Objectives Peer support programs are effective in improving outcomes among low-resource populations. Prior studies suggest that shared experiences improve peer partnerships. We hypothesized that participants in a peer coaching program who then became coaches might bring insight into their coaching role. We explored the motivations of coaches in a diabetes self-management coaching program who became coaches after completing the program as participants. Methods Between June 2016 and April 2017 we conducted semi-structured interviews with eight participants-turned-coaches and four of their peer partners in a six-month peer coaching program for patients with poor glycemic control at the Detroit VA. The interviews were transcribed, reviewed and coded by two researchers in an iterative process until consensus was reached. Key themes were identified and analyzed. Results Participants-turned-coaches reported the importance of their own peer coach in their decision to become a coach. Participants-turned-coaches described commitment to their partners, providing realistic encouragement, and fostering a reciprocal partnership. Participants-turned-coaches shared their own difficulties to motivate their partners and create a sense of commonality. Discussion Encouraging participants who complete diabetes peer coach interventions to become coaches appears to be a useful strategy for developing peer coaches who bring sensitivity, commitment, and reciprocity to their role.

This qualitative study explores one urban district's purpose, design, and implementation of a unique classroom management coaching program for first-year teachers (FYTs). Through interviews of coaches, assistant principals, and district administrators, we identify why and how this program supported FYTs’ struggles with classroom management. Results highlight difficulties related to culturally responsive classroom management, which was mitigated by district coaches who provided individualized support. Data also indicates specific misconceptions held by FYTs, strategic district decisions in designing the coaching program, and challenges encountered throughout implementation. Findings have implications for the preparation and support of culturally responsive classroom management for FYTs.

AbstractIn this article, we present a theoretically well-founded coaching concept, which can be assigned to the cognitive-behavioral area and which aims to optimally deal with stress. The coaching concept is based on Lazarus’ transactional theory of stress and coping. The three coaching sessions based on this theory are described in as much detail as possible. We explain which exercises can be used and how – both during and between the coaching sessions – in order to provide the best possible support for stress management and goal attainment. The specific procedure is illustrated with the case study “Mr. Smith” and reflected from the coach’s perspective. The description of the cognitive-behavioral stress management coaching (abbreviated to CBSM coaching) and the case study therefore offer both suggestions for experienced coaches and a good guide for newcomers to the field. The effectiveness of the CBSM coaching has already been empirically proven. The results of this already published evaluation study will be presented in the overview. With the theory-based development and the practical presentation of the CBSM coaching concept, a contribution should be made to further close the gap that sometimes arises between coaching research and practice.

BACKGROUND: More than one quarter of all cardiovascular surgical patients are re-admitted to hospitals with postoperative complications experienced during the first three months of recovery. AIM AND METHOD: The purpose of this discursive paper is to review the literature pertaining to a self-management coaching intervention that is currently being evaluated using a randomized controlled clinical trial. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: A discussion of how to integrate coaching into clinical practice is presented. The use of coaching in the clinical setting has implications for nurses in that it can be used to assess behaviours, knowledge, and learning needs; provide individualized education that is reflective of a patient's identified learning needs; collaborate with patients in setting goals; identify barriers and engage in problem-solving to overcome barriers; and create a specific plan for follow-up.

This study was to determine the effectiveness of clinical supervision to improve the class management abilities of elementary school teachers. The research method uses action research based on clinical supervision in three cycles. Implementation of clinical supervision was attended by 24 representative teachers from 10 elementary schools in the Education Office of North Batukliang District, Central Lombok. Data collection was carried out through classroom observations and class management coaching tests and was described based on the results of the teacher's mastery achievement analysis. The results showed that the percentage of completeness in each cycle was obtained 37.5% in cycle-I, 62.5% in cycle-II, and 100% for cycle-III. It can be concluded that the implementation of clinical supervision is effective to improve the ability of elementary school teachers in conducting classroom management.
