Abstract In this work, we report an all-fiber Nd-doped passively mode-locked fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation mechanism operating in the 1.06 μm region. When the pump power was 300 mW, a pulse with a maximum average output power of 0.63 mW, a narrowest pulse duration of 1.22 ps and a pulse repetition rate of 14.25 MHz was obtained.

Abstract We have numerically and experimentally observed the soliton pulsation with obvious breathing behavior in the anomalous fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation technique. The numerical study of the soliton pulsation with breathing behavior was analyzed through the split-step Fourier method at first, and it was found that the phase difference caused by the polarization controller would affect the breathing characteristics. Then, taking advantage of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, we confirmed the breathing characteristic of soliton pulsation in the same fiber laser as the simulation model experimentally. These results complement the research on the breathing characteristic of soliton pulsation.

Abstract: Setup for self-starting passive Q-switch operation of IR fibre laser via nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) was demonstrated for the first time for linear cavity. A Q-switched pulse duration of ~ 600 ns, a maximum peak power of ~16 W and an average power of 408 mW have been obtained at 223 kHz repetition rate for 5.1 W pump power from 1319 nm CW Nd: YAG laser launched to ~ 2.78 m unidirectional single-clad Tm-doped silica fibre linear cavity using only flat polarizer and feedback mirror to induce NPR. The dependence of the fibre laser output characteristics on the polarization angle of the polarizer is also reported. However, self induced passive Q-switching in linear fibre laser cavities is only observed in fibres with angled cleaved ends and with lengths that are around the optimum length for CW operation. We experimentally investigate the formation of various pulses from a thulium–holmium (Tm–Ho)-codoped nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mode-locking fiber oscillator. The ultrafast fiber oscillator can simultaneously operate in the noise-like and soliton mode-locking regimes with two different emission wavelengths located around 1947 and 2010 nm, which are believed to be induced from the laser transition of Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions respectively. When the noise-like pulse (NLP) and soliton pulse (SP) co-exist inside the laser oscillator, a maximum output power of 295 mW is achieved with a pulse repetition rate of 19.85-MHz, corresponding to a total single pulse energy of 14.86 nJ. By adjusting the wave plates, the fiber oscillator could also deliver the dual-NLPs or dual-SPs at dual wavelengths, or single NLP and single SP at one wavelength. The highest 61-order harmonic soliton pulse and 33.4-nJ-NLP are also realized respectively with proper design of the fiber cavity.
