A gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) based on an unstructured grid is applied to simulate the evolution of the fluid motions in exponential variable cross-section resonators. The effects of the acoustic field intensity on the oscillatory pressure, velocity, temperature, and flow streaming structure were investigated numerically, and the model was validated. The results demonstrate that the geometry and driving strength are the main factors affecting the final performance of the system. For the quasi-linear and moderate non-linear cases in optimum exponential tube, the periodic generation, evolution, and shedding of vortices in flow fields are associated with the storage and release of energy, which is the transmission mode of the third type of direct current (DC) flow, and its driving mechanism is attributed to the asymmetrical pressure and temperature. Meanwhile, some new physical characteristics were also discovered for the highly non-linear case, e.g., the disorder and unsteadiness of the flow direction accomplished with turbulent flow streaming structures. The secondary flow is manifested as multiscale, irregular and unsteady vortices throughout the tube. The smallest increment of pressure and velocity amplitude occurs concurrently with the biggest increment of temperature amplitude. These evidences suggest that there is an optimal driving strength, even for a good configuration tube, with which the maximum efficiency can be obtained.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of nanofluid over rotating disk with the exponential variable thickness Z=ce−bRR0 (c > 0, b > 0) and to analyze Brownian motion and thermophoresis of Buongiorno model on the disk embedded in nanofluid-saturated porous media. Design/methodology/approach Using the generalized von Karman transformation, the boundary layer governing equations are transformed into semi-similar forms solved by bvp4c in MATLAB. Findings The effects of the thickness parameter a, the shape parameter b, the Brownian motion parameter Nb and thermophoresis parameter Nt on flow, heat and mass transfer are analyzed. With the increase of thickness parameter a, the radial velocity first decreases and then increases, showing the opposite trend on the two sides of the peak value. Moreover, temperature and concentration rise as the Brownian motion parameter Nb becomes larger. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that has been done on rotating disk with exponential variable thickness in nanofluid. The impact of the two slip effects, namely, Brownian motion and thermophoresis, on the nanofluid boundary layer flow, heat and mass transfer because of rotating disk with exponential variable thickness Z=ce−bRR0 (c > 0, b > 0) has been addressed in this study.

Soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs) are important in terms of groundwater recharge, agriculture, and soil chemistry. These relationships are also of considerable value in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. Their measurement, however, is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming. Many empirical models have been developed to describe the SWCC. Statistical assessment of soil-water characteristic curve models found that exponential-based model equations were the most difficult to fit and generally provided the poorest fit to the soil-water characteristic data. In this paper, an exponential-based model is devised to describe the SWCC. The modified equation is similar to those previously reported by Gardner (1956) but includes exponential variable. Verification was performed with 24 independent data sets for a wide range of soil textures. Prediction results were compared with the most widely used models to assess the model’s performance. It was proven that the exponential-based equation of the modified model provided greater flexibility and a better fit to data on various types of soil.
