase test and cAMP test. There was L. monocytogenes in 25% (10/40) of the samples. The presence of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat food, such as sliced ham, is likely related to lack of proper equipment-cleaning in supermarkets, a fact that poses great risk to public health.

Through a CAMP test, we first observed a Staphylococcus delphini strain (ATCC 49172) to release beta-haemolysin. Production of the latter in this coagulase-positive species of the 'Staphylococcus intermedius Group', in fact, has been labeled to be undetermined, thus far. Of course, a wider number of strains have to be investigated in order to define whether this property is constitutive (like in Staphylococcus (pseud)intermedius), or strain-dependent (like in Staphylococcus aureus), and which clinical impact it has; nevertheless, we can state that S. delphini ATCC 49172 indeed produces this toxin.

The aims of this study are the isolation and identification of possible bacteriological agents in respiratory infections of calves and the optimization of a diagnostic protocol to identify Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. Lesions of lungs from calves with pneumonia were examined. Cultural, morphological and conventional biochemical testing were done. The investigation was complemented by the double CAMP test. Five strains of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum in pure culture were found. The presence of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum in the lungs of calves with pneumonia was established and, consequently, more attention should be paid to this species in everyday laboratory work. The cultural similarity of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum to common bacteria like beta-hemolytic Streptococcus spp. and Arcanobacterium pyogenes is probably responsible for rare reports on the isolation of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum in veterinary microbiology. Our results indicate that Arcanobacterium haemolyticum could be or is the etiological agent of pneumonia. Therefore, we suggest the diagnostic protocol available for routine work in most microbiological laboratories.
