Post-operative adhesions affect patients undergoing all types of surgeries. They are associated with serious complications, including higher risk of morbidity and mortality. Given increased hospitalization, longer operative times, and longer length of hospital stay, post-surgical adhesions also pose a great financial burden. Although our knowledge of some of the underlying mechanisms driving adhesion formation has significantly improved over the past two decades, literature has yet to fully explain the pathogenesis and etiology of post-surgical adhesions. As a result, finding an ideal preventative strategy and leveraging appropriate tissue engineering strategies has proven to be difficult. Different products have been developed and enjoyed various levels of success along the translational tissue engineering research spectrum, but their clinical translation has been limited. Herein, we comprehensively review the agents and products that have been developed to mitigate post-operative adhesion formation. We also assess emerging strategies that aid in facilitating precision and personalized medicine to improve outcomes for patients and our healthcare system.

In recent years, tissue engineering research has led to the development of this field by designing scaffolds with better properties that can fulfill its purpose of better and faster tissue regeneration, consequently improving people’s quality of life. Scaffolds are matrices, predominantly composed of polymeric materials, whose main function is to offer support for cell adhesion and subsequent growth, leading to the regeneration of the damaged tissue. The widely used biopolymer in tissue engineering is collagen, which is the most abundant protein in animals. Its use is due to its structure, biocompatibility, ease of modification, and processability. In this work, collagen-based scaffolds were developed with different concentrations and processing techniques, by obtaining hydrogels and aerogels that were characterized with an emphasis on their morphology and mechanical properties. Moreover, fructose was added in some cases as a chemical crosslinking agent to study its influence on the scaffolds’ properties. The obtained results revealed that the scaffolds with higher collagen concentrations were more rigid and deformable. Comparing both systems, the aerogels were more rigid, although the hydrogels were more deformable and had higher pore size homogeneity. Fructose addition produced a slight increase in the critical strain, together with an increase in the elastic modulus.

Tissue regeneration is probably the most ambitious aim for the tissue engineering research field. Even more difficult it becomes when we attempt to regenerate a complex organ that we do not fully understand, such as the brain. That is why in recent years we have observed an increased number of approaches that strive to create functional brain or networks in vitro in order to study their properties and develop platforms that can be used for biomedical applications. In this review, we will describe how, among all, carbon-based materials took over all the other materials as the most interesting and promising not only in the electronic industry but also to create 3D functional models of the brain in vitro.

Urethral stricturing is a narrowing of the urethral lumen as a result of ischaemic spongiofibrosis. The main challenge of currently available treatment options is recurrence of the stricture. Recent advancements in the treatment of urethral strictures mainly came from the fields of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Research efforts have primarily focused on decreasing the recurrence of stricture after internal urethrotomy and constructing tissue-engineered urethral substitutes to improve clinical outcomes of urethroplasty surgeries. The aim of this article is to review the most recent advancements in the management of urethral stricture disease in men.

In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) micromanipulator mounted on a glass capillary is developed for handling biological samples, such as multicellular spheroids and embryos. To fabricate the micromanipulator, we developed an additive manufacturing system based on high-resolution microstereolithography using a 405-nm blue laser. The fabrication system makes it possible to fabricate 3D microstructures on a glass capillary with 2.5 µm lateral resolution and 25 µm layer thickness. We also demonstrated the capture and release of a spheroid with the micromanipulator fabricated using our additive manufacturing system. We showed that spheroids can be easily handled by a simple operation with minimal damage using a cage-like multiple finger structure. Additive manufacturing of tailor-made micromanipulators mounted on a glass capillary will be useful in biological and tissue engineering research.
