Machine perfusion techniques are becoming standard care in the clinical donation and transplantation setting. However, more research is needed to understand the mechanisms of the protective effects of machine perfusion. For preservation related experiments, porcine kidneys are acceptable alternatives to human kidneys, because of their size and similar physiology. In this experiment, the use of slaughterhouse kidneys was evaluated with normothermic kidney perfusion (NKP), thereby avoiding the use of laboratory animals. Porcine kidneys were derived from two local abattoirs. To induce different degrees of injury, different warm ischemic times and preservation techniques were used. After preservation, kidneys were reperfused for 4 h with two different NKP solutions to test renal function and damage. The effect of the preservation technique or a short warm ischemic time was clearly seen in functional markers, such as creatinine clearance and fractional sodium excretion levels, as well as in the generic damage marker lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Porcine slaughterhouse kidneys are a useful alternative to laboratory animals for transplantation- and preservation-related research questions. To maintain kidney function during NKP, a short warm ischemic time or hypothermic machine perfusion during the preservation phase are mandatory.

Seafood is very perishable and can quickly spoil due to three mechanisms: autolysis, microbial degradation, and oxidation. Primary commercial sectors within the North Atlantic fisheries include demersal, pelagic, and shellfish fisheries. The preservation techniques employed across each sector can be relatively consistent; however, some key differences exist across species and regions to maintain product freshness. Freezing has long been employed as a preservation technique to maintain product quality for extended periods. Freezing allows seafood to be held until demand improves and shipped long distances using lower-cost ground transportation while maintaining organoleptic properties and product quality. Thawing is the opposite of freezing and can be applied before additional processing or the final sale point. However, all preservation techniques have limitations, and a properly frozen and thawed fish will still suffer from drip loss. This review summarizes the general introduction of spoilage and seafood spoilage mechanisms and the latest preservation techniques in the seafood industry, focusing on freezing and thawing processes and technologies. This review also considers the concept of global value chains (GVC) and the points to freeze and thaw seafood along the GVC to improve its quality with the intention of helping Newfoundland and Labrador’s emerging Northern cod (Gadus morhua) fisheries enhance product quality, meet market demands and increase stakeholder value.

With the demand for tooth/gum aesthetics in implant-supported rehabilitations, the surgeon, whether an implant specialist or not, increasingly needs to be mindful of proper care for socket preservation following extraction. The paper presented here reports the case of a male patient who manifested dental impairment of the Upper Left First Molar (tooth #26) [in FDI notation]; following tomographic analysis and after reaching a consensus with the patient, the decision was made to extract said tooth and preserve the socket for subsequent implant placement. The aim of the case report is to present a clinical case of alveolar ridge preservation through the “Double Layer Socket Preservation” technique, a technique created by Barry Barthee, whereby a xenogenous graft under an xenogenous type III collagen membrane was combined with a polypropylene barrier. Following research and study results on the subject, it was concluded that by applying this technique, the alveolar ridge is greatly preserved and bone volume is maintained, both of which are very important factors for good health of the tissues surrounding the implant and consequent increase in the survival of the implant itself.

The valuable information is extracted through data mining techniques. Recently, privacy preserving data mining techniques are widely adopted for securing and protecting the information and data. These techniques convert the original dataset into protected dataset through swapping, modification, and deletion functions. This technique works in two steps. In the first step, cloud computing considers a service platform to determine the optimum horizontal partitioning in given data. In this work, K-Means++ algorithm is implemented to determine the horizontal partitioning on the cloud platform without disclosing the cluster centers information. The second steps contain data protection and recover phases. In the second step, noise is incorporated in the database to maintain the privacy and semantic of the data. Moreover, the seed function is used for protecting the original databases. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is evaluated using several benchmark medical datasets. The results are evaluated using encryption time, execution time, accuracy, and f-measure parameters.

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain types of fungi that contaminate food and feed, posing serious health risks to human and livestock. This study evaluated the combination of blue light with curcumin to inactivate Aspergillus flavus spores, its effect on aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) production and maintaining carotenoid content in three maize varieties. The study was first conducted in vitro, and the spore suspensions (104 CFU·mL−1) were treated with four curcumin concentrations (25 and 50 µM in ethanol, 1000 and 1250 µM in propylene glycol) and illuminated at different light doses from 0 to 130.3 J·cm−2. The photoinactivation efficiency was light-dose dependent with the highest photoinactivation of 2.3 log CFU·mL−1 achieved using 1000 µM curcumin at 104.2 J·cm−2. Scanning electron microscopy revealed cell wall deformations as well as less density in photosensitized cells. Photosensitization of maize kernels gave rise to a complete reduction in the viability of A. flavus and therefore inhibition of AFB1 production, while no significant (p > 0.05) effect was observed using either light or curcumin. Moreover, photosensitization did not affect the carotenoids in all the studied maize varieties. The results suggest that photosensitization is a green alternative preservation technique to decontaminate maize kernels and reduce consumer exposure to AFB1 without any effect on carotenoid content.

Decomposition is a natural process that begins approximately four minutes after death and continues until the body is degraded to simpler biochemical components which are gradually recycled back to the environment. This process is dependent on extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Embalming is a chemical preservation technique that aims to preserve the external appearance of the body in good condition for an indeterminate period. In Spain, there is a lack of experimental studies carried out to analyse the variables that affect decomposition in embalmed bodies, therefore, in accordance with the conclusions reached by previous authors, it is hypothesised that embalmed bodies show quantifiable characteristics during the late stage decomposition which distinguish them from control, unembalmed, cadavers. An anthropological and statistical analysis was performed on 14 individuals from Cementerio Sur de Madrid exhumed after ten years according to the Mortuary Health Law of the Autonomous Region of Madrid. The preliminary results obtained showed that there is a qualitative and statistically significant relationship between the variables evaluated, being the presence or absence of soft tissue the most notable difference. The mortuary or thanatopraxy treatments performed before the burial and the microenvironmental conditions of the burial positively influence the soft tissue preservation on embalmed bodies. These results contribute to the understanding about the decomposition rate of an embalmed cadavers in cemeteries, and the related extrinsic variables.
