This paper reviews the material properties, fabrication and functionalities of liquid metal-based devices. In modern wireless communication technology, adaptability and versatility have become attractive features of any communication device. Compared with traditional conductors such as copper, the flow characteristics and lack of elastic limit of conductive fluids make them ideal alternatives for applications such as flexible circuits, soft electronic devices, wearable stretch sensors, and reconfigurable antennas. These fluid properties also allow for innovative manufacturing techniques such as 3-D printing, injecting or spraying conductive fluids on rigid/flexible substrates. Compared with traditional high-frequency switching methods, liquid metal (LM) can easily use micropumps or an electrochemically controlled capillary method to achieve reconfigurability of the device. The movement of LM over a large physical dimension enhances the reconfigurable state of the antenna, without depending on nonlinear materials or mechanisms. When LM is applied to wearable devices and sensors such as electronic skins (e-skins) and strain sensors, it consistently exhibits mechanical fatigue resistance and can maintain good electrical stability under a certain degree of stretching. When LM is used in microwave devices and paired with elastic linings such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the shape and size of the devices can be changed according to actual needs to meet the requirements of flexibility and a multistate frequency band. In this work, we discuss the material properties, fabrication and functionalities of LM.

Abstract In this paper, an all-optical XOR-AND gate operation has been proposed using one-dimensional periodic nonlinear material model. This structure consists of alternating layers of different nonlinear materials. In this design, we can obtain XOR and AND logical operation simultaneously at the reflected and transmitted port of the periodic structure. Numerical simulation has also been done using the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method. The response time of this switching operation is picoseconds (ps) range order. We find low insertion loss (−3.01 dB), high contrast ratio (14.13 dB) and high extension ratio (10.93 dB) of this device. This design will be useful in future all-optical computing.

AbstractUltrafast nonlinear photonics enables a host of applications in advanced on-chip spectroscopy and information processing. These rely on a strong intensity dependent (nonlinear) refractive index capable of modulating optical pulses on sub-picosecond timescales and on length scales suitable for integrated photonics. Currently there is no platform that can provide this for the UV spectral range where broadband spectra generated by nonlinear modulation can pave the way to new on-chip ultrafast (bio-) chemical spectroscopy devices. We demonstrate the giant nonlinearity of UV hybrid light-matter states (exciton-polaritons) up to room temperature in an AlInGaN waveguide. We experimentally measure ultrafast nonlinear spectral broadening of UV pulses in a compact 100 μm long device and deduce a nonlinearity 1000 times that in common UV nonlinear materials and comparable to non-UV polariton devices. Our demonstration promises to underpin a new generation of integrated UV nonlinear light sources for advanced spectroscopy and measurement.

In the paper, a modified nonlinear finite element method for analysis of trapezoidal plates geometrically reduced to shallow-shell Reissner-Mindlin formulation is presented. Due to the method proposed the complex plate cross-section and nonlinear materials may be modelled and no implementation of advanced constitutive law via user subroutines is needed. The generalized nonlinear constitutive law is used to update the stiffness of the plate element. The method enables modeling of complicated cross-sections, such as steel trapezoidal sheets, metal facing sandwich panels or reinforced concrete. Additionally, for those geometrically complex sections an advanced nonlinear material may be adopted. To verify the proposed method, a selected trapezoidal sheets were modeled in a commercial software as full 3D shell structures. By comparing displacements and forces, it was shown that both models behave almost identically, however, the simplified model has about 300-400 times less degrees of freedom, thus it is much more efficient.
