On the Social Web, social influencers have outsized effects on their peer followers and can influence worldviews, political decisions, aspirations, lifestyles, and buying-and-selling behaviors for varying periods of time. Social influencers attain their influence based on various factors (or combinations): the sharing of insider knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) or information; entertainment; charisma, personality, appearance, communications; engaging storytelling; social identity building for the followers; and parasocial relationship building. This work explores how social influencers self-present to attract and maintain a mass-scale remote audience in a competitive virtual popularity game. This explores “peer lessons” about social influence by masters, based on observed strategic and tactical communications from social video, in a particular target domain, namely survival in the more remote reaches of Alaska.

Abstract Objectives Traditional knowledge dissemination methods have been ineffective in leading to timely and widespread changes in clinical practice. Social media has the potential to reach broader audiences than more traditional methods to disseminate research findings. We evaluated the effectiveness of using social media to mobilize knowledge about pain in dementia. Methods We developed an online repository of evidence-based content (e.g., guidelines, assessment approaches) and a video about pain in dementia. The video was uploaded on YouTube, a video sharing platform. We collaborated with stakeholder organizations on a 5-month social media campaign (#SeePainMoreClearly) on Twitter, a social networking site, to disseminate digital content about pain in dementia. The response to our initiatives was evaluated using web/social media metrics, a video questionnaire, and by comparing the extent of Twitter discussions about pain in dementia before and during the campaign period. Results Web metrics showed a great reach of the initiative: the #SeePainMoreClearly hashtag received over 5,000,000 impressions and was used in 31 countries. The online repository was viewed by 1,218 individuals from 55 countries and the video resulted in 51,000 views. Comparisons between the pre-campaign and campaign periods demonstrated a higher number of posts about pain in dementia during the campaign period. Conclusion Findings have implications for closing the knowledge-to-practice gap in dementia care through faster mobilization of scientific findings. Our campaign compares favorably to other health information dissemination initiatives. The methodologies used in the study could serve as a framework for the development of social media initiatives in other health disciplines.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the information-seeking behavior of Egyptian parents of autistic children.Design/methodology/approachThe study sample consists of 61 parents across Egypt, divided into six focus groups, as equal as possible, to represent Northern, Middle and Southern Egypt.FindingsDmographically, of the 61 parents, 32 (52.5%) were fathers, and 29 (47.5%) were mothers. A large number of parents' ages ranged from 31 to 45 years old. The highest percentage of them was holding a BA, followed by a high school/diploma, and the highest percentage was found to be married. The parents of autistic children followed many methods and channels to obtain supportive information related to their children's disease. They used many types of information, which varied between formal and informal sources. While just over a quarter of Egyptian parents prefer to use formal sources (books, newspapers, magazines, health publications, pamphlets, as well as specialized libraries), more than three-quarters of them used informal sources, such as mobile/smartphones, the Web, social media and social networking sites. The information related to the search for institutions supporting autistic people came in the first place, then that information related to searching for specialized centers in treating autistic children, then information related to rehabilitation, integration and psychological support centers for these children and then information related to the search for financial aid provided by charitable or even government agencies. Some parents were found to have limited awareness of their children's treatment mechanism, as some of them do not consider the need to treat their children in a systematic, continuous, and systematic manner. Similarly, the lack of basic services and shortage of government centers specializing in the treatment of these children. Parents also emphasized the lack of government support, as well as the lack of curative research centers. Some also pointed out that there was a shortage of workshops for the rehabilitation of their children and themselves as well.Originality/valueThis research is considered to be the first research of its kind at the local and Arab levels, which is also one of the few studies at the regional level that is interested in this community of information seekers. The findings of this research can raise awareness about the information behavior of Egyptian parents of autistic children among those who are interested in the role of the information and its use by specific groups of the information society, as well as decision makers.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/OIR-11-2020-0494

In the near future, COVID-19 vaccine efficacy trials in larger cohorts may offer the possibility to implement child and adolescent vaccination. The opening of the vaccination for these strata may play a key role in order to limit virus circulation, infection spreading towards the most vulnerable subjects, and plan safe school reopening. Vaccine hesitancy (VH) could limit the ability to reach the coverage threshold required to ensure herd immunity. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and determinants of VH among parents/guardians toward a potentially available COVID-19 vaccination for children and adolescents. An online survey was performed in parents/guardians of children aged <18 years old, living in Bologna. Overall, 5054 questionnaires were collected. A vast majority (60.4%) of the parents/guardians were inclined to vaccinate, while 29.6% were still considering the opportunity, and 9.9% were hesitant. Highest vaccine hesitancy rates were detected in female parents/guardians of children aged 6–10 years, ≤29 years old, with low educational level, relying on information found in the web/social media, and disliking mandatory vaccination policies. Although preliminary, these data could help in designing target strategies to implement adherence to a vaccination campaign, with special regard to web-based information.

In this text, we reflect about the relationship between the Portuguese National Film Plan and the Social Networks, in the context of the current (network) society, presenting, for this purpose, the ongoing research project “Education, Film, Social Networks: a study about the Portuguese National Film Plan.” The theoretical framework of the study includes the concepts of open education and audiovisuals, envisaged under the theoretical triad Education / Film / Social Networks, with the aim of understanding how this Plan makes use of online digital social networks, the paradigmatic example of the tools associated to the social web. Moreover, the relationship between film, education and social networks is considered in particular, taking into account the digital lifestyles of contemporary society and the importance of developing and disseminating different literacies. Such reflections will also take into account the practice of the National Film Plan, an initiative of the Portuguese government created to promote the development of film literacy in the school environment. Finally, it will be possible to conclude that the connection between film and education goes back to the origins of film itself, having evolved not only with filmic technologies and pedagogical methodologies, but also with the influence of the new lifestyles in society. Thus, in today’s digital, online and audiovisual society, and since the relationship between cinema and education is dynamic too, it now finds both other challenges and new opportunities.
