We present preliminary results of a structural analysis and 3D modelling project carried out along a transect in the Santerno Valley, between Firenzuola (Tuscany) and the outskirts of Imola. The aim of the project is to combine surface geological and structural data (available thanks to the national geological mapping CARG project and original surveys), with the available subsurface data (2D seismics and a few wells), and obtain a comprehensive 3D framework for deformation in this key area of the Northern Apennines. In addition, by combining geodetic, seismicity and interferometric data with the 3D structural model, we are able to obtain a better picture of the active structures in the area.

Our analysis shows that the studied transect is at the northern periclinal hinge of a regional anticline/window where the Marnoso-Arenacea Formation crops out and is crosscut by several regional-scale thrusts. Subsurface data suggest that these relatively shallow thrusts are rooted at the top of Mesozoic carbonates, that do not crop out in the area. Different balancing algorithms confirm a relevant along-strike variation of slip along these thrusts, that reduce their offset towards the periclinal hinge to the west.

In the more external part of the transect, towards the lower hills and the plain around Imola, a regional-scale pop-up, evidenced by the late-Messinian unconformity, is the main feature in subsurface datasets. This structure is rooted at the base of Mesozoic carbonates and is characterized by large and continuous ramps that can be considered candidates for recent earthquakes in the area.

The ‘problem – Solution’ model of discourse structure, developed by Winter (1969, 1976, 1977) and extended by Hoey (1979, 1982, 1983) is one of the few models which combine surface linguistic study and local levels of text analysis with the overall structure of text. This model has been used in the analysis of non-narrative texts. It is hypothesized that: The problem -Solution pattern is used in narrative texts. The lexical items can signal the rhetorical pattern in the text. The study aims at investigating the validity of the above hypotheses by using Hoey’s model of analysis on Hemingway’s Cat in the Rain. The analysis of the short story proved the validity of the proposed hypotheses and revealed the following: The writer followed a conventional order in presenting the information i.e. situation, problem, solution and evaluation. He communicated the rhetorical pattern to the reader through his clever use of the lexical items. The solution is always preceded by a pre-solution. The positive solution signals the end of the discourse and the negative solution signals another problem which confirms the reader’s expectations

Multiples are traditionally treated as undesired noise, but they are also real reflections from the subsurface as primaries. Smaller reflection angles and longer travel paths usually make them provide more structural information and more balanced illumination than primaries. Instead of multiple elimination in conventional seismic data processing, the migration of multiples has drawn great attention in recent years. The most commonly used method is performed by replacing the source wavelet with the observed data and using separated multiples as the receiver wavefield to apply traditional migration algorithms. However, crosstalk artifacts caused by crosscorrelation of unrelated events severely degrade the image quality of multiples. We have analyzed the cause of artifacts followed by a novel proposal of migrating the multiples by separating surface-related multiples into different orders. First, we combine surface-related multiple elimination and the focal transform to do the separation of multiples in order. Then, crosstalk can be well-eliminated by migrating different-order multiples separately and stacking the separated images together. Taking advantage of reverse time migration, imaging of multiples can be greatly improved. Theoretical analysis shows that crosstalk artifacts can be well-eliminated by our method. Numerical and field data examples determined that our method can provide a greater amount of correct information for subsurface structures.

We introduce a new type of subdivision-based multiresolution representation for triangle meshes, kite trees, which has the flexibility to represent arbitrary triangle meshes losslessly. We also develop an algorithm for extracting a balanced kite tree representation of an arbitrary input mesh that preserves mesh topology and regularities in the subdivision structure. Our scheme allows us to combine surface information automatically extracted from input data with algorithmically-generated information in a single multiresolution representation and to represent the results of adaptive refinement of regular subdivision surfaces.

In 2 field experiments, varying lime rates were applied to acidic soils and incorporated to 10 or 20 cm depth by rotary hoeing. In Expt 2, soil was also limed in 10-cm layers to 40 cm depth, and the profile was reconstructed. The aim was to remove acidity as a constraint to plant growth. In both experiments, 3 cereal cultivars (1 barley and 2 wheat) of varying aluminium (Al) tolerance were sown. Grain yield was monitored in 4 seasons (Expt 1) or 5 seasons (Expt 2). Incorporation of lime to 20 cm rather than to 10 cm improved yields of the cereals in 2 of 4 seasons in Expt 1, and improved yields markedly in a drier season in Expt 2. In Expt 2, cereal yield was demonstrated to be a function of soil pHCa in both the 0-10 and 10-20 cm layers. There was no advantage of amendment to 40 cm depth compared with 20 cm depth at this site. At both sites, the 10-20 cm soil (corresponding to the upper A2 layer) was very acidic, and the incorporation of lime to 20 cm removed this barrier. The effect of amendment or pHCa increase in the 10-20 cm layer is clearest and most consistent for barley, the most Al-sensitive species, and least consistent for the tolerant wheat cultivars. It is probably not realistic in commercial agriculture to incorporate lime to 20 cm depth. The alternative strategies are to wait for the effects of amendment of the 0-10 cm layer to move down the soil profile, or to amend part of the soil below 10 cm depth by lime injection. Until the subsurface soil is amended, the best strategy is to combine surface liming (0-10 cm) with the use of Al-tolerant cultivars.
