Cultural phenomenon of the rhizome concept

The article examines the manifestations of the rhizome concept proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in human narratives, using elements of the postmodern methodology with clarification of terminology tools. The research is carried out by the method of analysis and deconstruction of some cultural archetypes from the standpoint of relevance to the studied concept. The application of these methods to biblical archetypes, which have long influenced the way of thinking of mankind, will allow to analyze the ontological elements of individual ideological constructs, which are the base for the principles of liberal and conservative ideologies. The research is applied to the values called traditional but formed mainly in the XIX century, and their true relation to the deep cultural tradition of the Abrahamic religions. The analysis allows to identify the manipulation of elements of certain cultural and philosophical trends and assess their prospects, including the possible impact on global transformation processes in human culture.

Inventing the Amboyna Massacre

The English East India Company turned the Amboyna conspiracy into the Amboyna massacre in 1624. Massacre was a relatively new word in the English language. This chapter analyzes how the company drew on this new word, detached the incident from its Indian Ocean origins, and obscured the participation of non-Europeans in creating the massacre. At a time of renewed Anglo-Dutch alliance, the company could not use the word massacre in print, so it created this powerful message in other ways, especially in a pamphlet called the True Relation and through illustrations of tortured traders. By linking the executed English traders to martyrs, miracles, and acts of divine providence, the company crafted an enduring history of the Amboyna Massacre. The Habsburg Empire printed its own works in an effort to sever the alliance. This chapter charts the tension between the EIC and the English government as the government sought to secure the Dutch alliance and suppressed multiple works connected to Amboyna.

Domesticating Amboyna

Despite the resolution in the Treaty of Westminster (1654), the Amboyna massacre became entrenched in English culture as a familiar cultural touchstone. Three further wars with the Dutch led to new Amboyna pamphlets. Amboyna also became part of internal political disputes in which Tories wrote Amboyna pamphlets to attack Whig rivals. In a wide-ranging exploration of multiple genres of popular and print culture, including plays, advice manuals, fiction, and library catalogues, this chapter analyzes the many ways in which Amboyna became domesticated in English culture. By the end of the seventeenth century it had shed its political significance as a symbol of ingratitude and instead became a consummate tale of cruelty. It also endured as a tale of unrequited injury. British authors such as Dryden, Defoe, and Swift were part of this process. By the end of the eighteenth century, with a final True Relation, it had become a legend.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EMOTIONAL STATE OF STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT FACULTIES AT THE SAME UNIVERSITY

The publication represents the first fragment of the large comparative study, directed to the investigation of factors which negatively influenced to the state of health and emotional sphere of students from Chemical Faculty (CF, 102 persons) and economic (EF, 68 persons) faculties of the same university. For this goal, the genetical, psychological and sociological investigation was included into the study. The block of standard psychological scales, detecting levels of expression of social adoption, alarm, overfatigue and interpersonal relations as well as the subjective welfare scale, are used for anonymous psychological testing. For the analysis of the conduct of life, state of health and influence of socioeconomic factors the special card-interview is created. For the levels of genomic instability evaluation, the micronuclear test on the buccal epithelium cells is used. We found out that students from CF had 3 times more level of stress expression than students from EF. We detected the two significant factors, negatively influenced to emotional sphere: the student’s relation to their future profession and the duration of the contact with chemical compounds during laboratory studies. In the latter case, in addition to correlation with category “faculty”, the dependence on time of duration (hours/week) of laboratory work is revealed. The influence of material prosperity and indicators of a conduct of life on the state of health and the emotional sphere of students aren’t revealed. As the relation to the future profession is proved as an essential factor of students’ quality of life and health, it is represented to be correct to reveal the true relation to the future profession during admission examinations by means of special psychological tests. Such approach can not only become base of a new technology of health protection during the training in higher schools, but also to increase the number of students who after release will work on the chosen specialty will allow increase.

This chapter examines the period between the mid-1680s and 1740, long considered to be the time ‘the rise of the novel’ occurred. Scholars have difficulty separating fiction from factual narrative during this era, as the authors and readers of the time thought of fiction not as the ‘novel’ but rather as a congeries of disparate and overlapping types: ‘history’, ‘letters’, ‘tale’, ‘romance’, ‘secret history’, ‘memoirs’, ‘true relation’, and the like. Only in the 1740s could one find a publishing environment more familiar to modern observers. Moreover, a recurrent theme of this era is price, to which book historians are usually sensitive, but which literary critics have not tended to consider important. Price is a crucial factor in relation to the length of the book, the author's remuneration, the publisher's profit, and the audience that can be reached.
